With wind whipping through Southern Humboldt, Cal Fire has sent a full wildland response to a new fire that started between Reed Mountain and Tooby Ranch just before 12:30 p.m.

According David Kanssen, Public Information Officer for the Cal Fire, Humboldt Del Norte Unit, he has not yet learned the estimated size of the fire.

However, he was able to tell us that Cal Fire had dispatched three engines, several handcrews out of Eel River, and a helicopter.

There is also a Air attack circling above the fire.

UPDATE 1:54 p.m.: According to Lauren Schmitt from KMUD, “Crews on scene report that there is a line around the fire’s perimeter and the forward progress has been stopped at 3 acres.”

UPDATE 3:16 p.m.: According David Kanssen, Public Information Officer for the Cal Fire, though forward progress has been stopped there are still several engines and handcrews working. The windy weather is making crews be extra cautious. He told us though, “We anticipate having full control sometime this evening.” The final acreage was just under four acres, he said.

I just talked to the people that live on the property and he said a tree company dropped a tree into the power lines.

Not only did they drop a tree they tried to cover up that they hadn’t used proper falling protocols, denied having done anything when asked why power was out and tried to cover it up by chopping stump to ground and covering it with leaf litter. He should have called it in directly when he hit the line.

I got to say I was worried about my sohum friends. This wind is not helping with any of the fires I’m sure.
Be sure and thank a fireman when you see them. It’s a bad time of year for sure. Thank you to the firemen you are very much appreciated. ❤️
