Fourth Day With No New Positive COVID-19 Tests

April 10 Public Health Lab reportPress release from Humboldt County COVID19 – Joint Information Center:

Humboldt County’s case count remains at 50 as there were no additional positive cases for the fourth day in a row.

Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich said, “Other areas are seeing this slowing or pause in apparent transmission, and I am optimistic that our measures are having an impact. As we use this time to enhance preparedness, we are also looking at how we move forward through this pandemic.”

However, Frankovich cautioned that COVID-19 is still present and limiting the pace of transmission is essential. “It is imperative that spread happens gradually so that the health care system is never overwhelmed and unable to provide quality care for everyone,” she said. “Meanwhile, researchers are working hard on developing effective treatment which can also change the trajectory of this disease. I am deeply grateful to all Humboldt residents who are abiding by shelter-in-place orders and following recommendations that are keeping us all safe.”

For the most recent COVID-19 information, visit cdc.gov or cdph.ca.gov. Local information is available at humboldtgov.org or during business hours by contacting [email protected] or calling 707-441-5000.

Notes on patient and demographic data

To protect the identity of people with COVID-19, their specific location of residence will not be disclosed. The Humboldt County Public Health Branch is legally responsible for protecting personal health information, including residence address, specific age, recent travel, the identities and locations of any contacts, the provider of medical treatment, the course of illness and any other information that might identify an individual with or exposed to the virus unless it serves the interests of public health to do so.

Although we understand it is of interest to residents, providing location and demographic information to the general public does nothing to slow the spread of illness. Humboldt County is experiencing untraceable person-to-person transmission, also known as “community spread,” and there is no place that can be considered safe. To reduce your chances of acquiring or spreading COVID-19, avoid travel, wash your hands, keep yourself and your environment clean, follow the shelter-in-place order, and do not leave home for any reason unless it is absolutely necessary to do so.

The following case information is provided daily Monday through Saturday:

  • New positive cases
  • Total positive cases to date
  • Total hospitalizations to date
  • Total Public Health Lab tests to date
  • Total commercial lab tests to date
  • Public Health Lab test capacity, total and daily, and estimated turnaround time
  • Transmission data
    • traveler-acquired
    • contact to known case
    • community transmission

Additional information is provided each Friday:

  • Regional data
    • currently measured by percentage in densely populated area
    • soon to be represented instead by region after minimum thresholds of positive cases per region have been reached
  • Gender
  • Mean age
  • Test rates and positive test rates relative to the State of California.

Hallelujah for us. Bit of an update worldwide and then I’d like to explain myself.

The bad news. The death rate continues to climb worldwide and in the countries I track (except Germany with a slight decrease). Good news, the rate of increase has slowed significantly (except France and US).

Peeps have commented on my data recently without understanding what it is I’m trying to do. (And I promise this is the last time I hijack a thread, for awhile anyway. (actually I got to pull a trumpian on that one and say I’ll get back to you in the distant future with an obscure statement).

A couple of peeps have commented that the data is meaningless because not enough of the population has been tested. I agree except the meaningless remark. Yes if everyone were to be tested today the death rate would almost disappear because most of the world’s population aren’t even sick (yet?).

At the same time it is logical to assume that as testing is expanded to include people with mild symptoms or none at all the number of infected would go up with numbers that aren’t likely to die. One column goes up, the other stays the same and the rate would come down and by now that should have kicked in. But that’s not happening, and all I am doing is charting a graph of the actual death rate for a specific point in time to try and understand what direction things are going. This is easily done via a coronavirus dashboard….percentage dead to infected.

The two prime examples of concern are South Korea and Germany, the two countries with sizable populations that have done more testing of asymptomatic and mild cases than anyone else, and especially Germany that went from testing 10,000 a day to 500,000 a day in no time. The death rate should be going down. Instead they have both doubled their rates (or Germany is close). A month ago the rate in South Korea was .9 and today 2.01. And concerning lag time, SK spiked last week in Feb and first week in March. Since then they have been doing the best of anyone with numbers infected per day way down. If lag time mattered, along with increased testing, their death rate should be dropping out significantly. But more than doubling? No, there’s something wrong there.

And it doesn’t matter how big the number of the rate is or it’s relation to the final death rate. The only concern is it’s relation to previous rates.

Anyway that’s all I’m trying to do. Whether it means anything I don’t have a clue.

The reported death rate variability could be due to variations in testing rate ratios, coroner tests or lack thereof, total testing capacity, and then finally increased deaths due to an overwhelmed system. Overall baseline health of a study group must factor in as well.

I read today about an preliminary study suggesting possible susceptibility
differences based on peoples’ blood type.
I don’t know how much that varies by country.
Also that this new virus might be a chimera… Two sars viruses morphed into one…
Yikes…
Evolution meets Creation and it’s on.
I always believed in both.
Reminds me of the anti-evolutionist gent who was quite sure he “didn’t come from no monkey, see”.
I thought to myself, that’s the beauty of evolution, it could have been the other way around…

Whoops. Just read my post and realized big mistake. Germany is now testing 500,000 a week not in a day. My bad.

Sounds confusing to me.

“It is imperative that the spread happens gradually so that the health care system is *able* to provide quality care for everyone and is never overwhelmed”

Now I feel better.

Good one!
But, you didn’t not forget a comma after negative.
Maybe I didn’t understand. It’s possible that it meant:

“It’s imperative that the spread happens gradually so that the health care system, unable to provide quality care for everyone, is never overwhelmed”
Sounds about right.
Except for the fact that the health care system was often overwhelmed before this pandemic.

