California Horse Racing Board Rejects Humboldt County Fair Race Dates, Dealing Blow to Ferndale Fair

The California Horse Racing Board voted 4-2 today to reject proposed 2026 race dates for the Humboldt County Fair and the Tehama District Fair, effectively ending what many viewed as the last realistic hope of restoring live horse racing to Humboldt County this year.

Meeting Feb. 26 in Arcadia, the board declined to award 12 race dates requested by Humboldt over a four-week stretch from Aug. 5 through Sept. 1. Tehama had sought nine days of racing from April 29 through May 26 in Red Bluff.

Board staff outlined regulatory, financial and operational concerns in advance of the meeting. Staff cited unresolved agreements with industry stakeholders in Humboldt’s application. Commissioners also questioned whether sufficient horses, trainers and wagering interest would return to sustain racing in Northern California after more than a year’s absence.

According to Bloodhorse, the Thoroughbred Owners of California and the California Thoroughbred Trainers opposed awarding Northern California race dates, as did representatives of Southern California tracks.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the central issue is advance deposit wagering (ADW) and computer assisted wagering (CAW) revenue. That money that flows to the host track. If Tehama and Humboldt were racing, wagers placed in Northern California would remain with Northern California tracks, as they did from the start of ADW until shortly after the closure of Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, instead of being redirected to Southern California.

The nearly three-hour meeting focused heavily on the financial condition of racing in California and whether diverting wagering revenue back to Northern California would threaten Southern California tracks.

“The point is, we’re right at the tipping point,” CHRB Chairman Greg Ferraro said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “And by furthering funds away in the north, it has no chance of success…mSo, you’re going to end up destroying all of racing in California to bet on a no-chance situation in the north.”

The Times also reported that a month of fair racing would cost Southern California $2 million in diverted revenue.

Locally, the decision landed hard.

Johanna Rodoni, who serves on the Board of Directors of the Humboldt County Fair, said fair leadership made a final effort in recent weeks to keep the possibility alive. “We jumped through all the hoops. We did everything they asked for and they still turned us down,” she told us by phone this afternoon.

She added, “This will be a big economic blow to the whole county.”

No one was available to speak when RHBB placed a call to the Humboldt County Fair office Thursday afternoon seeking additional comment.

For generations, horse racing has been a defining feature of the Ferndale fair. With Thursday’s vote, the 2026 season will move forward without live racing in Humboldt County, and the timeline for any possible return remains uncertain.

It’s not about the gambling for most ppl there. It’s a party, everyone is having a good time, being up close to the jockeys and ponies. It was a fantastic vibe, if you don’t walk around with stick in you keest anyway.

That year they shot multiple horses (one an equine senior citizen) probably didn’t help convince folks they run a quality operation.

I love when non-horse people explain horses to equestrians. Calling regulated racing “torture” tells me you’ve never stepped foot in the industry.

Tragic injuries are rare but real in any equine sport. When they happen, humane euthanasia prevents prolonged suffering — it’s not cruelty, it’s responsibility.

Meanwhile, Humboldt keeps losing revenue streams… but yes, let’s celebrate that.

Another county cash cow pissed away by incompetent government. And now the Amazon show is on the ropes. At least no sales tax. Sacramento fucks us again, and the limp supervisors complain about their stapler, and miss out on the cake.

I don’t gamble except at the Ferndale Fair. It was a really fun time for everyone. It’s a real bummer for so many reasons. And half the ppl posting on this board celebrate every missed economic opportunity our little community. Overly idealistic young ppl I’m guessing.

A county fair is supposed to be a showcase for all that a county has to offer and citizens to show off their wares and crafts. Too much has been put into just horse racing and very little into the rest of the fair grounds. That area should be multipurpose, and in days past, it was. At one time stock car races were there on the dirt track with one fellow killed after being skewered by a guard rail.

Other things can happen; the inner field can be used for literally anything. The grandstand is perfect for concerts. Big ones. Pow wows. Renaissance fairs. Any kind of “faire”, really. Nope, it’s the same old, same old. I’ve said my peace when they asked for it and so have others and it seems our voices fall on deaf ears.

Maybe you were born here but unless your on the Red Road or closely adjacent to it, not too far back in time your people “rushed” here from somewhere else…and mostly fucked the place up & left it for others to clean, repair, and restore.

The arrogance & hubris over white nativism in N America, and many many other places, is a bold fucking delusion.
More so when passing that shite down through the generations to degrade the contributions of others that one just can’t sèem to attain themselves.

Got jealousy?

Yeesh, what’s with all the gatekeeping? If McFarland wants to host a show, so what. Sell seats. And the 51 other weekends of the year can be filled with someone else. Fairs are for whomever sells tickets and puts on a good show. Or whatever else. If he’s lived here 5 years or 40 eh, let him have his space.

CsM,
You’re confused…
I don’t give a shit either way. Have whoever yall want play.
Enjoy. Generate income.

“Farcical” seems to have a problem with Brett not being authentically Humboldt enough, as if he or anyone else is “authentically” Humboldt.
I called BS, again.

Actually I was more or less dovetailing the comment about authenticity. It’s a sort of gatekeeping like one isn’t allowed to make a claim of anything unless they’re OG or something. It’s a superiority thing.

That’s twice you post with outright racism. This is no longer sarcasm, if it ever was.

Also, collages are free? I dunno, the Hodge Podge to keep it stuck together is kind of pricey in quantity.

More shitty racism from Mr. Clark.

Hey Google AI, what do you call someone who repeatedly makes racist comments?

“Someone who repeatedly makes racist comments can be described by several terms depending on the context and severity of their behavior. Key terms include:

  • Bigot: A person who is obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, and is intolerant toward other people’s opinions or beliefs.
  • Prejudiced person: Someone holding preconceived opinions that are not based on reason or actual experience, particularly regarding race.
  • Racial harasser: When racist comments, slurs, or jokes are frequent and part of a pattern (especially in a workplace), this behavior constitutes racial harassment, which violates someone’s dignity and creates a hostile or degrading environment.
  • Xenophobe: Someone who shows a dislike or fear of people from other countries or cultures.
  • Supremacist: A person who believes that a particular race or group is superior to others.

Types of Behaviors/Actions

  • Engaging in Microaggressions: Often used to describe everyday, subtle, or even unintentional verbal insults that communicate hostile or negative racial slights toward marginalized groups.
  • Using Dog Whistles: Using coded language or “suggestive” political messaging that appeals to a specific group’s prejudice, allowing the speaker to maintain plausible deniability.
  • Interpersonal Racism: The term used for when a person’s conscious or subconscious prejudice influences their interactions with others, ranging from slurs to “everyday” comments.”

Yep, that checks out!

Yet another reason California should be divided into two states. Its bad enough being subordinated to bay area interests let alone Southern California.

Sure, so we can become the Church of Bethel of Northern CA? They’ve already been politicking around here because of the redistricting.

They can take our water from us but don’t dare take their money from them. 2 million is nothing to southern california ,it would actually be noticed in Northern California.
