Eureka Takes Stance on Venezuela ‘Occupation’

One of the speakers at the January 12 special meeting.

One of the speakers at the January 12 special meeting.

The City of Eureka has formally declared that it “condemns the ongoing US military strikes, occupation or occupation-like control of Venezuela” in a resolution updated from a previous version opposing strikes on alleged drug-running boats.

The city’s engagement in national and global affairs was seen again at a Jan. 12 special meeting of the city council.

On the agenda was a single item, a resolution “Opposing United States Military Occupation of Venezuela and Support for the War Powers.”

During a public comment period, members of the Humboldt Anti-War Committee thanked and praised the council for the special meeting and the resolution – with a caveat.

They and others who spoke objected to a sentence one speaker described as “the stinker” in an otherwise worthy resolution.

The resolution on the agenda advanced opposition to US military actions in Venezuela “without explicit authorization from the United States Congress in compliance with the Constitution and the War Powers resolution.”

Many speakers said the sentence should be removed, as the US actions in Venezuela should be opposed even if they gain congressional approval.

But support for the resolution was unanimous among all who spoke, with one speaker saying the resolution is “actually way more progressive than what I’ve seen other city councils do.”

There was plenty of commentary about the military actions themselves, which were described as immoral and illegal.

I know most people in this room were probably appalled when they saw that a president of a foreign nation and his wife were being held on a US ship, then at Guantanamo Bay, then put on a plane and taken to Metropolitan Detention Center in New York City,” said one speaker.

Others said the US actions will “cause more problems in that country,” and that Venezuelans are among the “indigenous peoples the United States is willing to kill for their natural resources.”

Some speakers responded to the argument that the council shouldn’t spend time on matters beyond the scope of city business.

“I really want to speak to that, because when it’s our tax dollars, when we’re complicit in these kinds of acts … we all bear some responsibility on some level,” said one speaker.

Mark Adams, a Eureka teacher, said, “Why do I support the resolution opposing US military involvement in Venezuela? Simple, because we the people must help solve this.”

In motioning to approve the resolution, Councilmember Renee Contreras-DeLoach vouched for removing the part about congressional approval, which other councilmembers agreed with.

The resolution states that the city clerk will “transmit copies” of it to a slew of federal officials, from the president on down, including the “United States Secretary of Defense.”

But Councilmember Mario Fernandez pointed out that the Department of Defense is now called the Department of War and the name change is also applied to its leader.

Thus the resolution will instead be addressed to the Secretary of War.

DeLoach was shaking her head and was asked if it was because she disagreed with the amendment.

“No, I’m shaking my head in disbelief,” she said. “Yeah, whatever they’re called.”

The only councilmember making a substantial statement was Councilmember Kati Moulton, who said she is “overwhelmed and dumbfounded” by the state of things.

She noted that the resolution’s first draft focused on the boat attacks and “then things escalated quickly and significantly – I am deeply concerned about and opposed to our government so blatantly violating international law.”

Moulton’s statement also included objection to “our government so blatantly disregarding our own laws on our own soil, unjustly and violently occupying our own cities,” inaction on the Epstein files, “the wholesale destruction of our social safety nets and the looting of our natural resources” and “ LGBTQ community members who are facing increasing danger every single day for simply existing.”

Moulton concluded with an explanation of why she supports city advocacy on national issues.

“I want our city government to let the people in our community know that they are safe and that they are appreciated,” she said. “I want us to be able to speak with a voice as a city to the larger world.”

The resolution’s approval was unanimous, with Mayor Kim Bergel and Councilmember Scott Bauer absent.

What ever happened to releasing the video on the second strike on those boat survivors?

They need to condemn the occupation of the United States by the ICE thugs.

Have you noticed that since Maduro’s capture there has not been anymore boat strikes. Guess it’s OK to smuggle drugs now as long as we get a cut.

I guess that’s one possibility, or perhaps the organizational structure of the Venezuelan drug smuggling operation has been disrupted to the point that they aren’t blatantly running boats full of drugs. We would probably both need a higher security clearance to know which, if either are true.

You have offered up a rational point of view that highlights how an impossibly myopic and ill-informed view of reality is keeping some people – and apparently an entire city council – from grasping the nuance of what is actually going on, geopolitically.

Can you imagine the outrage if the Obama or Biden administrations were blowing up boats and killing survivors on the pretext they somehow posed a threat to the United States?

But seriously, considering the ECC struggles to balance the budget and provide basic services it’s ludicrous to be taking positions on issues they have no responsibility for and no ability to impact.

