Hwy 199, which has been plagued by intermittent closures due to flames from the Smith River Complex and associated rock slides, has finally reopened today after being shut down yesterday evening. The closure, which was necessary to ensure public safety in the wake of the 85,000 acre wildfires and resulting unstable rock formations, has been a recurring challenge since mid-August when lightning storms ignited a series of wildfires in the area. However, anticipate delays of up to one hour.

Caltrans announced the reopening of Hwy 199 at 7:34 am on Monday, September 11. However, travelers should be aware that the road is open for one-way traffic control only. This controlled access extends from Patrick Creek to the Collier Tunnel, covering a stretch of approximately 13 miles between Post Mile 19 and Post Mile 32. Caltrans posted on Facebook, “U.S. 199 in Del Norte County is OPEN now as of 7:30 am, Monday, September 11- to one-way traffic control thanks to a CHP escort between Patrick Creek and the Collier Tunnel.”

The reopening is good news for the community, commuters and travelers. But Caltrans warns, “Please anticipate up to one-hour delays and note the situation is subject to change due to the Smith River Complex Fire.”

Caltrans continues to closely monitor the situation and provide updates to ensure the safety of all road users. They advise individuals to stay informed by following their social media channels and checking the latest road conditions on the Caltrans QuickMap app.

1 hour delay is a lot better than totally closed. On the bright side, 1 way traffic will be easier driving thru the tight spots where the canyon walls are right next to the road.
