Two Humboldt Residents Detained as Israeli Military Intercepts Global Sumud Flotilla — Again

The phone call never came.

Silas Beaver had reached out just 24 hours before we believe he was captured by the Israeli military on May 18, as we tried to coordinate a long-distance interview. “Hey …let’s do something asap,” he wrote on May 17, as the sailboat the Humboldt County resident was on sailed toward Gaza’s territorial waters. “We’re getting to the point where we could be scooped up anytime. Again.”

Now Silas Beaver is in Israeli custody – his location and condition unknown.

But he’s not alone. Somewhere within the group of over 400 of civilian volunteers taken from 50 different vessels caught in the Israeli Navy’s flotilla dragnet through international waters, is another Humboldt County man– Greg Terry, of Arcata.

A Second Interception in International Waters

In the early hours of Monday, May 18, the Israeli military surrounded the Global Sumud Flotilla approximately 250 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza in international waters, far beyond any legal jurisdiction to intercept civilian vessels.

Screengrab of a live recording replay shows several Israeli soldiers boarding the sailboat with long guns. Video of various interceptions at sea can be found at the Global Sumud Flotilla website.

The fully armed soldiers began boarding boats and detaining participants. According to the Global Sumud Flotilla, over 400 delegates have been abducted from 50 flotilla vessels. News outlets report they are being transported to a prison in the Israeli port of Ashdod.

Both Humboldt County residents currently sailing — Silas Beaver and Greg Terry — are among those detained.

Pre-recorded SOS videos from both men, made in anticipation of exactly this scenario, have been posted to the flotilla’s website Greg Terry’s SOS video | Silas Beaver’s SOS video.

Silas Beaver was among those detained in April. After his release, he rejoined the flotilla in Turkey and continued toward Gaza. Greg Terry had avoided the first interception entirely — only to be caught in this second one.

Four Humboldt residents originally set sail on the mission: brothers Windfield and Silas Beaver, Greg Terry, and Sacha Marini.

Windfield Beaver has since returned to California. Marini, undeterred after the first interception, wrote at the time that “now is the time to mobilize… to shine a spotlight on what has happened… and keep our focus on the people of Palestine… to support them in their struggle for dignified humanity and land sovereignty.” According to the May 18 press release, Marini is currently stationed in Cyprus, doing ground support and working to repair damaged flotilla vessels.

Trump’s State Dept. Implicates Flotilla Organizers in Hamas Networks

Today on May 19, the U.S. State Department announced sanctions targeting what it described as “organizers of a Hamas-backed flotilla attempting to reach Gaza.” The action was part of broader counterterrorism measures directed at organizations and individuals the administration alleges support Hamas and affiliated groups.

Image of a Global Sumud Flotilla sailboat with the sun setting in the distance, over Mediterranean seas. [Image provided by GSF.]

“Today, the United States is taking decisive action to target the international networks that enable Hamas to sustain its terrorist operations, expand political influence, and undermine efforts to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.  Today’s designations target three categories of Hamas enablers: organizers of a Hamas-backed flotilla attempting to reach Gaza; operatives within Hamas-aligned Muslim Brotherhood networks that facilitate violent terrorist attacks; and coordinators of Samidoun, a front organization for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).”

In addition, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent stated in a treasury press release, “The pro-terror flotilla attempting to reach Gaza is a ludicrous attempt to undermine President Trump’s successful progress toward lasting peace in the region.”

Second Open Sea Interception

This is not the first time Israeli forces have boarded these vessels. In late April, the military intercepted the flotilla near Greece — more than 600 miles from Gaza’s shores. At that time, twenty-two boats were boarded and over 170 people reportedly detained by the State of Israel. The GSF press release states that during that detention, some delegates were subjected to physical abuse, sexual assault, and torture.

From the April interception, the vast majority of detained activists were deported to Greek shores. But two were held significantly longer. Saif Abukeshek of Spain and Thiago Ávila of Brazil were held without charges in an Israeli prison following the April raid.  The UN human rights office called on Israel to immediately release both men, warning that attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza “is not a crime,” according to the UN.  Both were ultimately released from Ashkelon’s Shikma detention facility and deported — after which Abukeshek announced the flotilla would sail again from Turkey.

A photo provided by the Flotilla Press team delivers a message to Israeli soldiers expected to board.

In addition to the four Sumud sailors from Humboldt, there is at least one additional Second District constituent – Gabe Korty from Point Reyes – according to KQED.

A sixth Californian, Chad Ashby from Topanga (District Three), is also noted as a support person sailing with the GSF.  At this time, we have not confirmed the status of Korty or Ashby, as a result of today’s flotilla developments.

