A fallen tree has blocked both lanes of the Avenue of the Giants near Phillipsville this morning, shutting down a stretch of the roadway since about 4 a.m. while crews worked to clear debris and address damaged utility lines.

According to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page, the first report came in at approximately 3:55 a.m. when a tree was reported blocking the northbound lane near mile marker 4.96 on State Route 254.

By 4:18 a.m., CHP logs indicated the tree was blocking both northbound and southbound lanes. A CHP unit later confirmed the roadway was fully closed and they placed flares and cones to stop traffic.

The CAD notes indicate the tree was approximately 15 inches in diameter. Responding crews determined a communication line had also been damaged, though the utility pole itself remained intact.

Caltrans, PG&E, Frontier Communications, AT&T, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office were contacted during the incident. PG&E was initially expected on scene around 5:20 a.m., while AT&T later advised there was no estimated time of arrival available as of shortly before 8 a.m.

We’ve reached out to Caltrans for more information, and as with all initial incident reports, information may change as additional details become available.

Update: Manny Machado, Caltrans Public Information Officer, says that the Avenue of the Giants has been reopened.

Not a very big redwood tree, but I am glad no vehicles were there when it fell. Sure would smash the front of your vehicle or completely total the front end and probably make your airbags go off. If a motorcycle rider had hit that tree, I think it would cause major injuries of even death. That you to the CHP for their quick response by marking the fallen tree with road flares and cones to alert drivers.

OMG Yes. It would have been terrible for the motorcycle rider.

And just imagine if it had landed on a school bus full special needs kids supervised by nuns. That would have been ever so tragic and sad.

God works in mysterious ways…

Bill, the Special Need’s kids who ride on a school bus are watched over by people who can handle most emergency’s. It sure would have been tragic as these kids have enough problems already.
