County Property Taxes Due Soon, Please Remember These Support Vital Services
While Humboldt County property taxes are due April 10, the Tax Collector’s Office assures everyone that they have a history of working with those who are struggling. However, they ask everyone to remember that we all rely on the services financed by tax revenues and this is one way we can all help.
Here’s the entire press release from the County of Humboldt:
The Penalty waiver process will begin after April 10 for COVID-19 related hardships
California County Treasurer – Tax Collectors are responsible for protecting the financial viability of county agencies, schools and essential services by meeting near- and long-term financial obligations. The services counties provide to local residents are dependent on the twice-yearly remittance of local property taxes.
County Tax Collectors have a long history of working with taxpayers in times of emergency, disaster and individual hardships, including during recent wildfires and floods. The COVID-19 crisis is no exception. After April 10, Tax Collectors will begin the process of waiving late payment penalties based on reasonable cause and individual circumstances including illness or quarantine as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.
Unlike income taxes which are paid on an ongoing basis through payroll deductions, property taxes are received in the days before the two payment deadlines of December 10 and April 10. These deadlines are set in state law and must be adhered to in order to avoid catastrophic impact on local funding of county public health departments, public hospitals and health systems, school districts, and general funds that pay for public safety and public works.
“At times like these we all need to help each other and therefore we urge everyone who is in a position to pay property taxes on time to do so, as required by state law. Humboldt County citizens rely on services provided by teachers, fire fighters, public health and safety officers, and other county services. Property tax revenues are vital to keeping their agencies, departments, and schools funded and services uninterrupted,” said Humboldt County Treasurer-Tax Collector John Bartholomew.
“As always, we will work with taxpayers who are facing hardships as a result of this crisis while continuing to protect the stability of our county finances and services.”
After April 10, 2020 information on applying for penalty waivers will be posted at: https://humboldtgov.org/2088/Property-Tax-Information

Sure seems like the county could be able to extrapolate that income is also crucial to property owners , in order to pay property taxes. But they took away the Mom&Pops ability to be self- sufficient & stay afloat. Shameful. We love our beautiful Humboldt, and to be able to legally create a 10-20 lb garden wld keep things humming along…especially in this crisis!
I say we all just don’t pay our property tax during these troublingly times. To give the county government a taste of their own medicine
They can take your house, or even allot of houses, but they can’t take any if they have to take them all. But you can’t ever get people on the same page. The government is the only thing that is allowed to fail and is rewarded by being allowed to expand.
Humboldt County: “We shut down your businesses. We put you out of work. Anyone left that can pay?” Haha get fucked.
Almost everyone’s business and means of income is shut down but pay your property taxes. Then Supervisor Fennell talks about giving county employees overtime.
Ya those people who gave themselves a raise BOS should be the first to forfeit the increase in their pay all they have done is Shovel hardship on small mom N pops And total disregard for all others In My opinion they have a choice here lets see what they do? These are hard times now , i think 85 k is easily enuff
I agree, the BOS need to lower there pay, what type of job allows you to vote to get a raise.
These criminals did nothing but put people out of work and are only posting this notice because they know this is the year and we are in the crisis necessary for the majority of the county to simply not pay the property taxes! Any why should we, this county is full of criminals and i say we all stop paying out property taxes!
I don’t believe they give a s*#t about us local citizens! I am immuno-compromised and have been sheltered-in-place for 3 weeks. And taking care of my sister who is way more compromised. So no income…also not getting paid for work done the 2 months before that as those people are unable to pay- one is stuck in Thailand, the other unreachable right now- hey things are hectic. So both of my sources of paying my bill are failing- for now. I am in 5 year payment plan as I had serious medical issues years ago and flailed. Anyways…i recovered and have been paying on time for last 3 years- even with that wonderful 23% interest + fees the county lovingly put on my bill.