Maybe they should focus on filling in a few potholes and clearing a few homeless camps off the sidewalks so people could safely drive and walk around town — you know — city business — stuff they were actually elected to deal with.

Moulton says she wants the city to speak with one voice but mailing off their irrelevant resolution is like the proverbial tree falling in the forest with no one to hear it.

I reckon the level of outrage would be the exact same. R supporters would also be outraged. Whether or not they support issues seems to have no correlation with whether they oppose them. Also, there’s enough democrats that behave the same way. Ya, Kamala’s campaign was a train wreck, a stupid move by the Ds. It seems they’re almost all evil. How does anyone look at any recent president and say: “that guy really has my best interest in mind” 🤦🏼‍♂️ But damn, I’d have voted for a cow before this pudgy sleaze bag. Nevermind the lying to yourselves, and loco posts, buy dayum! Y’all gotta be lying to your children about what behavior is acceptable, why it was ok for their immigrant relatives to come here, the planet you’re leaving them, whether they should have all the freedoms we did. Ouch 😢

Seems as if my comment annoyed someone else. That’s unfortunate. I was asking a valid question.

Seems as if a few are interfering with legitimate City Business and the majority on the City Council are allowing themselves to be distracted by those few. My thoughts are the City Council should be working to run the riff-raff from the fair city of Eureka and working on a budget to balance the amount going out with the amount coming in. They’ve no business concerning themselves with international policy while there are pressing matters within their jurisdiction.

I do have one other suggestion:

Eureka City Meetings are uninteresting, and I promise never to set foot there again, since the whole place is too scary for me…

I don’t know everything. My observations are anecdotal. However I did travel in Venezuela before Chavez came to power and I met some people I have stayed in touch with. I also know a few Venezuelan ex-pats who came here and are now legal US citizens. They are ALL of them overjoyed that Maduro was removed. And they are all very grateful of what Trump has done so far in Venezuela. I think people here in Humboldt have developed very strong opinions that everything Trump does is wrong and evil and I think that’s a very ignorant perspective to view the world from. I also think these same ignorant Humboldt people are quite addicted to issuing lightweight statements as symbolic gestures of their moral superiority while they have little to no actual knowledge of the situation they are claiming to care so much about. And I think the city councilmembers should be focusing on our important local issues instead of allowing these uninformed mobs to waste and distract the city council’s limited and expensive time. I think what is happening with all these declarations is useless, time-consuming and stupid…

It’s definitely true that the protesters have no idea or context about this situation. Just because Trump did an arrogant power move doesn’t mean it’s bad. We, as a country, under Biden AND Trump have been trying to get rid of Maduro for years, with many different failed attempts. Trump gets credit in my book for nailing it. He has nailed it a couple times in his presidency, but I still can’t stand his leadership and I think most of what he does is awful. ESP this ICE business.

Here is an article about one important development coming from Maduro’s removal- the release of political prisoners. Also in Nicaragua the government that does not allow free elections has released a batch of political prisoners as they are now concerned that Trump might come after them, This stuff is real. Hard-line regimes are releasing real people back to their real families, people who were kidnapped and secretly imprisoned, some tortured…the reality is more complex than Orange Man Bad…..https://apnews.com/article/venezuela-prisoners-released-us-maduro-rodriguez-7dc52c3ed6251f561b7754fd50182588

Or the ones with a strong sense of patriotism. My married father had a job, a child, was over 30 when Pearl Harbor happened. He was clearly deferred by the draft standards of the times. It didn’t matter. He enlisted the next week, went to boot camp at 31, was in combat in the European theater at 32 and was on a ship heading for Japan at 35. Then demobbed and recalled for Korea. And he was not the only one by far.

That is one of the greatest ugliness of the left- it taught young people to despise their own country. Even worst those young people taught immigrants to hate it too. Such stupid entitlement to think their own situation is of their own making. There will be the occasional semi- respectful “yabut” from some of them but even they don’t mean it. No one has to have rose colored glasses but they do need some sort of glasses to see more than what is wrong.

There is an entire school of thought on the insertion of America in to both WWI and WWII, it ties in heavy today with what’s going on, look up arthur balfour and lionel rothschild and when you understand that you will understand war and America, no one has tried to fuck with us since 1812.

Furthermore I see no equivalence with pearl harbor which was an open act of war done under declaration by a nation actor with flags flying on the uniformed combatants. This instant act is a defacto declaration of war as seen by international law and accepted practices, some argue a sneak attack but no one argues it could be anyone but the Japanesse military under lawful order. No one has done that to us since. Its a false equivalency which has been pointed out every time by the isolationists and anti war types, usually one or two guys on the hill per incident and sometime one whole wing argues it in the media but when the money wants war we get it. But we have not declared war legally for any of the post WWII adventures in global politics. Wonder what else started right after WWII?

