Two Major Injury Crashes Reported Early Sunday Along Highway 299 Corridor

Police lights at night featureTwo separate major injury crashes were reported within hours of each other early Sunday morning along the Highway 299 corridor between the Highway 101 interchange in Arcata and an area east of Blue Lake, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page.

The first crash was reported around 2:30 a.m. near the northbound Highway 101 and eastbound Highway 299 interchange in Arcata. Initial callers reported a vehicle had gone over the side of the roadway with an occupant still inside.

The roadway was closed for a time. Emergency responders from multiple agencies, including Arcata Police Department, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Caltrans, and CHP, responded to the scene.

CHP logs indicate the crash caused approximately 30 feet of guardrail damage. By about 4:12 a.m., the injured person had reportedly been transported to St. Joseph Hospital in stable condition with a major scalp laceration while awaiting additional scans. The roadway reopened shortly before 6 a.m.

At 7:11 a.m., CHP reported this was a major injury crash.

Less than three hours after the first crash, at approximately 5:45 a.m., another crash was reported farther east on Highway 299 near mile marker 8.80, east of Blue Lake.

Initial reports indicated a vehicle was off the roadway in the grass. CHP logs later described a Honda CR-V overturned on its side approximately 150 feet off the roadway with major damage.

One party involved reportedly told dispatchers they had a broken leg connected to the crash.

CHP reports this as a major injury traffic collision.

The circumstances surrounding both crashes remain under investigation. Initial reports are subject to change as more information becomes available. We’ve reached out to CHP Humboldt but no one was available to answer our questions.

My husband and I passed the second crash around 8am. There was a tow truck getting the car up from the cliff on the eastbound side. A couple of police cars were there as well. They must’ve already gotten the ppl out because there was no ambulance.

We were on the westbound side, so weren’t able to see the car. It was pretty far down a cliff/hill. Just saw the tow truck trying to get a tow hook down to the car.
