Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office mounted a multi-agency campaign today to rescue a mother and daughter who went missing in the snowy hills above Laytonville last Friday, March 3, 2023.

MCSO Captain Greg Van Patten has confirmed that Lisa Herbstritt was found by Mendocino County Search and Rescue in her vehicle near the top of Spy Rock Road. Her daughter Tabitha had made her way to a boyfriend’s sometime this weekend. Both are making their way down Spy Rock with rescuers.

Partnering with Mendocino County’s Department of Transportation, MendoSAR used a SnoCat and an ATV equipped with tracks while plows from DOT cleared the roadway. At one point, a cadre of rescuers needed rescue themselves after the Snocat lost a track and became inoperable.

Captain Van Patten was told by rescuers they encountered snow drifts they estimated were eight feet deep.

Our neighborhood rescue/supply snow quad lost the front track bolts too. Quick work by the neighbors had it back on the road supplying 3 house for another 7-10 days of isolation. Lucky to have skilled, prepared and caring neighbors at 3600 feet right now. Country folk can survive.

What happened to Lisa’s mother? The two women started out to get her and bring her down to the valley.

That snowdrift is not 8′ high.

That’s a high side of the road. The plowed snow looks to be 3-4′ max, and plowed banks are always higher than original snow.

That’s plowing 1-2 foot deep snow.
