Family Says Racial Slurs Went Unchecked During Six Rivers Youth Football Game

A screenshot of video footage of the October 19th Loggers v Warriors Single ‘A’ SRYF game involving youth ages 8-11 generally, was provided by a parent.
Assistant Coach for the Eureka Loggers ‘A’ team of the Six Rivers Youth Football Conference (SRYF) and family members of players say they are dismayed following a board meeting discussion about a game where use of the word “nigger” by players on the field allegedly went unchecked.
During a game on October 19, some witnesses allege that repeated racial slurs by members of the opposing Hoopa team to biracial players on the Eureka team reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation. The Eureka player involved — also a team captain and son of the Assistant Coach — was ejected from the game. The referee’s report noted the ejection was for ‘conduct toward opponents’ but did not mention the alleged racial slurs. Although both teams were penalized for personal fouls, only the Eureka player was identified in a later report about the incident, and the infraction was later upgraded to a ‘flagrant foul’ without mention of the slur allegedly directed toward the player.
According to those we spoke with, during the earlier part of the game, a head referee directed the kids to keep playing despite being advised of the language being used by players, at one point stating to a concerned parent that the slur was not a problem so long as it was spoken “without the hard ‘r’ sound,” explained one woman who witnessed the exchange. At another point though, after kids with the Eureka Loggers level ‘A’ Football league reported being taunted with the racial slur on the field repeatedly during the game, players were addressed directly by the head referee, said Single ‘A’ Loggers’ Assistant Coach Sarah King whose son plays for the team. She said the referee stopped play, asked all players to take a knee, and told them to ‘talk with your pads’ rather than with insults. But that didn’t stop the slurs, King alleges.
Despite the referee’s warning, parents and family members said the taunting continued, leaving some feeling that officials failed to protect the young players.
Pamela Maxwell of Eureka, a grandmother of players targeted with the slur and mother-in-law of the Assistant Coach, told us that either version of the word upset her. “You don’t use the A or the R to do anything in a sport, to belittle or hurt, or bring down or use it as an assault, insult, to get your way or to hurt another player if you’re losing, that’s not how you do it.”
“My grandson said he did not want to play anymore because nobody is helping him,” said Maxwell. She explained that according to the children, they have been targeted with the racial slur several times this season at different games.
At the resulting emergency board meeting following the incident, members and coaches briefly discussed a formal rule change addressing the use of racial slurs on the field, but no decision was made – leaving several coaches and parents feeling frustrated and unsupported by the league.
The SRYF board did not clarify the specific language of the proposed rule change in response to our email inquiry but did reaffirm their position against abusive language on the field. In a written statement, the board said, “[T]he SRYF Board of Directors do not condone the use of the ‘n’ word, hard ‘r’ or not, at any time for any reason.” They added, referring to Referee Coordinator Keith Altizer’s guidance, which was sent by email the following day, ”After the meeting concluded, steps were taken to collectively address the issue moving forward.”
Maxwell argued that the league’s response would have been stronger had the slur targeted another group. “If a white person calls a Native American person that, you’re gonna be upset, right? Or if they call you some derogatory name, you’ll be mortified,” she said. “Or if they said cracker or honky, then y’all would be upset and the bells would be ringing. But when black kids are targeted, there’s no bells, no sounds, no whistle,” Maxwell said. “It’s just ‘take it, it’s just football’.”
Sarah King, recently elected Vice President for the Eureka Loggers ‘A’ League and mother of players targeted with the slur, expressed frustration with inaction from the SRYF Board, noting that “in no other environment can you physically attack somebody while using [a] racial slur that is not punishable… .”
King said that while the referee initially called the penalty a personal foul during the game, the written report later classified it as a flagrant offense — an escalation she believes misrepresented what happened on the field.
Maxwell, who is adamant that “the n-word has no place in youth football,” does not dispute the ejection for a foul attributed to her grandson. Conceding that her grandson could have reacted with more restraint, she told us, “We accept [the decision],” of the board to disqualify him. She said, “[He] broke the rules. He didn’t control himself. We get that. But what he doesn’t have to do is get back in the game and be called these names and be made to suffer and nobody does anything about it.”
