Emergency personnel are responding with lights and sirens to the report of a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound east west of Garberville just before 4 p.m. on November 11.

Scanner traffic indicates the reporting party, an off-duty Alameda Police officer is stating that a subject is inside a white Toyota Tacoma along the 5400 block of Old Briceland Road with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The dispatcher stated that the vehicle is along the road between Garberville and Briceland, possibly near the Marshall Ranch.

The dispatcher relayed that the reporting party is unable to find the weapon.

First responders are en route to the scene.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

Update 4:15 p.m.: The coroner was requested.

At this time, it is unconfirmed whether this is a suicide, homicide or accidental shooting.

We have requested information from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office; however, their Public Information Officer is off for the Veteran’s Day holiday.

We will update when more information becomes available.

Update 7:00 p.m.: Reviewing a recording of the scanner traffic recorded when the incident was first reported, revealed further details. The emergency dispatcher stated, “He’s reporting he’s unsure where the firearm is. States that it does not look self-inflicted but appears to it was made that way.” Presumably, the “he” that the dispatcher is referring to would be the off-duty Alameda Police officer who was the reporting party.

That is, of course, not an official determination by investigating law enforcement personnel. Determining cause of death requires intricate police work that takes time. Until the HCSO makes an official statement, please remember that information gathered as emergency personnel first respond to an incident may be incorrect.

No weapon found, as of reporting time. Unless information changes. That’s the do. It’s murder. Anger, fear, avarice, revenge. Which one?

What if it was a self inflicted gunshot at his house and he was trying to make it to the hospital but didnt. Then he probably wouldnt have brought the gun with him

Briceland is east of Garberville? No wonder I keep having trouble finding it.

Off duty Alameda cop on old briceland rd?? You would be hard pressed to find a on duty or off duty local cop there, an out of county cop.. right, he was just out picking flowers in the rain in the middle of nowhere

My gps was set to “avoid highways” once by accident. In that mode it will take you through all kind of weird back roads. Let’s say the off duty cop was in Shelter cove, and punched in Alameda. The Old Briceland road is a nice scenic alternative if you want to skip Garberville/Redway, and maybe fewer miles to home. Lucky he didn’t try the Usal. Just as easily could have been any of us running into something like that.

Right because so many cops live amongst us that maybe it is true. I didn’t want to say it but Alameda cops have been in the game since the BGF, so I wouldn’t put it past a Santa Rita storm trooper being in our neighborhood.. living comfortable and having friends and neighbors respect you and your profession, that’s a whole nother story or can of worms.

Also.. I know some of you don’t know about chain of custody or onsite sop. But you don’t go touching or looking at anything solo unless your attempting to rescue. This is the golden rule, it was made because cops would get caught trifling the dead or worse. Accountability one could say was gone.

Edit: As for conspiracy, you sound like a cop [edit] so I will break this down to you.

Conspiracy requires 2 to tango.. cop and poor dead individual would qualify as a conspiracy atleast according to our immaculate legal system and their grand juries.

I am wrong entirely in all my post on this subject. RIP homie, a more solid individual couldn’t be found. We’re heart broken here.

To anyone reading this… You are not alone in this world. Though the dark days are hard to bear and the weather doesn’t help, the financial situation doesn’t either, You have friends, you have friends you don’t even know, reach out, reach out, we all have our struggles and only together can we conquer our own minds and touch the light.

Read the comment rules? “No slurs–racial, ethnic, gender, political etc” that includes calling officers “pigs” or “piggies.”

I’m pretty sure that Nono isn’t quite sane or at least is unable to articulate his issues with me clearly. However, he went too far in advocating a bullet for another commenter and has been banned.

He likes to play games pretending he has power by sending me rather awful private messages threatening me and my family. I suspect he a bit of a wuss. And yes, this is a message directed at him because he’s so cowardly that he can’t deal with me directly even though I know he knows my email and my phone number.

I might be a little out of touch but I don’t believe Fish and Wildlife issue tags for people yet, They may in the future as they are always looking for funding.

Who needs a judicial system, judges, or juries when the court of public opinion has a man not even hinted at as a suspect is tried and convicted here and now?

I’m reminded of a case few couple years ago of a severely mentally ill woman inflicting harm on her child at Centerville Beach. A male passerby stopped to aid the child. Said court immediately jumped on other bystanders who were accused of doing nothing. No one could entertain a different scenario other than they were cowards.

Turns out the other bystanders were the male’s family, including children. He was trying to protect them by having them keep their distance while fighting off the mother.

How awful for the families of both the victim and the cop who found him who might stumble upon these hateful comments.

No doubt it is a waste of my time and energy to post a comment in this vein. Thank you to those who didn’t jump to ridiculous conclusions.

The update supplies all the mundane details that make a conspiracy speculation look very silly indeed. Yes, an Alameda (not Oakland) officer was there to go turkey hunting. Yes, he took charge of the death scene until local LE could arrive for their death investigation. Their finding was suicide.
