[Update: Roadway Open] Multi-Vehicle Collision Closes Highway 1 Near Caspar Creek Bridge

traffic accident

A multi-vehicle collision involving a delivery truck shut down both lanes of Highway 1 near the Caspar Creek Bridge Monday afternoon, with a full road closure in effect as of early reports.

The crash was reported at approximately 2:55 p.m. on southbound Highway 1 just north of County Road 409 at the bridge. Initial reports indicated a tow truck and a sedan were involved, with the incident later updated to a three-vehicle collision including a delivery truck. Fuel was reported in the southbound lane.

At least one person was reported injured, though the extent of injuries remained unclear. An off-duty Mendocino Fire personnel member was reported on scene in the early minutes of the response.

Both lanes were blocked, with CAL FIRE and CHP responding. A full road closure was requested by on-scene personnel, with efforts underway to open at least one lane. A CHP unit was on scene within minutes of the report. OES was notified due to the fuel spill, and a tow truck was dispatched with an estimated 25-minute arrival time as of 3:17 p.m.

Motorists traveling Highway 1 in the Caspar area should expect significant delays and plan for alternate routes if possible.

There is no alternative route unless you take Hi 20 to Willits then south to Orr Springs Road and then back to the coast. Caltrans removed the old downstream bridge near the beach when the Caspar High Bridge opened in 1971.

Boonville Road back would be better than Orr Springs Road.

Truck managed to retain control long enough to avoid oncoming traffic; did someone really try to pass him on the right there?