Terror attacks done by non uniformed non military actors have an issue in attribution, its a huge debate over how 911 was done and by who. There is a lot of interesting facts here the least of which was we went to Afghanistan for 20 years and grew opium and watched our nation slip in to addiction, a lot of people lament phent addiction but lack an understanding of what created it, china didn’t start the fire they just sold card board fire logs when the firewood ran out. All these wars in the middle east, I was a kid when they printed the golf war collectible trading cards and i watched all the patriotism for war that wasn’t ours. My father volunteered for Vietnam at 18, he came back to lead antiwar protest in SF and get dogs and firehoses turned on him for it. That was another war over opium, which goes back to the end of the Chinese revolution and the creation of the Triads by the CIA in Burma. Vietnam was over the port to ship the finished product from the Trafficante family run labs in Indochina. This all really goes back to the Rothschilds East India Company using the British navy to force opium trade in to China. Some say this is why they do the phent today.

Then your father was likely doing what he did from patriotism. Then participating in anti war protests would also be patriotic. A distrust of government is not unpatriotic. Assuming that one’s own government is the evil in everything is, the dismissing of what is good and the obsessing over what is bad. What I was talking about was oikophobia- the opposite of xenophobia- where the villain in every scenario is one’s own family. And it’s a self fulfilling prophecy.

The rest of your comment is dubious conspiracy theory 101 where CIA machinations are the things of Hollywood scriptwriters. And the insane. Yes, the CIA is full people of questionable grandiosity and politicians eat it up. But control? Rarely any in reality. Wanting to play the master manipulators is one thing. Achieving a useful end from it is vanishing rare. People in general are too flawed to be real supervillains.

Here a book you can read online for free.
https://archive.org/details/isbn_9781556521256/page/170/mode/2up

Books are too long i get it, but as I bet you are willing to accept it as a source here is all the wikipedia posts;

Republic of China, aka Taiwan
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuomintang

And then on the western side they retreated over to Burmese border,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuomintang_in_Burma

these then became our operation gladio style stay behind spies, the three generals who took their armies and all the dependents in the golden triangle to set up shop for us after 1949 they grew the opium the Trafficante clique processed and it was transshipped out of what was then French Indochina by the rubber plantations (Michelin tires), AKA the French connection (This was the first lab produced clean heroin aka China White) it came back to pizza spots at home. All this was good until Dien Bien Phu and the loss of control of that port by the French. Also interesting to note France allowed Nazi soldiers to remain in uniform and help police the Vietnamese during the beginning of the war.

There are no teams or sides in this politics racket, there is no side your on that wants an outcome that you want. There is no political solution because the game is rigged and you cant win, its all mafia style shit from the top down and somewhere between here and there they place Hollywood and everyone just agrees that is how it is. Hello the top cartel also owns all the banks and illicit trafficking, of all profitable types, and also own Hollywood.

Back in the “Free Speech” demonstrations, at UC Berkeley, my parents (UCB 1950) complained about the “outside agitators” disrupting the classes on that campus… Riots ensued, Mario Savio and all that…

Study some history…

The “Outside Agitators” in Humboldt will likely not be the leaders of tomorrow, and some of them may be receiving payment for disrupting the extremely important business of operating a shithole town on the North Coast…

For a body like the Eureka City Council, wasting taxpayer’s funds on international issues resolutions seems fantastically puerile, but hosting wild-eyed protestors in ethnic dress is just over the line of decency and appropriate business…

These political issues are far beyond the scope of practice, for a small burg’s “City Council”, and I am offended that constant coverage of senseless protests and diversion of normal business by “Outside Agitators” wastes the time of citizens and honest businesses…

Who are these people, and why don’t they have jobs?

Honest educated retirees feel that the reporting has become biased, and beyond ridiculous…

What business does a city have releasing these types of statements?

If this is to be done it should only be done after a open vote. It’s likely more than half of Eureka’s population does not support this declaration.

I think they do it to demoralize non conformist thinkers. Luckily non conformity is usually an inborn trait and comes with a life of knowing the herd is often a confused mass of cattle listening to the biggest bull.

What a bunch of silly fools. This failed Eureka city council is pandering to the 2% of the radical progressives. They were all good when Clinton and obama used ICE to ride us of illegal aliens. But they hate Trump so much they will support dictators and terrorist jihad.

