Robert Porter and grandson Jonathan Archibold.
Robert Porter was known as Bob Porter by his friends. Bob was born in Arkansas in 1951 and raised in Downey, California. He and Cheri moved to Piercy in the 70’s as part of the “Back to the Land Movement.” He built a homestead, shoed horses, managed Cooks Valley Ranch, skinned cat, pulled green chain, repaired electronics, was a 4-H leader, Boy Scout Troop leader and a ham radio operator. Bob was always working hard, helping others or relaxing with a good book. Bob also was very active on the Piercy Fire Department for decades and saved numerous lives as the only EMT between Laytonville and Benbow in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.
Robert Porter, Cheri, Shanna and Shawn.
In the 90’s Bob started paving and running a hot plant. He moved to Ferndale, then Blue Lake and eventually retired to Rio Dell. After a couple years of failing health, Bob Porter died in Eureka on 5/29/19. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert & Murrel Porter, and the love of his life Cassandra.Bob is survived by his daughter Shanna Archibold, Stephen Archibold, grandson Jonathan Archibold, Shawn Porter, Alex and Lonnie Baker, and his brother Danny Porter.
In keeping with Bob’s wishes, we won’t make a big thing of it. But if you would like to remember him and share stories, please bring a potluck dish, beverage and chairs to Williams Grove on Sunday, October 20th at 2 PM. Williams Grove is on the Avenue of the Giants just north of Myers Flat.

I was talking with another person about Bob soon after he died but wasn’t aware of that at the time. Had lost contact with him years ago. He was always a willing and helpful friend to anyone who needed his help or advice. My condolences to all in his family. RIP Bob.
Remember Bob from the early Piercy days. A fine fellow.