I will be interesting to find out how many other infectious diseases are being reduced by the social isolation.

Plus, fewer people will be dying from chemtrails because of all the aircraft that have been grounded.

If it has been four days without a positive test in Humboldt, and there has been about 50 tests per day, at what point would the disaster be declared over? November 4, perhaps? I realise the social distancing is working, but my kids are driving me crazy, and I would really like to sit down to a nice lunch in town and relax over a cold beer. A cold Corona perhaps?

Happy Easter everyone.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!!

I didn’t mind this self isolation at first, and saw it as understandable. But now that we have enough information on this, can’t people just start taking some E-mergen-C, Airborne, or any multivitamin that contains zinc and C, wash their hands and just get on with their lives?!?! It’s beginning to worry me how much we are losing our rights little by little, for longer and longer over a common cold or flu! If your fearful stay home. Or just get helathy, take vitamins, get some sunshine ( although they are trying to take that away from us as well) and LIVE ON! LIFE TO THE FULLEST!!!! It seems as though it’s time to fly the coop! Cival unrest will soon be upon us. Especially as more people realize what a scam this is! Give me liberty or give me death! I’ll take my chances, now let me out!!!

You’re wrong- this shit is real. It thickens your lungs and may cause permanent damage. Lungs are very fragile. I’m youngish and healthy but I sure as hell don’t want to get some unknown Chinese lung disease, and id appreciate it if uninformed people like you stay far from me.

Staying indoors is good. Practice social distancing. This is good. Obey.

Don’t be like the others in Red States.

I try to be brave, and go out without a mask, but then I get skeered, and run home, submerge myself in the bath tub full of hand sanitizer, and breathe through a straw, with a face mask wrapped around it, only coming out to spray fresh Lysol on the face mask.

After a few hours, my heart usually stops beating so wildly, and I can climb out, wipe most of the hand sanitizer off (not all of it! I’m not that brave!), and be ready to face the world again.

I envy all you stalwart souls willing to go out in nothing but useless cloth, and paper, masks that have no better chance of stopping a virus than a mosquito of stopping a train.

Kudos to you all!

I haven’t celebrated Easter for thirty-two years, since my wife chose that day to inform me she wanted a divorce.

However, on this day of observance of resurrection, how about we reflect on the situation we find ourselves in.

A couple of days ago, my mother, sick in the hospital, alone, no family allowed to be by her side.

Church-goers surveilled on Easter Sunday, their license numbers recorded, presumably so that law enforcement can come to their doors, and force them into quarantine — even though none of them may be ill.

People ratting out their neighbors, for doing such simple things as having a conversation in public.

People losing everything they’ve worked, hoped, and dreamed for, when their businesses are shut down for being, “non-essential.”

People being stopped on the street for simply going about their business, or being arrested for paddle-boarding in the ocean, all by themselves.

The stories are coming out: over-inflated numbers of deaths in Italy. A baby born 22 weeks early, in Louisiana, whose death is listed a “Covid death,” even though he didn’t test positive for Covid (his mother did), and he was born, well, 22 weeks early.

Officials admitting that the virus likely passed through California five months ago, leaving behind nothing but a broad swath of immunity, yet still insisting that we are in a, “crisis,” and pushing for mass vaccinations.

People wearing paper, and cloth, masks, even within the privacy of their own vehicle, driving down the road, alone, with the windows up, convinced by the media that they will protect them in some way, from some invisible danger floating around in the air, not realizing that those masks have no better chance of stopping a virus, than a mosquito has of stopping a train.

Does it seem unreal?

Does it seem insane?

On this day of resurrection, I propose that we resurrect sanity. Turn off your TV. Quit scrolling memes. Get your face out of your phone, or use it to call someone you know who is not fazed by this mis-information campaign we’ve been subjected to.

For, as much as the media, and the government, would like you to believe it, the emperor has no clothes.

We’ve been sold a bill of goods, manipulated, and coerced, into voluntarily doing more damage to ourselves than any real disaster could have done.

Today I will celebrate Easter for the first time in thirty-two years, but I will celebrate it as the resurrection of hope, and reason, and logic, and sanity.

Won’t you join me?

This virus has been here for awhile. Remember how we had a surprisingly bad flu season last year? Knocked out about 600,000 people world wide. I had a few friends that got a pretty bad case of pneumonia back in November. Stanford University is doing a study on herd immunity on covid-19 and are starting to find out that its been here for awhile. Anyway, this virus pails in comparison with the flu so far and will probably burn out. Remember this thing has to have a death toll of at least 250,000 people to be on par with the flu. We are no where near that yet. Another bogus ploy to take your rights. Anyone notice how the media is literally saying the same exact thing, word for word, about people spreading information or misinformation on social media platforms? That it threatens our democracy and must be stopped? Its called the 1st amendment. Fines for violating a BS shelter in place order up to $1000? Totally illegal and in violation of our civil rights! Remember that those who would trade freedom for safety deserve neither freedom or safety! I think Ben Franklin said that one. Anyway, enjoy hiding. I’m going to go live and flip the gov’t the bird while I lick some door knobs.

If I were his age I would be singing a different tune. Then again, once you get up there, the flu could kill ya anyway. I’m young, healthy, exercise daily, am ailment free, don’t do drugs or drink, work outside, and eat right. Plus I’m pretty clean and have always washed my hands anyway. Haven’t been sick in years. My wife got pretty sick this past week, I didn’t get sick. Maybe its cause I eat 6 cloves of raw garlic a day. Anyway, not worried.
