‘Abducted’ in International Waters: North Coast Native Sailing to Gaza on Veteran’s Flotilla is Intercepted

A Humboldt County man who sailed as part of the unprecedented “global flotilla” of over 40 vessels hauling humanitarian aid on a civilian-led mission to the shores of the Gaza Strip has been reported captured by the Israeli military, just hours before the vessel was expected to reach Gaza’s waters.

Less than 100 kilometers from the shores of Gaza at daybreak, tracking data showed flotilla ships being intercepted one by one as communications from the group began to drop off. Aboard the vessel Ohwayla — which carried a 14-person crew that included nine Americans and was largely composed of military veterans — Orleans resident Windfield Moon Beaver was part of the group set on delivering food and diapers to civilians.

The anti-war veterans group About Face has posted Instagram messages for each crew member, advocating for their release.

Among the group of over 40 civilian vessels carrying more than 500 people from different nations, The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) has confirmed the ship Ohwayla was “intercepted” in international waters as it approached Gaza’s territorial seas, in the early hours of October 2, in the Mediterranean sea. As it was heading toward Gaza’s waters near the front of the flotilla group, the vessel lost connection with the tracking team late in the evening, as Windfield “Wind” Beaver sent messages to family and friends via Signal, before ultimately going into security protocol in anticipation of the Ohwayla being boarded and seized.

In his official pre-recorded SOS transmission posted to the GSF website, Windfield Beaver tells the public, “if you are watching this video, I have been kidnapped by the Israeli occupation forces and taken against my will. Tell my government to end its complicity with Israel and to bring me home. Stop the genocide.”

A screenshot capture of the flotilla tracker after radio communications were thwarted and crews were in the process of being confirmed as intercepted, data shows the Ohwayla off course after having been in the front section of the flotilla.

With communications jammed as Israeli military vessels closed in on flotilla vessels, Global Sumud Flotilla crew members aboard dropped their cell phones into the sea as part of a safety protocol initiated during anticipated interception at sea, making further communication to outside support networks even more difficult. For this reason, the whereabouts of specific crew members remains unconfirmed, possibly until flotilla participants are given the ability to contact outside diplomatic agencies to negotiate their return – as with previous incidents of flotilla ships being seized and crew members jailed or detained by the Israeli military (IDF), after being pulled from international waters.

Wind’s last message posted to Facebook indicates that he expected to be taken into custody with the rest of the veteran-run crew of the Ohwayla, on the evening of October 1st. “I have been abducted by Isr@eli forces. Take action! Call the US embassy in Isr@el and demand them to pressure the Isr@eli government to immediately release the flotilla crew,” reads the 12-hour old facebook post, at the time of this report.

We spoke with Windfield Beaver’s brother, Ben Beaver, who explained that his brother, Windfield, grew up in Forks of Salmon and later made a home in the eastern remote part of Humboldt County, in the enclave of Orleans, where he has lived for 20 years. Feeling compelled to offer his services as a mechanic to the GSF, Beaver was added to the crew of the Ohwayla – better known as the “Veterans boat” which has made news in recent weeks featuring interviews from US Veteran Gregg Stoker

Before reaching the waters surrounding Gaza, Windfield Beaver publicly posted about the mission, sharing beautiful images from the Mediterranean.

Wind’s brother, Ben Beaver, explained by phone that family and friends understood Wind’s convictions and moral compass on the issue, and were all in to support him once he had announced his intent to sail with the GSF. His brother told us, “These people, these hundreds of people on this Flotilla… knew they’re risking their lives, and they’re like, ‘no but this is a cause that we’re willing to fight for,” he said, illustrating the group’s tenacity in the face of what they recognized as near-impossible objective.

Not knowing where his brother is being held, in what conditions, or when he may get news of Wind’s safety – he added, “Many of us wait our entire lives to find a purpose or find something to fight for. These are ‘moral warriors’ who understand what it means to stand up for human rights.”