“They Must Do Their Duty”

Greg Terry’s partner, Tossa Hayward, released a statement directed to their California elected representatives, saying, “We are so proud of Greg for following his convictions even knowing the violence and impunity of the IOF.” [Instead of referring to the Israeli military by their designated moniker the “Israeli Defense Forces (IDF)”, many pro-Palestine activists prefer the modified acronym “IOF” which unofficially stands for “Israeli Offense Forces”.]

Adding, “We also want to express our frustration and disappointment with Representative Huffman and Senators Padilla and Schiff,” Hayward explained, “for neglecting to advocate publicly for the safe passage of the flotilla, despite our numerous calls for them to do so.”

“With the news that Greg has indeed been abducted by the IOF, we expect and demand that they do their duty as his representatives — to advocate for his release and to publicly condemn Israel for its illegal abduction of civilians,” Hayward stated in the official press release related to Humboldt constituents Terry and Beaver.

However, Representative Huffman’s office just released in response to our questions this statement,

Three of my constituents from the Spring 2026 Global Sumud Flotilla have reportedly been detained by the Israeli navy in international waters while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. I’m calling on Secretary Rubio and the State Department to ensure their safety and fair treatment. The U.S. has an obligation to protect Americans abroad, and my team and I are working to safely get them home.

Families and supporters of the detained residents are asking the public to contact Rep. Huffman and Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff directly, urging them to advocate for the safe return of their constituents and to uphold international and maritime law protecting civilian humanitarian missions.

As the flotilla pressed on, livestreaming cameras aboard each vessel brought viewers onboard.

The Global Sumud Flotilla initial statement following the most recent incursion on the humanitarian flotilla called the actions illegal, writing, “By intercepting the flotilla at a perimeter of 250 nautical miles today and in Cyprus’ SAR zone, the israeli regime continues to demonstrate a systematic disregard for international maritime law, freedom of navigation on the high seas, and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).”

Judy Beaver, the mother of Windfield and Silas Beaver, said she has been waiting for news about Silas’ whereabouts. She compared the Gaza flotilla effort to past struggles that “have been hard and long,” including “the revolutionary war, women’s suffrage, [and] a 10 yr effort for civil rights which included going up against power of the day… .” She said, “Doing nothing is what allows evil to be powerful.” Then she said that the Flotilla action is “worth it and those willing to put themselves on the line are brave and selfless and deserve our honor.”

To follow the remaining Flotilla boats, the real time tracker and live footage shows which ships are remaining, and where they are along the route to Gaza. You can also view additional SOS videos by other Flotilla Participants.

It is one sided. Hamas is to blame for all of this along with Iran who is dedicated to anihilating all Christians including Americans….you and me. Hamas is happy to use Palestinians as human shields especially hospitals and schools. This results in massive collateral death and destruction in this conflict. Palestinians are the victims of Hamas as much as Israelis.

There’s rules, and there are rules people decide follow or ignore. If people can hide in the hills of Humboldt and get away with murder, what makes you think at least a few people on the high seas aren’t doing the same? Piracy is still a thing in some parts of the world. They just have a lot better tech and ships now.

Shooting at unarmed protesters in international waters by Israeli forces starts at 0:19 minute mark…

https://youtu.be/84yChevNUSk?si=C4uGQNPbQAi3UoLb

The thing that looks like a yellow blob of fat which appears to be floating in the water is an optical illusion…

It’s actually a projectile ricocheting after striking very near to an unarmed protester…

Firing projectiles and ricochets continue after protesters hands are clearly raised…

The orange life preserver hanging between the Israeli gunman and the protester filming can be seen getting hit at least twice…

No warnings can be heard before shots commence being fired by Israeli forces…..

And do what? It doesn’t look like they achieved much of anything other than some YouTube videos and make noise in the media. When they can overpower a single warship–from anybody–let me know. Israel isn’t going to change their stance on things. They didn’t when Moses convinced the Pharoah of Egypt to let them go and settle in that land, according to various books and accounts, to any enemy of their state since, and it won’t happen in the future. Keep in mind you have two or more factions that will fight until one of them is dead. You and your flotilla parties are just cannon fodder to them. Or minor irritation. If I were a Palestinian, I’d relocate. F- all that noise. Have your tiny, crappy piece of dirt, I’m out.

It would be funny if these boats were allowed to sail into Gaza. On landing they would be greeted by Hamas and have all their supplies taken away for “redistribution”. Any women with uncovered heads would be arrested. The guys might be ransomed back to their families but in any case they would sure get a good look at Hamas policies! Ha Ha Ha!! Okay- maybe not funny but eye-opening for sure…Don’t stop them- Let them go in there- Make them stay- and then make them write about their wonderful experiences as unclean infidels with Hamas…

NEWS AND FEATURES“…???

Why wouldn’t this article be properly categorized in the “CRIME” section…???