Maxwell and King both say the season has been marked by repeated incidents of verbal abuse and inconsistent officiating, culminating in the October 19 confrontation and a board meeting that left many feeling unheard. “Nobody should have to worry about what their color is when they’re playing football, or how if you like them or don’t like them if they’re playing football,” said Maxwell, adding, “[T]his is not what this is about. This is about kids interacting together, learning the sport.”

Provided by King, a screenshot of her message as Assistant Coach and Vice President of the Eureka Loggers ‘A’ League reflects concern for the unfolding rule changes scheduled for meetings in 2026, sent to the League President immediately following the SRYF board meeting of October 23, prior to the email from Altizer being circulated.
Clarification on rules regarding name-calling or racial slurs are already on the books, King confirmed, noting that the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) does address this in its rulebook but suggested that the local conference did not have the same standards. She said, “In Six Rivers Youth Conference rules, definitely name calling is not allowed in the code of conduct, but it’s not enforced on the field when it comes to racial slurs… .”
The slurs allegedly spoken on the field were also reported by players who were not black or bi-racial, and that the word was used with malice, according to King. “Several times, the kids came to the side of the field, saying that they are calling us the N-word, that even our kids who are not black, even our kids who are white are coming over to tell us,” she explained.
In a follow up email sent the day after the board meeting to all coaches and league representatives, Referee Coordinator Keith Altizer’s advisory email clarified his expectations on the field. He wrote, “After last night’s board meeting I feel compelled to reiterate my feelings about the use of any racial slurs on the football field. Simply, it will not be tolerated,” he wrote. In part, his advice clarified, “Any use of a racial slur that can be attributed to a specific player, coach, or fan, is an AUTOMATIC ejection from the game for a flagrant unsportsmanlike foul.”
Adding a stern word of advice as to adult supervision on the field, Ref. Altizer told coaches specifically, “I expect you to have a team meeting about this with your players so they know it is unacceptable and what the ramifications will be if it is used. We need to be communicating this to the kids from day one.”
In response to RHBB’s questions about the incident, the SRYF board further stated, “We have and will continue to follow the zero tolerance policy,” while acknowledging that their “rulebook needs some updating of verbiage to more specifically address certain situations, and per the rulebook, the February meeting is the time for such changes/updates to be presented, and March meeting is the time for voting on such changes/updates.”
The SRYF Conference Board is expected to vote on any proposed language changes in an upcoming meeting in early 2026.

Where have you gone, Jackie Robinson…
I was gonna say, Northern CA is a very backwards, ignorant and unevolved place, containing throwback hicks from backwoods shacks and whelped from generations of folk who hate everything…
Freedom isn’t free, and some stuff just won’t fly, even in a wild and crazy place, and fixing the “race issues” probably will require everyone everywhere to just stop paying attention to ethnicity and get on with the business of life…
This of course might just never occur.
It’s the Golden Rule that levels the play, and not just the one that says “Do unto others” but also the one that says “The one with the Gold”…
It appears that the officials tried to quelch the offending speech, and the game should have been forfeited, but these are kids and the media is full of this word, so maybe we all should grow thicker skins…
I grew up in a place where there were almost no Black People, but even Women don’t like the terms that used to be common…
Boys, if you talk like that, you might get fired, killed or worse…
Consider the time and place and who hears you speak, before being extremely rude or frankly racist…
Your comment was great, right up to the last sentence.
Hiding hate speech does not excuse it.
That was the wrong message to send.
It is the kind of attitude that perpetuates racism.
Jackie’s legacy was erased the day Obama was elected.
WTH? What are these kids 9 10 years old?Where are they learning this behavior?
Eureka should have just pulled their players off the field.
This comes as no surprise after the recent article by RHBB about a school principle shouting out the “n word” with numerous commenters supporting its use — and like here the slur was spelled out by RHBB under the guise of journalism.
The “team” using this slur should have been disqualified, the game forfeited, the so-called coach suspended and the referee fired — instead the only person to face any consequences is the kid who reacted after the adults did nothing.
The SRYF board members who voted to further penalize the kid should resign in disgrace.
