Disclaimer: Mr. Jones should be presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

James Eugene Jones, AKA Jimmy Jones, was arrested by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department on March 3 for two misdemeanors and one felony charge.

North Coast residents may recognize Jimmy Jones’ name, in large part because Jim Jones is widely believed to have been the last person to have seen Danielle Bertolini and Sheila Franks alive. Both Franks and Bertolini went missing in 2014 in the Eel River Valley within days of each other. Partial remains have been found belonging to both women, confirming their deaths, though finding enough evidence to make an arrest has proved elusive.

Though the Fortuna Police Department has said that they have identified a suspect, they have never officially named the suspect.

Redheaded Blackbelt began receiving tips over the weekend that Jones was in the Rio Dell/Scotia area and exhibiting what some described as stalking behavior.

On Monday, March 4, the Humboldt County Booking Log listed James Eugene Jones as being booked into custody on March 3, at 8:59 p.m. The arresting charges against Jones are listed as misdemeanor possession of methamphetamines, misdemeanor possession of a switchblade knife, and felony stalking.

We have reached out to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department for comment, however, at press time, we have received no response to our request.

Earlier:

Update 11:14 a.m.: We have updated this article to include the booking photo of James E. Jones obtained from the HCSO’s Crime Graphics website.

Update 1:48 p.m. – Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department:

On March 1, 2024, at about 8:50 p.m., deputies from Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 100 block of Main St. in Scotia for the report of a male subject who was reportedly loitering and making odd comments to a local business owner.

Upon arrival, deputies located the male subject in the area of Church Street. He was identified as Rio Dell resident, 50-year-old James Jones. He was advised of the complaint and asked to leave the area.

On March 2, at about 8:21 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Communication Center received a call from the same business owner who was reporting the subject had returned and was loitering outside the business again. Jones left the area prior to the deputies’ arrival. The deputies contacted the business owner and provided her information on how to obtain a restraining order.

On March 3, at about 6:18 p.m., HCSO dispatch received another call from the same business owner stating that Jones had returned to her business and was in the parking lot waiting for her. Prior to the deputies’ arrival, dispatch advised the caller was at her residence and she did not feel comfortable going to the business with him there. A few minutes later HCSO dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from her stating Jones was standing outside her residence.

Upon arrival, deputies contacted Jones in the 100 block of Main Street. After further investigation Jones was taken into custody for stalking, possession of a switchblade knife and possession of methamphetamine.

James Jones was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility and booked for (PC 646.9(A)) Stalking, (PC 21510(A)) Possession of a switchblade knife and (HS 11377(A)) Possession of a controlled substance.

This case is still under investigation.

Anyone with information about this case or related criminal activity is encouraged to call the

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at (707) 268-2539.

He is still in lockup as of this afternoon. You can easily verify someone’s custody status one way or the other by doing a quick search at https://vinelink.vineapps.com/.

87 pages of bookable warrants, roughly 10 perps per page. the occupancy of the jail is 441. do the math.

I’m not familiar with prop 47.
But prop 1, currently on the ballot, might be a first step to dealing with what seems to be obvious mental illness in this man.

What did the person look like who he was stalking?
Similar body frame and height as the other murdered woman.

I’m just shocked and surprised that possession of methamphetamine is only a misdemeanor.

With the havoc caused by abuse of that drug, it seems it should be more strictly classified.

I thought the meth epidemic was winding down, but I guess not.

It is a horrible substance and has caused so much damage.

I’m sure there are some rare need for the drug, perhaps in hospital settings, but, generally it should be eliminated.

But, then, I’m sure someone will advise that it’s now produced illegally…so stopping its manufacturing would likely not help much.

CA voters voted to be nice to these “victims” of meth who use it…oh yeah they need help alright. NO- WE need help keeping them away from US! Buy I do feel that pendulum starting to swing back. After Trump comes in we will be seeing some draconian drug reforms…it’s a bummer we had to go so far in allowing the druggies to turn every city to literal crap. The pushback will be brutal….

It’s because they can’t get money off of methheads. That’s all it’s about what bring in the $$$ nothing else.

How dreadful for the victim. I hope they have taken proactive steps to protect themselves.

This guy? He is rumored to be a murder of multiple women. I’m glad he at least went to jail for this. A lot of people are afraid of him. Maybe some evidence will come up?

I second that motion. This dude probably doesn’t realize how lucky he actually is. I don’t know the family of the women who are missing, but I know that there are dads out there, who after losing their daughter, would’ve found this guy and pulled an answer out of him.

Gratitude to all the California lawmakers who were the first to make stalking a felony in 1990. https://www.ojp.gov/ncjrs/virtual-library/abstracts/anti-stalking-statutes

Umm… this is not THAT Jim Jones. I’m not saying I approve of his actions but it is an entirely different James Jones than the fella who was a suspect in disappearance of the two ladies and I am surprised that nobody else seems to be aware of that. I hope this Jimmy gets his shit together and that nobody whacks him just because of this article. Pretty dangerous accusations in this neighborhood. Do more research before putting someone on blast for something they had nothing to do with. Journalists have a lot of power and it must be used responsibly PLEASE AND THANK YOU

Grumpy, We understand your concerns about the potential for mistaken identity and the serious nature of the accusations mentioned. This is the man whose image has been said to be the last person to see Sheila and Danielle since at least 2015. We knew we were right but even so, in light of your comment and in light of the seriousness of the two women’s disappearance, we have double confirmed with the Fortuna Police Department that the individual, James Jones, whose photo we published, is indeed a person of interest in the disappearance of the two women. We apologize for holding your comment, we would have released it no matter what the response from FoPD would have been but, of course, our response would have had to have been drastically different in the extremely unlikely chance we had been led astray by numerous people.

When I was a young-er Jim Jones was a terrible leader of a cult that ended up making his followers drink Kool ade that had poison and everyone died. Very sad..then one day I met a Jim Jones around here in Humboldt..crazy guy, but I hope he wasn’t a killer, so there must be another one up here…wow. I thought it was a the Jim I knew but that isn’t his pic.so thank you for pointing this out..don’t name your kids Jim if your last name is Jones..it seems to carry some heavy karma with it..
Anyway..so don’t waste time
. Love life y’all.., and pass the love around..and try to make good choices..
…it’s easy..all you need is love..all you need is love love ..love is all u need, love is all you need, love is all you need……..

I can guarantee that this Jim Jones is a murderer, I don’t have any information on these two cases but I know what he did to me.

So sad to see so many vigilante and Trumper messages here…guess they’re the mostly ones with enough time to comment( and of course nothing about victims) just an opportunity for getting their own rocks off via violent revenge and to hell with the system created by generations of dedication and hard work. Authoritarianism and a police state are well on their way according to this comment section. Nothing about research and prevention in which there have been gains, corroborated over and over and yet not applied; just like ecology was ignored and our capacity to even hope to affect it for the better lost due to myopic denial and short term focus.

Jones was arrested in Eugene Oregon June 8, 2022 for breaking into a house attempting to steal keys, carjacked another person at knife point. He won’t stop ? keep an eye out he’s not going to stop.