I called tax collector last week to explain my dilemma- should I pay current and can I get deferment on the other…or vice versa? I have some $$ and yes- interest will accrue but PLEASE do not default my payment plan and cause my home to be auctioned off in June? Spoke today with Shannon in the office and she told me – NO. I must pay it all by April 10. I do not get to make current years payment even a day late. She said I had all year to pay up!! And NO- NO EXCUSE can be made and There is no appeal process of any kind! I am looking at filing a lawsuit, if possible. This is insane! They are NOT compassionate or understanding. DO NOT believe anything they say in these public relation press releases. The stress level in my home is pinned in the red…I have nothing good to say about our county office. In such a national crisis like this they have given me no way to explain or make good – they are ready to just take my home/ entire life savings out from under me? …THAT is how you take regular local folk and make them your enemy.
File a lawsuit, that will at least put the attention where it needs to be. The judge can put a stay, given the current economic climate.
You must find the best way to publicize this part of the tragedy to others.
Put a human face to it.
??Hmmmmmm this shouldn’t be a thinker. Like one of you already said there taking your property and some of yours livelihood. Here lately I’ve been accused of being a troll off of highway 36,in the same grey use to accuse me in the darkroom of beingsaid a troll from the river bars by the bridge in Ferndale, when for the last three years I’ve actually been trying to promote Fortuna, were I live, my grow is in a cavern east of Fortuna and a 1/4 mile deep, can’t be seen by? . All this being said your elected officials do not have your best interests to heart.?
so what you are saying is… its so easy a caveman can do it?
Humboldt County is determined to destroy the small mom and pops cannabis cultivators while they welcome big money cannabis companies with enormous patches. They welcome the corporate model while destroying the small cannabis entrepreneur. Most County employees are nothing but rank and file career parasites who leech off our County Payrolls much like a higher class social welfare recipient. Northern Humboldt has no business meddling in the affairs of Southern Humboldt County. Northern Mendocino and Southern Humboldt should look at forming their own County and having jurisdiction over them selves rather than Ukiah and Eureka dictating and ruling and lording over the citizens. The culture of Urban Humboldt and Mendocino have no reflection of the rural landscape. Time to form our own county! To hell with Eureka and Ukiah!
FORCE MAJEURE!
TAX REVOLT anyone? It wld be great to hold up on taxes till they let up on the smallest farmers getting a permit for a 20 lb garden!!! Flood them with email requests, or apply for county aid en mass?
Tax revolt? How about a tax refund since over half of property taxes are supposed to go to schools and the schools are closed.
Teachers are still preparing curriculum and teaching online, insurance payments are still needing to be made, etc.
So the teachers are the fortunate ones for once? They are always asking for raises and help, well now the shoe is on the other foot. We are all suffering economically, will they just do it for the love of the children?
Fortunate because they are getting paid for their work? Dang…I’d like to see you donate this year’s crop to those low wage employees across California that lost their jobs.
I understand that teachers have a cost of living, that’s understandable. So do I. But shouldn’t at least whatever operating costs are being saved by schools being closed be refunded to the taxpayer? But that’s not how our government operates. They take more, never less.
And the extra money it takes to prepare for the pandemic…? Should we get charged extra for that? I have a feeling that the money saved vs the extra money being spent would not work out well for those paying the property tax.
Do you honestly think you aren’t being charged for the money the government is spending? Who’s paying it then Mexico? The government doesn’t have money, it’s my money and your money. Every dollar spent by the government is from my, and your pocketbook. Or your grandchildren’s, that’s how debt, social security, and unfounded pension liability work. My point is that you have to keep paying every tax despite what they do with it and they’ll still charge you another tax to make up for it. So yeah, it’s not going to work out well for the people who pay property tax because we’re paying for all of it just like you are.
what extra money? are you talking about medical supplies? and no the teachers are not having to prepare curriculum (well not all of them), they are using curriculum from premade online school work blah blah blah. i dont think they even have to grade papers anymore. and a lot of the workers that do other things at school dont have to do them either. what you could argue is that the schools are going to pay everyone full pay even though they dont have to do their jobs right now because… fill in the blank
First there’s loss of sales tax–all those shuttered businesses aren’t selling items and providing sales tax to Humboldt County, then there’s providing extra equipment (Today SoHum got a shipment of PPE’s) County workers are probably putting in overtime, installing infrastructure such as that for teleconferencing, screenings for those needing it such as those going into jail, tracing those who came into contact with COVID-19 patients, costs of distributing meals to students (Will ADA money come in from the state?)…the levels of disinfectant used alone must be astronomical. And that’s just what comes off the top of my head.
what does that have to do with property tax?
