[UPDATE Cancelled] Prescribed Burn in SoHum Today

Goatgrass burn in late May in the Bay Area.

Prescribed burn of goat grass in the Bay Area.

Press release from the Humboldt Co. Prescribed Burn Association:

The Humboldt Co. Prescribed Burn Association have resources preparing and the window of opportunity has arrived for a 10 acre burn planned for this Friday, June 28th in SE Humboldt County. Some fire engines and participants in their vehicles will impact traffic along Alderpoint and Dyersville Loop road in the early morning and after the completion of the burn, which could be by midday to early afternoon. Some smoke will be visible but it should not adversely affect local communities in the area.

When: Early Morning on Friday 6/28/2024

Where: Fort Seward/Dyerville Loop/Alderpoint area

Size: around 10 acres of grassland

Why: The PBA is working with a local landowner and NRCS to reduce the spread of barbed goatgrass along the roadside. Barbed goatgrass is a unpalatable invasive annual grass that spreads rapidly and can cause injury to livestock and wildlife. It’s recent discovery in new parts of Humboldt County have range managers concerned. The intention of burning in this season in to target the seed heads of goatgrass when they are most vulnerable fire, preventing the invasive from setting next years seed.

So far we have volunteers from Briceland VFD and Shelter Cove Fire; participants from other VFDs in the area is possible.

UPDATE 7:55 a.m.: The Humboldt Co. Prescribed Burn Association updated us saying, “Rx Burn has been Canceled; due to staffing concerns in HUU.” This means that because of fires elsewhere, a number of Humboldt/Del Norte County firefighters have been working outside of the county. Because Cal Fire is concerned about this lack of staffing, they’ve withdrawn the Humboldt Co. Prescribed Burn Association’s permit.

participants from other VFDs in the area is possible.”

Participants from all kinds of fire department is possible. We are having very unpredictable winds and the fire danger is spooky high. I understand the need to irradicate the invasive grass, but… I hope they have a good back-up plan.

Great…

I’ve been worried sick and stressed out big time about fire since last Thursday’s fire, and now they are going to put more fire on the ground, (on purpose), in my neighborhood…

The grass, IS WET, foggy, and dewy, this morning, so let’s hope that they get going pretty quick, and get it done and over with, ASAP…

I kind of wish that it was my place that they were doing the control burn on this morning…

Then I could stop worrying so much, after it was done and out…

No way I would want to be responsible in any way for any mishaps or escapes though…

That would be a nail biter…

Best wishes for safety and success to all involved.

I wish you were in charge Ernie…

I’m not so worried about this one for some reason, maybe because it is kind of wet and to he wind isn’t blowing, but if you were calling the shots…

I’d feel even better about it…

You must be joking
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roundup_(herbicide)#False_advertising

In 1996, Monsanto was accused of false and misleading advertising of glyphosate products, prompting a lawsuit by the New York State attorney general.[60] Monsanto had made claims that its spray-on glyphosate based herbicides, including Roundup, were safer than table salt and “practically non-toxic” to mammals, birds, and fish, “environmentally friendly”, and “biodegradable”.[61] Citing avoidance of costly litigation, Monsanto settled the case, admitting no wrongdoing, and agreeing to remove the offending advertising claims in New York State.[61]

Environmental and consumer rights campaigners brought a case in France in 2001 accusing Monsanto of presenting Roundup as “biodegradable” and claiming that it “left the soil clean” after use; glyphosate, Roundup’s main ingredient, was classed by the European Union as “dangerous for the environment” and “toxic for aquatic organisms”. In January 2007, Monsanto was convicted of false advertising and fined 15,000 euros. The result was confirmed in 2009.[62][63]

On 27 March 2020 Bayer settled claims in a proposed class action alleging that it falsely advertised that the active ingredient in Roundup Weed & Grass Killer only affects plants with a $39.5 million deal that included changing the labels on its products.[64]

In June 2023, Bayer reached a $6.9 million settlement agreement with the New York attorney general, settling false advertising allegations concerning the safety of Roundup.[65]

Roundup has far less impact on the environment than humans. We need to come with a warning label. Highly toxic.

The earth can shake us off any time and there ain’t a damn thing we can do about it. 5 days after the grid goes down it will be like a real life zombie movie..I might not live to see it but a little prepping might help.

If they can’t burn it, can they mow it? Better than nothing.
