[Update] Rockslide Reported Blocking SR-162 Near Dos Rios

A 911 caller told emergency dispatch that a rockslide blocked both lanes of State Route 162 Friday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information page.

The slide was reported around 4:12 p.m. Initial reports indicated both directions of travel were blocked, though subsequent information suggested only the eastbound lane was fully blocked. Caltrans arrived on scene at approximately 4:15 p.m.

The location sits in the Dos Rios area of Mendocino County. The CHP CAD places the rockslide just east of where Laytonville-Dos Rios Road and Poonkinney Road meet Highway 162.

Though the scene is now being assessed, details on the extent of the debris and an estimated reopening time were not immediately available. Please use caution if traveling in the area.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Update: The CHP log indicated the roadway was estimated to be cleared around 5 p.m. The CHP entry is no longer listed in the cad incident listings indicating the roadway was cleared as estimated.

When the state gets done with the high speed rail project, they’ll have time to get sr162 fixed.

State has been spending a lot of money on Covelo Rd the last few years. The repaved surface is great to drive on, one bridge has been replaced and the 8 mile bridge will be finished this summer. What is it again you are grousing about?

Recently took a trip to Japan and rode the Shinkansan (bullet train) and it’s awesome. Same in Spain a few years ago, so much better than driving or flying. If there was ever a commute corridor that needs high-speed rail it’s SF-LA, as an alternative I-5 is beyond stupid. Execution could be better, but the concept is beyond obvious.

And the other counties should subsidize your rural lifestyle why? Do the math, what would the per-capita cost be for looping you in? Clearly you must be a socialist.

Regardless, I do think that the long-term plan for high-speed rail should be Seattle to San Diego, and obviously stops in places like Portland, Yreka, Redding, , etc.

A coherent connector service would make sense too, but we don’t do sensible public transit as a rule. Also you really have to account for the geography here, north-coast rail will have to follow the 101 corridor and the connect to the central valley at sensible places. But again, how much ridership is Ft. Bragg going to contribute?? If Greyhound can’t make a buck running busses up 101, then where is that money supposed to come from? Oh yeah, you’re a socialist .. all good.

The transportation money out there gets devided either by the bay area, or socal with little left over for us socialists in the rural outreaches of the state. Prior to being elected, lawmakers will promise anything to get the vote. Since the redistricting of congressional seats in NorCal some years back, those transportation funds have dwindled. Our current temporary congressman is from the bay area. Take a guess who he really represents.