“Under the guise of journalism”? I am glad the “n” word was spelled out in all its filth and shame. No glorification or mitigation. Basically, I agree with you otherwise. One comment suggesting that ending in “ah” versus “er” made it just fine was revelatory to say the least. Maybe privately among Black folks as an expression of solidarity and shared pain, but that’s it. Totally inappropriate and racist in any other context.
I’m starting to understand how Trump could get elected not once, but twice.
Everyone knows what the “n word” means so spelling it out is unnecessary and desensitizes people to its use — I agree it was revealing that some commenters thought it’s ok if the spelling is changed slightly — but several others supported its use regardless of spelling or intent.
Being desensitized to the use of the word sounds like a good thing to me. Let’s make the word know more offensive than honky or cracker, which I’m pretty sure no white person has ever been offended by.
Once again, in my opinion, which is certainly not everyone’s, clarity of fact is one of the most important aspects of journalism. And given that using the exact term “n word” as opposed to the word that was actually used can be considered a slur or not, while the actual word is almost always considered a slur when used with a hard R, but others think the term but ending in a soft A is not a slur–given all of that, clarifying exactly which word we’re talking about is important.
It was clearly being used as a slur which makes the spelling irrelevant and your use gratuitous.
Tsk tsk … this mindset leads to slippery slopes.
When the ref is reportedly saying that the soft a doesn’t count as a slur, then clearly it matters which exact version was used to some folks.
Kim if you remember I had emailed you the month before about the unconventional firing of two AA coaches. Fired infront of the kids at practice. Kids were devastated parents were upset. It was a huge deal. The people that run the league feel like they can do whatever they want. I had complained refs wernt qualified when 5 kids on our team one of which my son received concussion!! In one game. 10 years old. Our couch begged the refs to call illegal hits from ferndale. Ferndale coaches were heard telling their players to hit them where it hurts and make it count! The refs were on a power trip and instead of protecting the kids kicked their coach’s off the field. The whole league needs a complete revamp!!
I do remember your letter. It was part of our decision to cover this story.
Maybe next time get both sides to a story…This has been happening to Hoopa teams for years with very little coverage how now does this make for a one sided news worthy story? Ive been a reader for years even after I left the area but this may call for a delete!
Although I agree that both sides should always be heard, stick with Kym. The dialectic is evident in the comments, though many can be construed as unreasonable. We are getting somewhere.
The ref is an idiot — it’s a slur when used to taunt, demean or insult the people it’s directed at — any way you spell it it’s still a slur and any way you slice it it’s still baloney.
Say what…???
Can ya run that by me, again, please…???
Or at least spell it out…
LOL…
Clea’ly, whatever ’tis that ya tryin’ ta make clea’, still ain’t necessarily clea’…
Additionally…

What fucking difference does it make who the slur was being directed towards…???
Wrong is wrong…
How does someone’s ethnicity really matter when such a racial slur is used…
Is it, somehow, more, or less offensive to someone, depending upon the various colors of one’s skin…???
I don’t think so…
Isn’t that the exact type of discriminatory racist shit we should all be trying to call out and disavow…???

WTF…???
That actually sounds pretty damn racist of King to me, like, what fucking difference does THAT make…???
Does it MATTER, for comparison, what color the kids that were actually USING the slurs were…???
NO, it doesn’t, so, NO it also doesn’t matter what color the kids were who were on the receiving end of the slurs…..
Wrong is wrong…
Offensive is offensive…
Kids are kids, regardless of whether they are black or white, right…???
Either we are treating them all the same, or we are discriminating…
Shame on King for treating the kids differently, by uncceptingly racially profiling and separating the kids into two different categories of “black” and “white”…
That is racist/racism…
What was her point…???
Was she inappropriately suggesting that using the slur against the kids, was supposedly more or less offensive one way, or the other, depending upon one’s skin color…???