According to Ben Beaver and confirmed by media representatives from the GSF, Windfield Beaver’s last messages to a Signal group chat showed that he was aware of the risks as the Israeli military began circling vessels, applying pressure tactics like spraying vessels with what was described by some crews as “sulfur water”, flying drones overhead, and using frequency jamming technology to frustrate radio communications between vessels.

The public was invited to track the ships and to view yesterday’s live-streamed progress of the Global Sumud Flotilla as they sailed closer to Gaza’s territorial waters. At the time of this reporting, one vessel remains visible on a live feed still sailing towards Gaza – the Marinette

A press release issued by GSF yesterday as vessels were being intercepted in international waters asks supporters to contact their state officials and embassies in the State of Israel, to advocate for safe return of crew members to their respective countries. It reads in part, “This is an illegal attack on unarmed humanitarians in international waters. We call on governments, world leaders, and international institutions to demand the safety and release of all on board and continue to monitor this situation closely.”

It reads in part, “This is an illegal attack on unarmed humanitarians in international waters. We call on governments, world leaders, and international institutions to demand the safety and release of all on board and continue to monitor this situation closely.”

The last communications from his brother, Wind, spoke of the physical beauty of the journey and their sense of a moral purpose behind the flotilla’s mission to Gaza. Reflecting on the final texts, Ben Beaver told us, “A lot of his messages were basically just talking about… being escorted by dolphins and flying fish and just… sailing on the Mediterranean, and the sunrise,” before the situation grew increasingly troubling while the vessels entered the “red zone” where previous flotilla ships were seized

Ben Beaver noted that Windfield’s last communications were around 7 PM Pacific Time, and after that, they were only tracking the boat’s location. “He was fully aware and accepting that they may be intercepted and they didn’t know what their treatment was going to be,” he said Beaver. Then he added, “Knowing that he’s risking his life, he still wouldn’t have changed his decision to go on this journey and do this beautiful thing.”

He went on to say, “[T]here’s been a lot of really strong support from our Native American community. “ He drew parallels between indigenous struggles and the Palestinian experience, noting that his brother felt compelled to do whatever he could to help the grassroots humanitarian mission. He expressed admiration for his brother, telling us, “When I heard that Wind was joining the flotilla, I felt that he had been preparing his entire life for that moment and there was no place on earth that he would rather be. I am so incredibly proud of him.”

A screenshot from the video interview shows Windfield Moon Beaver aboard the Ohwayla, during an earlier phase of the humanitarian mission.

In an interview from the Ohwayla prior to being intercepted by Israeli military forces at sea, Windfield Beaver explained to Rompeviento TV that he was there to offer his help to the mission. He told the reporter, “I am a carpenter and a mechanic, and a problem solver,” saying, “I am from the United States… for many reasons, I would say primarily it is because I could not tolerate to do nothing.”  Adding that it had been increasingly difficult for him “in the past two years to watch this genocide happen.” He told them, “…We knew it was a genocide from the beginning.

He added, “… [T]o be able to do nothing, especially as a citizen of the United States, where my government is so complicit, that when… I saw the opportunity to join this flotilla and do something tangible, like with my hands, it was no question,” he explained. He added, “I feel a lot of sadness and grief and pain, but also in hope, a struggle and persistence against such a powerful adversary, and this responsibility.”

In response to the interception of the Global Samud Flotilla, several other independent flotillas and ships have launched in an effort to pick up where the world’s largest civilian flotilla in history left off. Protests in solidarity with flotilla crews have erupted in various cities around the world, including in Italy, Spain, Tunisia, Libya, New York, and France. GSF press team members urge supporters of the crew members to contact their respective government representatives, and “demand the immediate release” of each crew member. Family of Windfield Beaver also urges supporters to contact California Governor Gavin Newsom, Congressman Jared Huffman, Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla to advocate for Wind’s safety.

According to Tariq Ra’ouf, a West Coast Media Coordinator for the GSF, it is unclear for how long civilian crew members of the humanitarian mission will be held. He told us, “Israeli media is reporting no one is going to be released until after Yom Kippur,” noting, “we don’t have any official news or updates” related to the status of those detained from international waters.

