Juvenile Taken to Hospital After Bicycle Struck by Vehicle in Eureka

Vehicle vs Bicyclist feature iconA boy was taken to the hospital around 7:08 this evening after a vehicle struck his bicycle near the intersection of Hodgson Street and W Street north of the Sequoia Park Zoo area in Eureka, according to scanner traffic.

Initial reports indicated a vehicle-versus-bicyclist collision. However, later information clarified that the bicycle itself was struck and not the juvenile rider directly.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene, his parents were located, and the juvenile was transported to the hospital. The extent of injuries was not immediately known.

Further details about how the collision occurred have not yet been released.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Fingers crossed for the little dude. Hopefully he just rook a tumble and didn’t break anything. Circumstances unknown on this situation but recently McKinleyville has become (even more of) a madhouse with tykes on e-scooters. The parents seem to release them into the wild with no concept of stop signs, crosswalks, or the rules of the road. I suspect it’s the same in other bedroom communities. As drivers we have to be increasingly cautious of small people in or near the roadway.

A couple evenings ago I was driving past the zoo and there was what looked like a 5 year old zooming around on the road in front of the zoo on either a mini-bike or and e-bike built like a mini-bike. No adult anywhere around either.

Of course drivers need to be careful, but bicyclists need to follow laws too.
Unfortunately, the great majority of bike riders– especially kids do not follow the laws.
This can create dangerous situations that even the most careful driver might not be able to avoid.

Children shouldn’t need to be aware of the law to play safely outside their own homes Jebs my friend.

Where I was a youngster we were taught how to use proper hand signals when making turns with our bicycle and to follow the laws. Same applies to a mini-bike or an e-bike. Situational awareness and follow the rules.

Hand signals won’t save you from impatient drivers. As witnesses reported, the child was clearly visible in the road trying to ride his bike and got hit anyway. Let’s not cope too hard here.

So kids can run wild and not obey or be aware of the laws and still be safe outside. Turn your kids loose and let us know how that works our for you and them. If they don’t need to be aware of laws which were put into place to help keep them safe, what will?

Riding on side walks, on the wrong side of the road and blowing through stop signs endangers the cyclist even more than drivers. Anyone riding bicycles of any kind need to be aware and obeye the rules of the road for their own safety.

Your child when they become old enough to ride a bike by themselves should be taught the rules of the road. It is the parent’s responsibility to teach them. They can also pick up a book on Bicycle Laws from DMV or read it online. The more the child knows the better off he or she will be while riding. Also please furnish your child with a certified safety helmet. They are not much but better than nothing.

If kids are expected to know the rules of the road then so are drivers, the main rule as a driver is you have a duty to avoid a collision and a duty of care around places where children might play, as was the case here.

You completely missed the point — the kid I saw was way too young to be left unsupervised on a busy street on a powered bike. He was weaving in and out of the traffic lanes without looking. That’s a main connecting road between Cutten and Harris with a popular attraction on it.

Not in the fucking street when they are too young to know the dangers.

Multiple eye witnesses confirm the kid was at fault, weaving in and out of traffic. The kid swerved into the car. This is bad reporting.

Hopefully he’s OK. And hopefully he learns the rules of the road. And hopefully reporters can stop printing LIBEL just to get more clicks.

Good luck arguing the child is at fault right next to his home and a park. Drivers would owe a heightened duty of care in a place like that. Your own statement that the kid was clearly visible in the road, as confirmed by multiple eyewitnesses, only strengthens the argument that the driver should have acted more carefully to avoid a collision. It’s clear that this was not a case of a child jumping into the road, but a dangerous and impatient driver who wanted to go fast even if a child was in the way. In my opinion thank you very much!

The parents are at fault, and lax in their child raising.

How long until we’re gonna take this seriously? Eureka’s TSC just took two months off, they’ve barely been able to respond to the fatality in February. Not to mention the two children hit by cars in town since then. Feels like we’re being held hostage by an inept and unwilling government who are more interested in letting dangerous drivers run roughshod over people’s lives and the lives of the elderly and children than they are in doing the necessary work. Oh but please wait for the bike plan to be finished in 2050, then everything will be great! Please. We need action today!

I welcome downvotes from dangerous drivers by the way. Every downvote is one more dead kid, load em up for me and put that blood on your hands drivers! As long as you can get home as fast as possible and sit your ass on the couch right?

TO THE E BIKE COMMENT there has been 2 recent cases of under age kids on e bikes getting in fatal accidents. One killed the kid, one k8lled a teacher and Vietnam veteran. It’s getting harder to tell the e-bikes from the e- motorcycles. Some of the e- bikes do 40 mph +.

They say speed kills and that seems to be the case. I’ve heard that having a higher speed limit next to your house can reduce its value too.

There is talk of licence and insurance for electric 2 & 3 wheelers, like mopeds were 30 years ago.

This makes sense as technically they are motorcycles.

The Hodgson/W/Chester intersection is complex. Essentially, the Chester-Hodgson connection is a straight-ahead movement but it does jag slightly, and some drivers signal for a turn when they are effectively going straight ahead, which can confuse pedestrians and other drivers. I live right by this intersection, so I see this behavior all the time.
