A traffic collision involving two vehicles was reported on the scanner in Eureka shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday Friday near the intersection of Broadway and West Wabash Avenue. Southbound travelers are being detoured off Broadway.

Initial reports came in around 2:55 p.m. and indicated that at least one vehicle had crashed into a building. According to scanner reports, one occupant was trapped inside a vehicle and required extrication by firefighters. Emergency personnel are going to have to roll off the roof to get to the patient. The vehicle, possibly a Chevy Silverado, is wedged between the building and a tree.

Two dogs are also in the vehicle.

Images from Caltrans traffic cameras show emergency vehicles converging on the intersection, including fire apparatus blocking lanes on Broadway.

The extent of injuries has not yet been confirmed.

Traffic was heavily impacted in the area as Eureka Police, fire personnel, and medical responders worked at the scene. Motorists were advised to avoid the Broadway/Wabash corridor and expect delays.

This is a developing story. Additional details will be added as more information becomes available.

I think one of the driver’s thought Adel’s was a drive thru. All kidding aside, I hope the driver and his two dogs are ok. Thank you to all the first responders for your work at the accident site.

I would have expected this to occur at Kristina’s, not Adel’s.

Both intersections are poorly laid out for those who have an issue driving while in Eureka …

About a week ago the brick and wood fence at Kristina’s was hit.

Each time we’re seated in the lower dining area at Adels, I always think about this exact thing occurring.

I hope everyone’s okay.

Caltrans had nothing to do with the accident. They designed the streets according to plans. We had a chance to bypass all this stuff, but everyone screamed and did not want the bypass, hence smash.

Caltrans keeps the speed limits high and prevents the city from taking action on broadway because it’s a state highway

Caltrans has no business setting the speed limits on Broadway (highway 101). The city should take this matter to court. With all the bad accidents overs the years I think Caltrans would definitely loose the case. If it continues, and probably will expect more accidents.

Caltrans is only answerable to the state, and they have a lot of influence there.

If you look, the intersection doesn’t have a separate left turn signal. Not at Hawthorne, and not at 4th and 5th at R St. coming off the Samoa Bridge. Because there’s no left turn signal, left-turning drivers and pedestrians in the crosswalk are sharing the same space at the same time.

The reason for not having separate left turn signals is to prevent congestion, which Caltrans seems to believe is more important than people’s lives.

That intersection won’t get better with time. It’s heavy load of traffic is a bottle neck. Confusing to those who just want to get through eureka. You can thank Daley’s department store, bistrins clothing and Leon’s muffler for having a planned bypass around eureka cancelled by caltrans under political pressure.

Thank you Daly’s, Bistrin’s and Leon’s Muffler and Brake.

This dangerous intersection should become a roundabout. Ppl slow when approaching a roundabout, whilst they tend to speed up for an amber light.
But, please use turn signals negotiating roundabouts 🙂

The state just passed AB1014 in January which would allow the city to ask Caltrans to lower the speed limit on Broadway. Yet the city has not moved forward with this. This another accident that could have been avoided if city leadership acted with urgency.

I think that the posted speed limits are not the problem, it’s people going 10-20 over the posted limit that create the problems. And pedestrians regularly wandering across traffic lanes.

It’s both shitty driver’s, bad pedestrians/cyclists (I’ve seen ppl camped out in the middle of Broadway with a bike and cart). Then lastly, it’s poor traffic planning. CALTrans messed up by putting a freeway straight through a town. Then the City of Eureka messed up by adding stoplights/stop signs at bad spots and creating perfect conditions for road rage, bad times traffic lights, and blind corners.

It’s utterly idiotic to have a 30 mph speed limit and red lights every other block; that’s a recipe for crashes when pedestrians and other vehicles try to scurry across.

101 was a thoroughfare through Eureka since 1926 when it was first opened as such. Yep. It’s been around a century.

People are only doing what they’re told; three 13′ wide lanes (that’s how wide freeway lanes are) tell drivers to go fast, so they do. Two 10′ wide lanes tell drivers to go slower, so they will; if Caltrans will let them.

Dropping the speed limits to oh…bicycling speeds won’t do a thing about those that willfully do 60-70. Or 100.

But with so many wide lanes, posting signs won’t really do anything. Caltrans designed a highway through a city and that’s how it operates.

CRTP’s petition asking Caltrans to make safety improvements on 4th and 5th and fund planned safety improvements on north Broadway seems to have had an effect; even before they turned it in, flashing pedestrian crossing beacons were being installed, so they’re doing something at least. Let’s hope this isn’t all of it.

It is the next day now, does anybody have any real information on this crash?
Too fast? Medical? Hate for Adel’s?

I can’t find any updates on this accident or what caused it. I really don’t think thought that it was caused by hate for Adel’s. I sure would not have wanted to be seated in a booth where the truck hit. It could have easily injured or killed someone.