Either it was a crime committed by the 400 sailors that were arrested and imprisoned…

…or it was a crime committed by Israeli forces when Israeli forces arrested and imprisoned 400 sailors in international waters without authority, jurisdiction, or justification…

It was a crime, one way, or another, that’s for damn sure…

So, why has Redheaded Blackbelt elected to categorize this action as merely “News and Features”…???

Professional courtesy…???

FFS, 400 mariners navigating in international waters were arrested and taken captive by Israeli forces 250 nautical miles offshore of Israel and then all of them were subsequently imprisoned in Israel…

Is Redheaded Blackbelt just trying to play this off like, one way or another, no crime was committed…???

Either the 400 protesters were arrested and imprisoned because an alleged crime was committed…

Or Israel has committed a massive crime by arresting and imprisoning 400 otherwise innocent mariners and confiscating all of their vessels and property in international waters with neither the proper authority nor the legal jurisdiction or justification to have done so…!!!

So, why has Redheaded Blackbelt journalism non committedly taken such a neutral stance, as if no crime was committed…???

FFS Redheaded Blackbelt categorized the Humboldt County Republican Party denouncing Charlie Kirk’s murder under the crime section…

Israel arrested 400 people in international waters and then imprisoned those 400 people 250 nautical miles away in Israel and confiscated 50 vessels in the process..

With or without charge…

A crime was committed no matter how you slice it, especially if no crime was committed by the 400 mariners…

So, why isn’t this article properly categorized under “Crime”…

Political correctness…???

Israeli forces arresting 400 innocent mariners with impunity in international waters and subjecting them to indefinite captivity without legal authority, proper jurisdiction, nor reasonable justification is piratical and atrocious…

How is that not criminal…???

It’s a crime against humanity, FFS…!!!

It’s barbaric…

How is it true journalism to play this off as if it wasn’t a crime, but just simply, “News and Features”…???

It’s a crime, FFS, either way, isn’t it…???

Let’s not kid ourselves…

I’m sick of all the bullshit playing off Israel continuously commiting habitual heinous unchecked human rights violations and treating non Israelis like dogs, as if it was perfectly acceptable, perfectly natural, and perfectly legal…

File this article under Crime, where it belongs, one way or another…

Why pretend a crime has not been committed, at all…???

I don’t get it…

Why sugarcoat it…???

Oh, for fuck’s sake—Humboldt’s finest “peace warriors” are at it again. Silas Beaver (serial offender) and Greg Terry, detained once more as Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla—a Hamas-adjacent propaganda stunt dressed up as “humanitarian aid.” These clowns aren’t delivering baby formula; they’re LARPing as revolutionaries while sailing under the banner of networks with documented ties to a U.S.-designated terrorist organization.

Let’s call this what it is: useful idiocy (at best) or active material support (at worst) for terrorists. The flotilla isn’t some grassroots sailboat parade—it’s backed by organizers with direct links to Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood fronts, and groups like the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad. U.S. sanctions, Treasury actions, and Israeli intelligence have laid it out plainly: this is a political op to legitimize Hamas, smear Israel’s security measures, and funnel attention away from the jihadists who started the war, embed among civilians, and steal aid for tunnels and rockets.881e8e
And these Humboldt locals? They’re not lone wolves. They’re steeped in the same local radical scene that churns out “No Kings” rallies, anti-ICE spectacles, and endless pro-Palestine marches on campus and at the courthouse. Same crowd, same signs, same reflexive alignment with any cause that paints America and Israel as the villains while giving a free pass to actual terrorists who chant “from the river to the sea.” It’s the classic counter-culture cosplay: stick it to “the Man” by cheering on (or enabling) the worst theocrats and butchers on the planet.

Wake up, Humboldt. Your “activists” aren’t misunderstood idealists anymore—they’re now squarely in the crosshairs of federal scrutiny for ties to Hamas-linked operations. DHS, Treasury, and the new administration aren’t playing games with terror-adjacent stupidity. Playing victim after getting boarded (again), releasing the scripted SOS videos, and running to local Dem reps for rescue doesn’t make you noble—it makes you embarrassments who chose performative theater over real charity that doesn’t launder support for October 7 glorifiers.

Enough with the flotilla fan-fiction. Stop toeing the line for designated terrorists, stop dragging your community into this garbage, and try actual non-jihad-linked help for once. Your “resistance” is transparent, tired, and now officially radioactive. The mask is off—you’re not peace activists; you’re terrorist sympathizers getting exactly the attention you deserve.

I noted that they were detained in “international waters”, supposedly out of Israel’s jurisdiction.

orange is waging a war without the authorization of Congress.

The civil rules that have been in place no longer apply. They are not being honored.

The idea of international waters would seem to go back to naval wars, centuries ago. Times when the, then, military industrial complex of the time ran the wars and set the rules…

Israel is ignoring all the rules.

Supposedly, they have a concept that several of the countries that border them are rightfully theirs, thus they are invading and bombing them.

