California’s Senator Dianne Feinstein Has Passed

Senator Dianne Feinstein of California has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades of public service.

Born in San Francisco in 1933, Dianne Feinstein’s journey into the world of politics began long before her time in the Senate. Her early career in public service included serving as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where she made history as the first woman to hold the position of President of the Board. Her tenure during that tumultuous period, including the tragic assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, showcased her resilience. She then succeeded Moscone as mayor.

In 1992, Feinstein made history once again when she became the first woman to represent California in the United States Senate. Throughout her tenure, she became known for her commitment to a range of issues, including gun control, women’s rights, environmental conservation, and healthcare reform.

Feinstein’s tenure in the Senate also marked her as a key player in some of the nation’s most pressing debates. She played a pivotal role in crafting the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, a landmark piece of legislation aimed at reducing gun violence. Her work on the Senate Intelligence Committee, where she served as chairwoman, contributed to her reputation as a strong advocate for national security and intelligence oversight.

As she neared 90, her tenure in office became very controversial with many calling for her to resign.

Nonetheless, in a career that spanned more than six decades, Senator Feinstein strongly shaped the nation she served.

Press release from the Office of Senator Dianne Feinstein:

James Sauls, chief of staff to Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on the senator’s passing:

“Sadly, Senator Feinstein passed away last night at her home in Washington, D.C. Her passing is a great loss for so many, from those who loved and cared for her to the people of California that she dedicated her life to serving.

“Senator Feinstein never backed away from a fight for what was just and right. At the same time, she was always willing to work with anyone, even those she disagreed with, if it meant bettering the lives of Californians or the betterment of our nation.

“There are few women who can be called senator, chairman, mayor, wife, mom and grandmother. Senator Feinstein was a force of nature who made an incredible impact on our country and her home state.

“She left a legacy that is undeniable and extraordinary. There is much to say about who she was and what she did, but for now, we are going to grieve the passing of our beloved boss, mentor and friend.”

Gavin has so many bad choices.
The appointment would be through 2024, when the seat is up for election.
Three high profile Democrats are running for the seat — including a black woman. They are Reps. Barbara Lee, Katie Porter, and Adam Schiff. They are facing off for a March 5 primary, when the top two candidates advance. Lee is currently trailing Porter and Schiff.
Newsom has said he would not appoint any of the current candidates to the position, ruling out Lee. He told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that it would be an “interim appointment.”
So Gavin wants to have a black women. No other qualification necessary. Just like our Vice President.

If you look it up, or have been following Barabra Lee’s political career she has been at this longer than Adam Schiff or Katie Porter,
It makes sense to me for her to get this appointment, not that Gavin Newsom has much sense often.

Average age of death of American women: 73. Average age of death of American men: 72. Our nation is falling apart because it is ran by people who are passed the expiration date. Just like sour milk, so goes the nation. We need fresh blood, not expired politicians, otherwise we all run the risk of our once great nation expiring along with them, or maybe it already has.

I agree that almost all our reps are too damn old. If Lee was just interim and promised not to run she is a person of very high integrity and I would support her. My choice would be Katie Porter

I am off but that was from memory, you could’ve actually refuted what I said instead of just a no you’re wrong. Per the cdc women 79 men 74. My statement still holds 100% true despite being off by 6 years for women and 2 years for men. Per your statement you missed the mark more than I. Put your actions where your words are..
Not all old people are old or have lost touch. I talk with folks >50 into their late 90’s that are more aware or have a broader scope of reality than many <50’s in my community.
I find the more thay have been though or have historical knowledge of the area often makes them good candidates.

Adam Schiff just got busted for taking bribes. He’s compromised, just like Biden. We’re f’ked..

9/25/2023
“ The Democratic congressman for years secured earmarks for defense companies while taking campaign donations from top corporate brass and Washington lobbyists.

But Schiff has offered an incomplete and potentially misleading account of his record on earmarks. A close examination of that record reveals that he secured generous earmarks for corporate beneficiaries early in his career, including at times for recipients who were also major donors to his political campaigns.“

not if we elect Katie Porter who does not take corporate campaign donations, and who represents a majority Republican district–meaning she knows how to see issues from a perspective that isnt about partisanship,, that is about how to serve the needs of te people from basic common sense.
we may not agree on much else, but i think that we would agree common sense and meeting the real needs of the people is what the times we are in call for.

Where do you get the idea “no other qualification necessary”? Do you think there are NO “qualified” Black women in CA? That’s not just racist & sexist; it’s abysmally stupid. Supposing the Gov said he wanted to appoint “a white man”? Would you respond by saying, “No other qualification necessary”? As for the VP, Kamala Harris is an extremely intelligent, well-informed, and able person; maybe you just don’t like her politics. And finally, since Harris was chosen as VP and left her Senate seat, there are NO Black women in the Senate. A Senator not only represents their state, but has to make decisions that affect the entire nation — so its membership should, ideally, reflect the diversity of the entire nation, even ignoramuses of whatever color/gender/ etc.