The purpose of the interception was to assure hamas does not confiscate the aid. Further, it poses a safety and logistics risk to not obtain prior authorization. So this was a fools mission and those involved should have known better, although big egos and counterculture ideology clouds that ability. Now he can stew for awhile which is what he deserves.

The purpose of the interception was to ensure that Israel has complete and total control over every aspect of Palestinians’ lives.
The irony of a Jewish State calculating and controlling the number of calories allowed to be distributed to the inhabitants of a concentration camp is palpable…. and disgusting.

Isnt the argument that Israel has to intercept the aid flotillas to keep Hammas from intercepting the aid?

And practically every nation is ignoring what’s going on in Nigeria …

There is, and will always be, strife all over the planet. The question is: why are only some instances covered in media ad nauseum?

You feel like he deserves to be imprisoned for attempting to bring food to Palestine? Do you believe that intercepting the aid would be bad? as long as it’s Hammas, right?

Although these great people are trying to help, they also cause a lot of unnecessary resources to be used in protecting them. Hamas could kill everyone of them and take the bounty! This is far beyond happy minded people trying to help. Hamas has no regard for life and will kill for the fun of it!

And yet it was Israel who confiscated the “bounty” heading to feed people?
If Hammas is the one distributing food then they’re the bad guys?
Israel really thinks killing kids will make Palestinians appreciate them, and turn on Hammas? Or is “Hammas” just their safe word to repeat during ethnic cleansing?

Interesting “handle.” Poles, as a Slavic people, tend to be “white” but there is room for variety. Their knuckles tend to be white, especially now with Putin going nuts and President Trump already nuts. Or vice versa. Either way, these are grim times.

Thank you for writing this article.
Hopefully our government officials will be inspired to do something to bring home our civilian and veteran countrymen who were illegally kidnapped by Israel in international waters.

“Israeli media is reporting no one is going to be released until after Yom Kippur,” noting, “we don’t have any official news or updates.” That’s an indeterminate amount of time to remain in Israeli custody. Wind Beaver is having the experience of a lifetime.

I hope they are treated well! Israel is, after all, still a Democratic Ally. I knew a hell of a war with Hamas and Israel was on after that rape, murder of adults & babies, and kidnapping of Israelis on Oct 7 nearly two years ago. What has been happening to the many Palestinians supporting or not supporting Hamas has been painful to see…and my heart goes out to them. The timing of Hamas allowed the PM of Israel to survive and thrive! Israel was likely leaning more to the left…or at least moderate leadership at the time. But the thing is…it is a place with a complicated situation ever since the late 40s and going back thousands of years. Israeli built a country from whence they came…right or wrong depending on who you ask. hey use their superior technology and military to survive and thrive. It seems so unfair to people who have developed a strong identification and empathy for the Palestinian population there. Veterans for Peace, for the most part have long identified with their plight, and though disagreeing back in the day, I worked side by side with them for local needs in San Francisco. We can differ in our viewpoints about a situation thousands of miles away (and I have always been for a two state solution which Hamas keeps screwing up the chances for) but still care about others and work side by side. I know alot of people in the US feel pretty strongly in support of Palestinians over Israelis, and they even helped Trump get elected! Harris was made out to be a bad Israeli supported unworthy of voting for. Some even believed Trump would bring peace! I pray or better yet, will meditate on relief and peace for the Palestinians. Maybe Hamas will finally think of their suffering people and surrender to the latest peace plan. Yep, surrender can be caring about your people…like Japan did after the nuclear bombing, WW 11.

So do you think Oct. 7 was a set-up? Israel seems pretty competent at detecting and intercepting these aid flotillas…what could it have been that made them miss the mid day motorcycle brigades, and powered parasails?

He enters a foreign nations water with intent to land without permission in the middle of a war zone and somehow, he is the victim.

