Pivoting Quickly: Providing Drive-Through Access to Food Showed a Successful Model for Future Emergencies

Sometimes emergency situations free up creative solutions. Friday’s overwhelmingly successful drive-through food distribution held by Food for People in partnership with Cooperation Humboldt and a number of other agencies was an innovative response to a rapidly increasing need for more food. The non-profit saw a community forced to Shelter-in-Place in the face of a worldwide pandemic with a decreased number of volunteers able to help distribute it.

“It was very successful,” Carly Robbins, Development Director for Food for People, told us. “We had people lining up well before two. In a half hour, we gave out well over 300 boxes.” They continued to give out food until four p.m.

Robbins explained that with a number of jobs having been lost, some community members are struggling to afford food. “I think everyone knows that things are getting tough for people around here,” she said. “Today’s distribution points to how many people are really needing a little extra help.”

But Food for People and their partners were able to quickly identify a way to get large amounts of food out to those in need with decreased access to their normal volunteers all while maintaining appropriate social distancing and wearing equipment to protect both the wearer and those getting the food. “The whole idea [of a drive-through distribution center] came to fruition in a week,” Robbins told us. “We only had a couple days to [get the word out].”

ocal law enforcement helped with the traffic control.

Local law enforcement helped with the traffic control.

Luckily, they had help. “We had some amazing partners,” she said. “Without all of their help, we couldn’t have pulled it off.” She named Cooperation Humboldt, the EPD, the CHP and Uplift Eureka as partners that made the project a success.

Christina Gallagher, a Humboldt County In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) caregiver, drove her 62-year-old client into Eureka to receive the food pick up. She got there 15 minutes before the 2 p.m. start time and said, “The experience was quick, efficient, and pretty well organized. [There were] lots of police and volunteers.” She said they were done by 2:20 p.m. She said the box held staples–“Dry goods type stuff, spaghetti, canned goods, 2% milk in a box, corn, peas, oatmeal…Canned peaches…[and] Canned tomatoes.”

Multiple volunteers kept the line moving. In roughly two hours they had distributed just more than half of the 600 boxes of food brought by Food For People.

Multiple volunteers kept the line moving.

Robbins, Development Director for Food for People, pointed out that it’s not just today that people have needed help. She explained, “Within the last three to four weeks–typically we send one truck load per month to some [food distributors]–but now we are doing sometimes two or three trips.”

Food for People has been struggling through adversity themselves. On February 28, several thousand gallons of sewage inundated their food storage site causing significant damage. “We moved out of that site,” Robbins said. The organization has leased two warehouses and the City of Eureka is letting them use the old Eureka Chamber on Broadway for direct distribution.

If anyone would like to help, Robbins said, “The most impactful way is to give a financial donation. We are trying to get as much food to help as possible.”

She suggested going to Food for People and looking for the donate link at the top of the page or sending a check to PO Box 4922, Eureka, CA 95502.

The group can also use volunteers. “We’re putting together small teams,” she explained. Fill out volunteer form online here.

“I think today is a perfect example of adapting to these times,” Robbins told us. “Having to pivot to deal with increased need with less resources is difficult, but we adapted and we’re successful. We’ll use this model in future emergencies.”

She followed up with an email saying, “At last count we had given out more 540 food boxes…[W]e asked everyone how [many were in their] household, so once the tally is counted we should have a good idea how many people will benefit from the food.”

There is absolutely no reason for this, they have flattened the curve while keeping the economy open in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea with masking and education.

Just remember, your handlers told you for 2 months not to touch a mask, it was dangerous even! They needed good spread. This is about destruction of capitalism and democracy and the rise of the Technocracy that will tell you what is good for you. This disease is 99% survivable, ask these people how survivable (through may 15th now) the lockdown is.

So, there’s no need for food for people who have been laid off and haven’t had a paycheck for the better part of a month? What are you talking about!? Oh and yes THANK YOU, FOOD FOR PEOPLE…

There is no need for a total economic shutdown and all these people lining up for food! When you have proven methods to not shut down the economy that flatten the curve and instead maximize economic pain and suffering the is an alternative motive. When the technocrats screwed up the testing, then screwed it up again, and again, and again, and still haven’t got it going after MONTHS when Germany and South Korea are testing more than our totals on a weekly basis, when they tell you not to touch a mask for 2 months, when they do everything for 3 months to maximize spread and minimize preparation for first responders, there is an alternative motive going on.

Yes there is a need and I think the people of New York would disagree with your opinion.

My opinion, independent of the Trump admin, which I am no fan of, but will separate so we don’t float boats we don’t need too, is that NY would totally agree with my opinion, and that you like the other poster are commenting without fully reading my post or comprehending it. No problem, if I was a greedy person or politician…

This is a disease. We can manage. As an engineered event, I got done in Jan.

I think that it is a wonderful idea to provide food to people from Food For People. It’s a great organization. However, I am concerned about those of us who do not need to use Food For People.

What are the ways old folks can get food delivered to them or families for that matter? I live in Fortuna and Safeway will deliver through Instacart. What are the other ways to get food?

The Healy Senior Center in Garberville will deliver food to seniors from Pepperwood to the Humboldt County line and from Alderpoint to Shelter Cove. I believe Seniors can call and order what they need and the delivery is free or by donation. Why don’t we have that kind of service from Fortuna to Eureka and Willow Creek to Samoa?

I don’t need Meals on Wheels, another great program. I just need someone who can take a shopping list from me electronically or by phone, pick up what I need and deliver it to
me.

I am 69 years old and use to be able to get to Grocery Outlet on my own a couple of times per month. However, I am a prime candidate for death by coronavirus. I have diabetes, a severe back injury, two types of cancer and take enough drugs to kill an average person. But, I’m not ready to die yet.