Nothing is as simple as haters see life. They think that getting rid of those they hate would instantly fix the problems that make them hate. So with this tantalizing prospect always just on the cusp of fruition, they picture this magical world that can’t exist. The reality is they hate because that is what they want to do. There is no world in which they will not hate. Their simplicity is believing their hate is caused by others and can be fixed. Never that their hate is caused by themselves holding onto fantasies that have no chance of existing, the biggest one being they think they know what is best.

No. That’s what you think it was about. And why you will never succeed in persuading any to give the least bit in exchange for getting something in return. So no one ends up with anything. In fact just the opposite. You will convince people to resist all the harder. In fact it’s likely you wouldn’t even recognize a victory if handed to you on a silver platter. Only would snatch defeat out of the Jaws of victory everytime.

I suspect Ginsburg knew exactly what she was doing and did it for a reason completely unrelated to either ego or a desire to work until the day she died. A woman with her credentials and integrity probably didn’t want to be replaced by someone with neither who would instead be given the job because of demographics. Someone, for instance, who doesn’t know what a woman is.

“It has been suggested by more than one commentator, including some law professors, that I should have stepped down during President Obama’s second term,” said Ginsburg, 86, as reported by CNBC. “When that suggestion is made, I ask the question: Who do you think that the President could nominate that could get through the Republican Senate? ‘Who you would prefer on the court [rather] than me?”

SAN FRANCISCO /
Newsom joins Feinstein on sister-city trip to Shanghai / Hong Kong and Beijing also on mayor’s itinerary
By Rachel Gordon, Chronicle Staff Writer

Nov 25, 2005

Mayor Gavin Newsom sets off today for a visit to China, where he will lead a delegation with U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein to celebrate the 25th anniversary of San Francisco’s historic sister-city relationship with Shanghai.

It was Feinstein, a California Democrat, who forged the relationship in 1980 when she was mayor of San Francisco, opening new cultural, educational and economic channels between the United States and China. It was the first sister-city relationship between the two nations.

“We have become increasingly entwined. The relationship should not be taken lightly,” said Newsom, who has never traveled to Asia before. He also will stop in Beijing and Hong Kong before returning home Dec. 4. Feinstein will skip the last leg in Hong Kong.

The China trip is Newsom’s second international trip this year in his capacity as mayor. In September, he traveled to Cork and Dublin in Ireland and to London.
Newsom is the third high-profile U.S. politician to make the trek to China this month, following behind President Bush and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“Politically, China is the hippest place to go,” said Jim Ross, a San Francisco political consultant who ran Newsom’s day-to-day mayoral race in 2003.

The mayor, Ross said, can score points on a couple of fronts. One, nearly 20 percent of San Francisco’s population has roots in China, and it’s important for the mayor to form personal ties with their ancestral homeland. Two, “if you’re a politician with a broader view beyond the local scene, that’s the place to be,” he said. Newsom can use the trip to build his international credentials and build relationships with future Chinese leaders.

In the past 20 years, the Chinese population in San Francisco has increased 85 percent and represents an increasingly important political bloc; it was crucial to Newsom’s mayoral win, Ross said.

The relationships Newsom cements now with Shanghai’s political leaders may prove beneficial if he seeks higher office. Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin and former Chinese premier Zhu Rongji once served as mayor of Shanghai, a city that has served as a training ground for national leaders in China.

The San Francisco delegation to China is expected to number about 60 at its peak. The participants represent a mix of corporate, cultural, educational and government interests. Former Mayor Frank Jordan, who led a mission to Asia when he was mayor in 1993, also will attend.

Organizers of such mayoral-led international missions script a tightly packed schedule of events in an effort to counter the perception that these excursions are junkets with time for golfing and loafing. There are plans for lighter moments, however, including a visit to the Great Wall and a session for Newsom to shoot hoops with one of China’s star female basketball players.
Newsom is scheduled to speak to business groups in Shanghai and Hong Kong, where he will make the pitch that San Francisco is a good place for Chinese businesses to invest and set up shop. He said he will emphasize San Francisco’s desire to grow as a hub for the digital and biotech industries.
In Beijing, Newsom will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new drug development center operated by Bridge Pharmaceuticals Inc., which is headquartered in Menlo Park.

Newsom also plans to hold a private meeting with representatives of Air China to see about expanding direct flights between China and San Francisco International Airport.
“The governor did a very good job of promoting California as a gateway to the Pacific,” Newsom said. “I’m going to be promoting the San Francisco Bay Area. The timing is very good.”

