Sheriff’s Office Releases a Little More Information on Sheila Franks

Sheila FranksInformation from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On 06-10-2019, a citizen located what was believed to be a human bone.  The bone was found near the mouth of the Eel River and delivered to the Coroner’s Office.  Investigators from the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office responded to the area and conducted a search in an attempt to locate further items or remains.  None were located.  The bone was examined by anthropologists and then sent to the DOJ Bureau of Forensic Services laboratory in Richmond, Ca. for DNA testing.  The Sheriff’s Office had previously secured DNA from family members and that was used in the comparisons.  In September, the Sheriff’s Office received written notice from the DOJ that the bone was in fact a femur belonging to that of Shelia Franks.

As to the status of the cases, both (Franks and Bertolini) are open investigations.  The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigating agency on the Shelia Franks case and Fortuna Police Department is the lead investigating agency in the case involving Danielle Bertolini.  Both agencies continue to work closely together and share information.  The cause and manner of death are undetermined at this time.  The case is not labeled “Homicide”, however, it is suspicious and is being investigated accordingly.  As to a “person of interest” versus “suspect,” no changes have been made to this point.  The person of interest is the same in both cases.

The Sheriff’s Office and Fortuna Police Department encourage anyone with information in either case to contact investigators at 707-445-7251 or 707-268-2539.

Why would the coronor wait nearly 90 days to inform family they had identified the skull?
It is sickening to think people had to wait at all for this information once it was known.

This is what the laundry room floor looked like when I ripped up the flooring. Blood was splattered all the way into the kitchen just little spots not noticeable unless your looking in which I have been looking since I saw those walls bleed.

it takes a couple months for DNA results to come back. they can’t for sure tell the family until the test results come in.

Humboldt should have it’s own DNA and forensics lab at the rate we’re going.

No shit. We have more people claiming to be cannabis DNA testing labs than we do actual testing of human remains. Money is more important than life or death themselves apparently. I’d run a lab but it’d be 4 years at best to be useful (training, equipment costs, legal issues, etc.). And I still have bills to pay, so yeah, money……

I don’t understand why they don’t look harder into the fact that the last person seen with both girls worked as a butcher.
How many more girls have to die before they lock the scumbag up.
Can’t they make him do a polygraph test
It’s worth a shot

Agree, it seems the local small town police departments flop many cases, they should of called in the FBI to handle the case.

the FBI won’t just get involved unless there was something like a person being taken across state lines, or like when the Blue Lake police department imploded due to corruption and they had to come clean up that mess. The federal government, believe it or not, wants things to be handled at the local level first.

maybe they will

I believe they can get involved if it is a serial killer…

Poly graphs are not evidence. Unfortunately, TV has continued to portray them as evidence. They can be tools, but are ineffective in reality.

Polygraphs aren’t admissible in court. They’re junk pretending to be science. People can beat them with simple methods.

yet cops make a HUGE deal out of them when questioning alleged suspects.
You take it and don’t pass, you’re automatically hiding something and become even more of a person of interest. you DON’T take it, you’re automatically hiding something and become even more of a person of interest.

Having enough evidence to get a guilty conviction is the key here. If the courts let him go the police can never go back at him again. My family is presently in the same situation and waiting till the police gather enough evidence to convict and send to prison for life the scum that murdered my Niece. It is pure hell on the family……..never closure only justice….if your “lucky”……..
