Humboldt County Democrats Pass Resolution Opposing U.S. Military Action in Iran

The Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee approved a resolution on Saturday, March 21 opposing U.S. military involvement in Iran and calling on Congress to block funding for the conflict.

The resolution asks federal lawmakers to use their authority to stop additional spending on the war and to oppose a renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act unless stronger privacy protections are added.

It further criticizes Section 702, arguing it allows surveillance of Americans without sufficient oversight.

The document also raises concerns about who has the authority to declare war, noting that power is assigned to Congress under the U.S. Constitution. It references early reports of U.S. casualties and expresses concern about the possibility of American troops being sent into Iran.

Supporters of the military action, including members of the Trump administration and some national security advocates, say the conflict is aimed at countering threats in the region and protecting U.S. interests and allies. They also argue that surveillance tools like Section 702 are important for intelligence gathering.

Others have pushed back on the resolution’s claims, saying presidents have long carried out military operations without formal declarations of war. For example, President Barack Obama authorized airstrikes and military action in Libya in 2011 without a congressional declaration of war. In addition, Congress still has the ability to limit funding if it chooses.