It is not unlike the Nationalist Zionists in the 1930’s, aka Nazi Party, that invaded Europe.

Our US government, instead of sending troops to defend these countries that are being invaded, are actually sending our food money and healthcare money to the invaders…

Our local Congressman and our US Senators voted to send BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to these horrible people. They have blood on their hands.

Something ain’t adding up…

RHBB headline states…

“TWO HUMBOLDT RESIDENTS DETAINED…”

But the. RHBB article’s text states…

“News outlets report they are being transported to a prison in the Israeli port of Ashford.”

So they weren’t just “DETAINED”, they were arrested by Israeli forces in international waters, taken into Israeli custody, and from international waters, then taken to an Israeli prison…

This is more of a mass kidnapping, and ” “wholesale” hostage situation, than it is a mere “DETENTION”…!!!

So why the glaring contradictions in proper legal terms and actual definitions…???

These people were forcefully taken captive by Israelis, and are being held against their will in prison, without legitimate charges or criminal offense…

“TWO HUMBOLDT RESIDENTS ABDUCTED AND IMPRISONED AS ISRAELI MILITARY INTERCEPTS GLOBAL SUMUD FLOTILLA — AGAIN”

There, fixed it…

This is the United Stares of America, last I checked…

So…

Why would RHBB be using Israel’s definition of “detention”, in it’s usage, and not using the United States definition of “detention”, in it’s usage….???

Deference to Israel…???

(May I object, your honor, on the grounds upon which I am standing…???)

Where is the outrage..???

In the United States, putting someone captured in international waters in prison indefinitely, 250 nautical miles away in Israel, is NOT the definition of “detention”…

It’s “abduction” and “imprisonment”…

___________________________________

“What does detention mean in Israel?”

“In Israel, “detention” generally falls into two primary legal categories: short-term investigatory police detention and indefinite administrative detention.

1. Criminal and Investigatory Detention

Definition:

A temporary restriction of movement by police or military personnel to investigate a suspected crime, verify identity, or conduct searches.

Duration: In civilian law, suspects can typically be held for 24 to 48 hours before being brought before a judge to request an extension.

2. Administrative Detention

Definition:

A highly controversial measure used predominantly by the Israeli military, where individuals (primarily Palestinians, but occasionally Israeli citizens or foreign nationals) are held in custody without formal criminal charges or a trial.

Process:

Detention orders are issued by the Minister of Defense or military commanders based on secret evidence that is not accessible to the detainee or their attorney.

Duration:

Detainees are held for periods of up to six months, which can be renewed indefinitely.

Human rights organizations widely criticize administrative detention, as it bypasses standard due process.

Conversely, the Israeli government views the practice as a necessary counter-terrorism and state security measure.

For further details on the legal framework, you can review the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) or the B’Tselem Administrative Detention resource.”

___________________________________

“In the United States legal system, detention is the temporary and brief restriction of a person’s freedom of movement by law enforcement or government authority. It exists to investigate suspected criminal activity, maintain order, or determine immigration status, and is legally distinct from a formal arrest.

The concept of detention operates across several specific contexts in U.S. law:

1. Investigative Detention (Criminal Law)

Also known as a Terry stop (based on the landmark Supreme Court case Terry v. Ohio), this is a brief, temporary seizure.

Standard of Proof: Police officers must have reasonable suspicion—specific, articulable facts that suggest criminal activity is afoot. A mere hunch is not enough.
Duration: The stop must only last as long as necessary to confirm or dispel the officer’s suspicions (usually a few to 20-30 minutes).
Search/Seizure Rules: Officers may perform a limited pat-down or “frisk” of the individual’s outer clothing if they have reasonable suspicion that the person is armed and dangerous.

2. Detention vs. Arrest

A detention can escalate into an arrest, but the legal thresholds and consequences differ significantly:

Arrests require probable cause (a reasonable belief based on facts that a crime has been committed) and subject the individual to formal charges and long-term incarceration.
Courts evaluate the totality of the circumstances (e.g., use of handcuffs, length of questioning, display of weapons) to determine if a detention became a de facto arrest.

3. Traffic Stops

In the context of motor vehicles, an officer may briefly detain a vehicle or its occupants to investigate a traffic violation, regardless of whether criminal activity is suspected.

4. Immigration Detention

Under U.S. immigration law (e.g., 8 USC 1226), the government may arrest and detain non-citizens pending a decision on their removal from the United States, or pending hearings. This can occur in facilities managed by agencies like U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

5. Juvenile Detention & Psychiatric Holds

Juveniles: Minors may be detained in specialized facilities if they are accused of committing an act that would be a crime if committed by an adult, typically to protect the public or the child.
Psychiatric/Medical: Individuals may be temporarily and involuntarily detained if they present a clear and present danger to themselves or others due to a mental health disorder.”