He’ll preside over the formal signing of an agreement between UCSF and Beijing University to work together on biomedical research.
He and Shanghai’s mayor, Han Zheng, will sign a memorandum of understanding — the ninth between the two cities since the formal relationship was hatched — that will lay out plans for Shanghai to create a “healing garden” on the grounds of the UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion in the Western Addition.
In addition, the agreement calls for San Francisco to send about a half-dozen business people to Shanghai for internships at companies there for six months to give them first-hand insight into the ways of doing business in China, which has turned into one of the world’s powerhouse economies.
The memorandum of understanding also spells out plans for short-term exchanges between the two cities involving police officers, attorneys and judges, said James Fang, chairman of the San Francisco-Shanghai Sister City Committee, which organized the trip.
“This trip is very meaningful,” Fang said. “First and foremost, we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of our sister-city relationship with China and building on our history as we set out to develop new projects to work on together.”
And with any mission of this sort, ceremony will play a big part.
Newsom will present his hosts with bottles of cabernet, made by the PlumpJack winery he helped form in the Napa Valley. He’ll also give people specially made crystal plaques commemorating the trip and etched with a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge.
There will be a lot of eating, and the formal Chinese banquets are a test for any San Francisco mayor, most notably when it comes to keeping up with the hosts during the toasts. Mao tai, the rice-based liquor traditionally used for such occasions, is potent, and it’s not uncommon for a person to imbibe in a dozen or more shots at a dinner.
Among the others on the delegate roster are Feinstein’s husband, investor Richard Blum; and executives with such firms as Bridge Pharmaceuticals, Citibank, United Commercial Bank and Oracle Corp.
Socialite Ann Getty, an old family friend of Newsom’s, and Joe Cotchett, a politically connected attorney and one of Newsom’s former business partners, are delegates, too. The San Francisco Symphony and the University of San Francisco also will be represented.
Much of the trip is being underwritten by corporate sponsors, including General Motors, Citigroup, Bechtel, Newbridge Capital, LexisNexis, K. Wah Group and United Commercial Bank. Organizers declined to release the amount of contributions, and under local reporting laws are not required to divulge the financial details. The Sister City Committee is a nongovernmental entity.
Newsom intends to pay his own way, said the mayor’s press aide, Peter Ragone.
Newsom acknowledged that some participants on the trip have business with the city, or are seeking to do business with the city, and said he will do everything he can “to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest or actual conflict of interest. I am not interested in participating in something that’s quid pro quo.”

It is sad that she couldn’t retire 20 years earlier and let someone else try to stop the incredible logjam that she and her contemporaries maintained…

A succession of bad leaders, from Reagan to Biden, and Feinstein, Pelosi et al, have made a mishmash of America, which is about to be overrun with invaders from the rest of the poor ports of the world…

The meek will inherit nothing, but Richard Blum’s kids will be happy to divide up the proceeds from Federal Contracts obtained through Feinstein’s efforts…

She stayed in there to protect her own misdeeds from discovery, and to continue to block change. Her most significant acts were pretty minor, historically, but she had a rough time in her last 2-3 years and should have been replaced.

Pelosi is no better, on the few days of the week when she isn’t drunk by 10AM…

Newsom knows better than to pounce, just now, but merely placing persons “of color” (we are all a color) is no measure of progress, and Newsom will have to succeed on merit, just like the rest of those who are mere cat’s paws of the extremely wealthy…

When she was on the witness stand during White’s trial, she admitted to such, but said she gave it up after a botched bombing at her house.

She’s always been a phony, for the exact reason Permanently on Monitoring stated: She’s 100% about her and hers … none of her constituents really mattered, just getting reelected and padding her palace.

I bet she couldn’t believe she pulled it off. Dan White gave her such a beautiful gift.

She waited until she could be sure we wouldn’t get another cracked quackjob judge. Her final vote. 24 hours before she died. Went to work JUST to do that. Rest in Power lady! Yes, we need to support the younger politicians.

It must have been so difficult for her in recent years. Her husband died, she was in a legal battle with her kids, her political allies were trying to force her out, and her health was rapidly failing.

I rather thought she failed.

It’s sad when anyone dies, But she should have retired from the senate. Anybody should when you’re too old to cast her own vote.

Newsome has some superb choices to fill her seat, I hope it’s Katie Porter.

Adversity from the effects of age and illness verses the desire to keep on keeping on to advance one’s ideals. John Mc Cain continued to contribute to his political beliefs while dealing with brain cancer. Diane Feinstein’s internal strength may be overlooked by the physical frailty seen in the news pictures.

I met her in Washington DC a number of years ago. She amazed me with her knowledge of American history. She was a caring individual and treated the group of visiting Americans like we were her friends. She would make Trump seem like he was a preschooler which he is. Whoever replaces her will need to fill some very large shoes.

Indeed…

I’m sure Greasy Gavin will choose someone who fits those shoes perfectly.

One down, Pelosi to go. If we could get rid of the hairdo, all would be good. Schiff should be arrested for all the lies he spews.