A small city council spending its time issuing foreign-policy manifestos is exactly why people have lost confidence in local government. Eureka has potholes, crime, housing shortages, infrastructure decay, and public safety concerns, but instead the council is posturing about Venezuela, international law, and federal military decisions they have zero authority over and clearly don’t understand.

This isn’t “progressive,” it’s performative politics funded by local taxpayers who didn’t elect city officials to cosplay as the State Department. Declaring moral outrage doesn’t feed a single family, fix a road, or make Eureka safer.

Local government exists to govern locally. When city councils turn into ideological activist clubs, everyday residents pay the price in neglect, higher costs, and declining services.

Observing from a distance, you people are f….. . With a city council like that, you should declare unity with Russia, or China!

What city would do that?
You must not be from here, check this out and guess at the folks who paid for a council meeting to do this and how much that cost while they do nothing to solve their winning of the drug war up here.

Usual communist rhetoric. Maduro was a narco-terrorist scumbag like Chavez before him. They took every opportunity to undermine US including funding bad actors in the states with suitcases full of cash. BLM was created soon after (using Chavez money). We know how well that turned out.
The United States has every right to secure the region against cocaine and fentanyl trafficking, human trafficking (like the Tren de Aragua “couple” terrorists in Portland), terrorism and Chinese influence. CCP officials were in Caracas during the raid. Maduro was protected by Cuban security forces (sadly, all now dead). Hopefully, Cuba is next.

Comments: Start out nicely. Then shift to irony. Then the Red Meat people come out. So which is it? My belief is that this entire corrupt administration in DC needs to be locked up before the commander-in-chief starts a war that he cannot win.

My belief is, if the Democrats and especially Progressives hadn’t indulged their love of soap opera drama posturing for almost a decade, Trump wouldn’t have found issues that got him elected .

It was their self fulfilling prophecy made worse by their delusional self importance. Now he has overcome the worse they can do, he has utter contempt for opposition and its harder and harder to temper his actions by his desire for public adoration because, as much as they (you) hate him, they (you) have taught him to despise them (you) as inept tools . Congratulations on the mess you all simply can’t stop making worse.

This is reading like an “occupation” of the LoCo comments. Of course, freedom of speech is encouraged here, unlike there, where you get banned for offending the power tripping moderator by bucking the nut job school of thought.

Well, if not encouraged as is the hate speech of leftist politics, it is not suppressed wholesale.

That’s why I love Kym! Although we disagree on certain things, she mostly allows, mostly, the free flow of thoughts and opinions on here. I never go visit the lost coast outhouse and look at comments there because I know what I’m going to get.

Seems like it just started, who will puppet for the oil companies and ensure their investment is stable? Still have not seen a solid plan on that one.

The professional protestors (aka taxpayer dependent stoners) have their way yet again. It is easier to agree with them than to have the shriekers disrupting public meetings. As if ANYTHING that the Eureka city council says has ANY effect on international affairs. Time wasting nonsense….

Assuming they did it on their own, imagine if someone paid one of them or all of them some huge sum of money to make the gesture.

One would have to know how much juice comes out to judge the ROI on the squeeze.

Interesting concept. The citizens of Venezuela are celebrating the removal of their tyrannical drug king pin dictator and thanking the US for our help. The dictators henchmen who are left behind are literally murdering anyone who protests. The City Council of what has the pathetic title of The Drug Capital of Northern California is protesting the US removing the dictator. What am I missing?

Eureka needs to take a stance on the drug addicts shooting up needles in broad day light, there is serious issues with violence at fentanyl camps in Eureka, this proclamation means nothing, federal law supercedes any local proclamation, the feds are trying to stop the bad drugs from being imported, Eureka has a direct problem that can be bettered by taking out Maduro and other narcoterrorists, how do they not make the connection, why is Eureka sticking up for narco terrorist dictators like Maduro who was not elected and who has a history of human rights violations, he is not the elected president of Venezuela , not to mention his own people are cheering on Trumps takedown of Maduro.

Eureka has a stance, its the party stance, which says this is a quality of life issue and society owes them it being fixed for them before they are subject to punishment by the law, this is the policy. Same as sanctuary city and all the other religious beliefs of the corporate left, they echo the views of bankers from London, who are still pissed about the Alhambra decree. This is why these fools are to be looked at like fallen comrades or oath breakers, they betray the people and their blood for bankers favor. Such will be their final fate.

Incredible waste of time. Homelessness, drug addicts, no parking for business or employees. The city manager is a foul mouth dweeb with no real gravitas other than being head of parks and recreation. He tells the police who to hire and fire. All of it is a god-awful mess. And the city council can hold hands sing Kumbaya and pass this stupid shit. How about doing city business? I guess that’s too hard.
