Roughly 10 minutes before 11 tonight, a lightning storm began moving in from the ocean. According to the scanner, one large flash and loud roll of thunder were reported by emergency personnel happening roughly over McKinleyville. Lightning maps shows a lightning storm moving in mostly north of Trinidad currently.

However, a large strike shows on Lightning Maps as occurring northwest of Redway about 11:05 p.m.

UPDATE 11:13 p.m.: One reader writes that right after the McKinleyville flash, power went out almost immediately. PG&E Power Outage Map shows that at 10:47 p.m. power went out to about 119 customers in the southern part of McKinleyville.

UPDATE 11:33 p.m.: A power pole is reported to be on fire after lightning struck it at 4446 Mitchell Road southeast of Eureka.

UPDATE 11:40 p.m.: A tree is reportedly down after being struck by lightning on Broadway.

UPDATE 11:47 p.m.: According to emergency personnel speaking over the scanner, southbound 101 is shut down at the Bayshore Mall where the tree that was struck by lightning fell.

Power also went out briefly in Fieldbrook at same time as Mckinleyville. Had lightning and thunder intermittently for the next hour or so. Extremely heavy downpours afterward.

There were .82 inches of rain in my rain gauge this morning at 70 ft elevation near EHS. We are catching up on our seasonal rain.

Also near EHS. No rain gauge, but i dont doubt your measurement. Got a quick burst of hail right after that big, seemingly endless, thunder roll. Lights flickered during our late night show, then the sky growled. Our 14 y.o. Dog doesn’t get bothered by much anymore. We’ve had a few more hail moments through the morning. But the rain, oh the rain, ever the rain. Might be time to drill a drain hole, or find and punch out a plug, in my old car.

South Arcata, around 11:24 last night there was a very bright flash then a huge BANG!! I swear it sounded like it hit Windsong or maybe the ball field, but lightningmaps.org says it was in a pasture east of the S. G St. onramp. We both jumped out of our skin and hubby’s ears were ringing. I’m just glad I didn’t wet myself!
