Raise Your Hand if Your Phone Gave You a Mini Heart Attack Tonight
Did anyone else’s heart leave their body for a second? 😳
At 7:06 p.m., phones across a surprisingly large area of Humboldt and Mendocino counties simultaneously erupted with a message that told us to calm down and at the same time run for our lives. The first part said,
“CANCEL Evacuation Order”
…and…then immediately following,
“Wildfire in the Covelo-Agency Fire area, East of Mina Rd to Agency Road. Do not delay, Evacuate Immediately.”
Apparently both messages tried to occupy the same alert at once.
One reader said an entire restaurant suddenly lit up with alarms.
This reporter lives more than two hours from the Agency Fire and my phone still screamed at me.
Fortunately, the second part was outdated–it just showed the order that was being canceled. The fire was reported contained at 7:12 p.m.
If you got the alert, where were you? Did your whole room start chirping at once? We’re especially curious if anyone was in a public place when everyone’s phones erupted.
Editor’s note: Please consider this post in the spirit of humor in which it was made. As a member of those who have occasionally hit “send” a little too soon, I’ve made enough memorable mistakes over the years that I have no business throwing stones. Sometimes you just have to laugh though, before you fix it, and move on.

Didn’t get that message in del Norte
No message in Eureka tonight.
lost coast🖐
I heard the alert while fixing dinner. I immediately went outside because I was near the door. I did not panic.
Myers Flat
Yes, we got the message three times, Driving home from the Bay Area. First message came in around Ukiah then Garberville then Rio Dell. it was a little confusing at first but i told my husband it does say “CANCEL Evacuation Order”.
Heard at least 4 other phones besides my own go off in the dining room of the In-n-Out in Ukiah within 15 seconds.
Then heard a bunch of the cooks & help in the back talking over it. Am guessing a few phones went off back there.
Although, I wasn’t surprised by my phone, as I use the Watch Duty app & had gotten an Evac Warning Alert for the Agency fire proximity just minutes before the breakthrough Emergency Broadcast Alert.
My phone runs the Alert Test every month.
Couple hours earlier they had just opened the hourly opening to get through the slide closure on 36…which moves at a snails pace and as my wife entered the danger zone he phone went off with an earthquake alarm. She said it wasn’t funny.
My wife was in Cloverdale when she got the alert on her phone.
Got the message. Thought it was another quake alert! Read it and figured someone made a mistake or it was canceling the following message.