You asked about the cost to the county for the pandemic. I explained that their income is down and their expenses are up.
It does as long as cannabis remains an essential occupation/medicine. My guess is at moment it not property taxes covering majority of this, but the cannabis industry. Now I understand it has many medicinal values, however to be promoting a sacred herb w massive taxes on it to a population that has no income is literally taking the last resources one has by supplying for exorbitant rate..funny only office fully functioning in eureka is tax treasury, and expects people w isolation orders to drive to eureka to pay last resources saved with no sign of future income for the sake of an emergency that should be covered on a federal level. They’re shut down. Couldn’t even get a child that was kept from you while you have custody returned to proper family, but pay your taxes? Crazy world for sure
Teachers have to follow a pre designed curriculum that fits the status quo.
Teachers that I know are designing curriculum.
Your very own Humboldt County Government’s response to life and death emergency:
“There’s only two things sure in life, death and taxes. Pay up.”
Everybody’s broke=money trap even before the shutdown. And stay away from 5G if you want to live through CV! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28eV6tcboUc
What fucking chutzpah. Any more fucking reminders county?
This sure sounds like a threat. Thank you Humboldt.
I’m not even a flag waver, but this is outrageous. Will a single county supervisor come forward to say such a demand is inhumane at this time? If we’re to take anything seriously about a global viral outbreak and our own government demanding everybody stay home all day as a matter of life or death, then to demand large sums of money from our own residents in return is disgusting behavior.
It’s more than within the powers of our county officials, all of them in every department, to join together and petition the state and federal government demanding exemption. Every county supervisor will still get $10,000 each this month and next. They are all afraid to rock the boat and talk back to “our” representatives in state and federal government, because they’re living high on the hog without a worry in the world about their own finances.
Property taxes = theft
Property = theft
Interesting to see how the HC Tax collector’s press releases went from a threatening tone one week ago, to a pleading tone today. The previous post definitely rattled a few cages.
I am still offended, but I plan on paying my taxes.
https://kymkemp.com/2020/03/19/county-says-you-can-only-pay-your-property-taxes-online-the-office-is-closed/
i also was offended
You have 5 years to pay before your property goes to auction. In 5 years, the taxes due MAY BE WORTH MORE THAN THE PROPERTY.
Teachers are greatly underappreciated and even more under paid. You have to pay to get your degree to help others but a LEO can kill or detain with nothing more than a jock like attitude. Kind of messed up
This is what governments do. This is what you should expect. For those of you who want more government, yet are on here complaining, you should STFU.
Office is closed, all payments must be online with an added charge due to third party fees. E-checks cost the taxpayer. Without the option of paying in person, the tax is de facto more than it should be. That’s illegal, and since it can’t be helped at the moment, all tax collection should be officially postponed indefinitely.
We’re getting relief from mortgage payments, a check from the stimulus so we can eat, evictions are null and void for now,the state and federal government is trying to be supportive as we are all of a sudden unemployment by the millions but good old slimy Humboldt county wants your stimulus check !!! There like the slimeballs that steal old folks social security checks!!!! Sure hope we have a stronger turnout in registered voters in this runoff between fentanyl and Michelle
Can’t use your own constitutional riparian water, cant grow your own vegetables, cant do anything with your property in Humboldt anymore except get harrassed and extorted.but hey make sure you give us money for trampling all over your freedom and democracy, hurry up about it to we want our money before half of you die from the pandemic!!!!!
