Law Enforcement Officers, Some Wearing Masks, in Rio Dell, According to Witness

A reader sends us these photos. She tells us, “Multiple agency cars on the 300 block of First Ave Rio Dell including plain clothes with black face masks.” This occurred about 12:45 p.m. today. She followed this up by stating, “Cars are all Humboldt sheriff now. Several people in black masks.” [Later information, see here, indicates there were multiple agencies involved.]

I think that you’re correct.

It becomes increasingly difficult to carryout surveillance operations and drug stings (or outright entrapment missions) when an officer’s identity is known up front, not to suggest that any Humboldt County law enforcement official would ever engage in any questionable or amoral behavior.

This is, however, the first time that I’ve heard of local law enforcement agencies hiding their faces. This seems to work against the notion that one has the right to confront their accusers, not to say that the police ever wish to be placed in a position that would place their character, authority or motivation in question.

what’s with the masks……will the usual suspects rant about how dishonest they are for not using their real names and becoming anonymous?
