On the evening of January 24, a commercial crabbing boat, the Sunup, lost propulsion and crashed at the entrance to Humboldt Bay near the South Jetty. Three of its crew had to be rescued. The vessel eventually broke up and parts of it sunk. The Coast Guard closed the channel until the Channel was declared safe, and, on January 27, the entrance to the Bay was reopened even though parts of the ship were unrecovered.

On this Friday and Saturday, several companies worked together to remove the remaining parts of the vessel from out of the water. According to photographer Jae Wood who captured much of the recovery, Zerlang & Zerlang Marine Services, Corbet Diving, Coos Bay Tug, Halcyon Offshore Inc, Mercer Fraser Company assisted in the operation to haul the Sunup out of the entrance bar and channel.

Very sorry for the owners of the boat. Great pictures showing the boat removal. Hope the fisherman can obtain another vessel, and start fishing again.