Does the Multi generation center in Fortuna have any resources that may help you? Sounds like volunteers and someone(s) with some organizational skills may be needed in the Fortuna area. I have zip organizational skills but I do have some mad shopping skills.

“American journalists talk about how bad a country is because people are lining up for food,” Bernie Sanders said. “That’s a good thing. In other countries people don’t line up for food. The rich get the food, and the poor starve to death.”

Because lining up for free food is a great sign of where your country is at…… we are fuked when this starts to happen. What’s next, free soup? When did it start in this country that “rich” people are to be shunned , degraded, demonized, and blamed. I thought this was a country of striving to be rich and successful through innovation, risk taking, and opportunities from living in a free country? Now we just lay in our backs and except breadcrumbs because we are to dumb and lazy to otherwise do so. America has no more backbone. We the people are weak and utterly will be treated so. I would rather eat squirrel and hard tack than wait in line. We are being tested people, wake the FUK up! They want you to slowly get the idea that this is normalcy. It’s not a good thing!

Anyone laid off will get unemployment, bonus $600, and the families will get literally hundreds of dollars in EBT. Furloughed people get FULL PAY under the deficit-breaking payout. No need for this politically correct spectacle. I’ve been out of work for six months with food stamps that last three weeks max. No shiny car (didn’t see any junkers in those lines) so no free carbs. Food for the Well Fed moved beyond reach way across town. To liberal non profits, everything is marketing, expired dairy be damned. Smoke and mirrors for local media that lap up the fake charity. Where are the churches? Hiding beyond video cameras. Where is the empathy? Reserved for the local business owners price gouging the poor every day but apparently cannot get through a months closure. No one cares about those of us who these same people refuse to employ. I’ll be on the streets soon thanks to the discriminating employers of Humboldt. Enjoy the drive through.

A shiny car doesn’t mean a person has lots of money, it most of the time means they are in debt.

From what I can see in the pictures, I’d say those cars average about 10-15 years old… I don’t see many beaters, but I don’t see many less than ten years old either.

It may mean their financial priorities are askew. There are some pretty fancy cars in that line. I’ve always wanted one of those Tacoma’s in the first picture, but a $50,000 truck just never made sense in my world. Even though I make pretty good money on two good jobs, plus rental income I could never afford that. That was a sweet Lexus in the later pic too. I just worry about the guys who didn’t get their box because of the ones who are shamefully taking advantage.
Food for People is awesome though, and doing a fantastic job!

Unemployment is not paying out timely. I’ve been without income, or any aid, since March 16, and have been trying every day. No response, no aid, no one to call, no paperwork. At the mercy of EDD to get it together on these claims.

Plant gardens folks! If you can find seeds. It’s good for your mind & body.

Record demand for food combined with a weakened supply chain is causing a risk of shortages throughout America, reported the Guardian on April 2. On a larger scale, the rest of the world is grappling with a similar problem. Nations are stockpiling food, and prices are rising. And all this is only a foretaste of greater food woes in the future.

Food banks and charities exist to serve the poor. Coronavirus has changed this. A wave of middle-class Americans are now turning to charities to supply their meals. Layoffs are only part of the picture. Much of it is also the reaction to an environment of fear. This is a natural extension of the panic-buying mentality on display around the world.

“First, we saw people who lived paycheck to paycheck, got laid off and didn’t know where the next meal was coming from, followed by those who had a couple of weeks of savings,” said Jerry Brown, a media spokesman for St. Mary’s Foodbank. “Now, people who knew about us because they donated or volunteered are coming in for food.”

A charity run by the University of Massachusetts distributed 849 percent more food this March compared to last year. The Salvation Army’s Massachusetts branch handed out 748 percent more food as well. Other food banks and charities around the United States have at least doubled their distribution.

Hunt and grow a garden? Self reliance? Love it hot coffee! But too many Americans….. why? There is free food and money! We the sheeple have not only imprisoned ourselves, we are lining up at the food trough’s. This just in! .0001% of the population has died from covid 19. Wonder how many will die from a economic depression. Looked at the stock markets lately. They stopped reporting on that, there is no stock market. There’s your sign. Returning to “Normalcy” is just a figment of our imagination

I really need to get the fuk out of my house, slightly starting to lose it…I did just help the wife and kids plant a veggie garden yesterday. Sun is shining , I need to remember my own mottos.

It’s too late to stock up or have a garden ready if you Did not do it beforehand. So while routine use of a food bank is not a successful lifestyle, this is an emergency. Thank goodness the food bank is there for people who either could not or simply didn’t prepare for emergencies. I plan to donate any emergency money I get from the government to them as I did plan ahead, was not caught by unfortunate timing and do not need much at the moment. Even if it is my political leaning to think that much of this distress is self inflicted, now is not the time to insist on people starving to prove my point.

You can prepare to plant a winters root veggie garden. It’s never to late to start something!

I’m actually more concerned about supply lines and weather for farmers than the virus.

And why dump milk? Powder it or make cheese! Garden to Fork!

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”—Viktor Frankl

We still have choices.

Just because we’re fighting an unseen enemy in the form of a virus doesn’t mean we have to relinquish every shred of our humanity, our common sense, or our freedoms to a nanny state that thinks it can do a better job of keeping us safe.

Whatever we give up willingly now—whether it’s basic human decency, the ability to manage our private affairs, the right to have a say in how the government navigates this crisis, or the few rights still left to us that haven’t been disemboweled in recent years by a power-hungry police state—we won’t get back so easily once this crisis is past.

The government never cedes power willingly. Neither should we.

Forget political sides and hang together as one people and be good to each other.