I am not sure what the guy expected. A lot of places he would have been blown out of the water.

Un like many of the Israeli hostages that Hamas killed he will eventually be set free. Good thing Isreal took him prisoner not the people he is supporting he will be humanly treated.

Please provide links to back up your information.

They have stated they are enroute to support Hamas therefore they have decided to join the fight thus making them combatants and thus a legal target.

Example. In WWII both sides attacked each other ships in international waters not just in the specific territory of their nations. Both sides sunk cargo ships carrying supplies to the combatants therefore Isreal could legally have sunk the ship instead of capturing the people. When you inject yourself into a war then wonder why there is consequences your an idiot. Many nations ie the commie paradise of China the old Soviet Union etc would have just shot them out of the water.

This has been a political stunt from the beginning. There is no port or even a wharf in Gaza where cargo ships can be off-loaded. Biden spent $230 million building a floating pier. It lasted 20 days before the project was abandoned. It cost the life of an American soldier and two others were injured. You can’t unload anything bigger than a rowboat in Gaza

This motley assembly knew this before they set sail. They knew they would be detailed by the Israelis and eventually deported.

It makes for cheap street theater but is otherwise a meaningless gesture

That pier was built because Israel forbid the US and others from landing aid in Gaza directly. It’s not hard to just land a boat on the flat, sandy beaches.

ISRAEL IS A BULLY – THE US’s LITTLE THUG IN THE MIDDLE EAST, A COUNTRY LONG WITH POLICIES OF HEGEMONY. NOW CLEARLY PERPETUATING GENOCIDE!
IF THE TABLES WERE TURNED AND RUSSIA DID THAT TO AN AID FLOTILLA IN INTERNATIONAL WATERS, TRYING TO REACH UKRAINE, THERE WOULD BE A HUGE OUTCRY FROM THE WEST!!!!.

….but when israel does it, ‘shhhhhhh!’, we simply look the other way
….and give them more weapons.

That only shows your limited horizon on current events. China has been building artifical islands in international waters then declaring them PRC owned sea lanes for a decade. It keeps declaring parts of what were routinely declared international waters as it’s sole jurisdiction. And the UN is busy going “‘shhhhhhh!’”.

“The lack of legally legitimate historical claims to South China Sea islands (beyond the trade routes argument) leaves the Chinese perspective with no legal standing under international law. ”

As Pompey put it ” “‘Will you not give up,’ he said, ‘reading laws to us men girt with swords?'”

Oh! Is that what the UN General Assembly was laughing at last week?
The US is one of the only holdouts not to condemn Israel’s ethnic cleansing. Even Trump’s 20% here in the US are starting to wonder about Netanyahu leading Trump around by the nose, and Mossad talking some Saudi kids into taking out the World Trade Center, and that Mormon kid into shooting Charlie Kirk.

weed growing Klamath/salmon river colonizers off to save the world with pathetic activism!
what a huge risk they are taking in the Real World.
risking their lives for a anti-western culture that fundamentally hates people that look like them.
so very very kind hearted and naive.
reminds me of me in my 20s.
but these are grown men in their 40s!
driven to globalist activism because the price of weed is low!
they could have just stayed in Caly and picked a local issue.., but they are worried about people over there…
not the Karuk or the wiyot not the Yurok
these red headed self haters want to become desert dwelling islamists because they feel bad about their own comfort here in the depths of the leftist humboldt bubble.
i hope they stay safe, but i can’t condone the martyrdom they are attempting, as if it will cleanse them of their own American colonizer status.

I also assume you really know, in such I agree mostly but your failure to signal an agreement with general humanity and choose instead to remain divisive on a ethnocentric level that in your focus, leads me to believe your stuck in a lost paradigm and being manipulated in to divisiveness by the very same serpent seed. I hope im erroneous in this assessment, good luck in the end times, I feel myself that the struggle is to decide if we want to accept or reject aspects of outside influence in to humanity. Your not in my opinion wrong in anything your saying but your focus should be higher is my suggestion.
