A military vehicle crash along State Route 299 east west of Weaverville resulted in one person injured and another temporarily trapped Tuesday Wednesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The single-vehicle crash occurred near mile marker 38.90, in the area of Chimariko Road and Wintu Pass, just after 1:20 p.m. A National Guard semi-truck reportedly left the eastbound side of the highway and rolled over, landing upside down off the roadway.

CHP dispatch logs indicate that one occupant was able to exit the vehicle and was brought up the embankment to safety. Another individual was initially trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency responders, including medical personnel, were dispatched to the scene. The extent of the injuries remains unclear, though the incident was initially reported as having only one injury.

The crash site was described as accessible via a nearby dirt road, and officials at the scene were asked to photograph the rear of the vehicle for proper notification procedures. The National Guard in Redding was also alerted to the incident.

Motorists in the area were advised to expect delays as emergency crews worked to stabilize the scene and clear the roadway. The cause of the crash is under investigation. No additional vehicles were reported to be involved.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Without any facts I can only say that many times there are accidents caused by drivers who operate larger, heavier vehicles as if they were driving their personal cars. Physics rules while power steering, automatic transmissions and cruise control abet!

I am very happy that the two National Guard personnel were not critically injured. I don’t know what type of vehicle they were driving but landing upside down is not good. If it was a truck some only have a canvas roof. Thank you to the California Highway Patrol and other Emergency Responders for their work at the scene. The soldiers protect us so it is nice when we can help them.

A convoy of them rolled thru Weaverville about 12:30, they were driving way too fast (through the old town). I was pretty shocked, actually.

If you know where the convoy came from just given them a call and complain about their driving too fast through old town. Guard or not that should not be tolerated!

Anyone know why there are no longer any National Guard units at the Eureka Armory. Only a couple of vehicles left in the lot. Back when I was a member, there were two engineer companies and an MP Platoon. That was over two hundred members. What a shame that there is no longer a National Guard presence in Eureka.

I agree with you Jimbo, but I have no idea where they went. One day the Guard lot was full and the next it was almost empty. I think they use the building to house homeless folks when the weather is very cold.