Because that’s sure what it sounds like, to me, but maybe I just don’t know what racism sounds like…
I’m pretty sure it also has to do with inappropriately dividing people, by color, that slurs are being used against, like King is doing with these kids, as if they were somehow supposed to be treated differently…
Let’s leave the “black” and ”white” descriptors out of it, when they are being used to describe something equal unequally, just like we should be leaving the ”n-word” out of it…
Being racist, while calling out racism, is utter hypocrisy…
It’s completely unnecessary. There’s a reason no other media outlets spell it out. Just because you don’t think it’s a problem, Kym Kemp, doesn’t mean other people don’t find it horribly offensive. It doesn’t matter that you’re just repeating what someone else said–it’s gratuitous and wrong. I guarantee you would feel differently if you weren’t white.
Guise? So what is the real motivation then?
Rap music.
All these kids listen to is rap music and all they say is the words they learn from that stuff and they do the things the music teaches them.
Taking the racism all the way back to the 90’s, huh? Ok, tipper gore🙄
’85, but what the hey.
Instead of being ignorant and deflective why don’t you actually research the things I claim and see for yourself whether or not the little kids that listen to this shit are emulating that and trying to be that which they see on YouTube and hear in the car.
I guess I’m a racist because I can notice patterns?
Where are the parents?
They are 8 and 9 single A. Double A is 10 amd 11. The source did not have their facts straight. Goes to show other facts may be incorrect as well.
When I played football if my side was “pulled off” the field after being the victim of the speech of others, I would’ve taken that as punishment. I don’t think the other team should have forfeited the game either, rather in my opinion kick the offender out of the game. Kicking the whole team out would just breed resentment that could be used as justification for future accts. Throwing the offender out of the game would instill, there are ramifications to your actions. Keep hearing about taking responsibility for one’s actions, this seems to be an early teaching moment for there kids. If their parents won’t do it, then society will.
All these kids are just emulating the rap music they listen to.
Gee humboldt county being racist? A county that ran oof all the Chinese, and murdered the native Americans! Yeah humboldt county rednecks are racist as shit.
It was the kids on the team from Hoopa who were calling the biracial kids on the Eureka team a derogatory term.
Think about that…
Then think about how prevalent the word is in hip hop culture and in Hollywood movies.
Seems our youth are being conditioned to use the word through entertainment.
They ate absolutely being conditioned. Propoganda permeates all aspects of our lives.
Yes, that is the gravy in the whole story.
Natives are sometimes very predudiced or as I call it “skeptical of outsiders”..
perhaps they should be?
And the belief by the black community that they get to assault people who use historical slurs, or get to control the usage of words that have been re-invigorated and popularized in today’s youth culture exclusively by the black ghetto culture is just so much fresh herbs and spices.
i mean, who could have ever seen it coming?
Today, many black intellectuals ask for race consciousness and a racially aware society.
perhaps they don’t consider what that means when all groups adopt it
I worked in a Federal job most of my life. The two employees who used the term were either promoted to management, or carried around a pocket version of the New Testament.
I can’t tell if you mean they were promoted in spite of it or because of it. Or that it was meaningless either way.
timbo assumedly meant to erect the classic bugaboo of the white racist.
But it turns out that baby boomer trick doesn’t work in today’s social landscape as much as it used to.
timbo may need to update her stereotypes to the current statistics on violent crime.
perhaps 1950s “white husbands” were running amok punching black people, but hey, be honest, everybody knows what today’s rednecks look like.
at least update your stereotypes to today’s observable demographic reality.
that’s all I ask Timbo.
the old tricks used to gain social leverage don’t work anymore.
You say that like this is the only place with a horrible past . Can’t go back only forward !!! At least we never burned witches.
It’s true the “witches” weren’t burned alive as execution, but slaves revolting or planning to revolt or for crimes white people were simply hanged for, were burned alive The last judicial burning was in the 1830s in South Carolina.
White people who immigrated, moved, invade, whatever term you choose brought that racism here from somewhere else.
Bullshit. EVERY race and every culture has a history of being suspicious of, and biased towards, other races. White people didn’t bring that “racism here”. The people who came to this continent from Eurasia across the Bering Strait fought battles and enslaved or murdered people they held in contempt and were suspicious of. Amazes me that those on the Left believe the spoon-fed bullshit that racism is a “white thang”.
What was bullshit about my comment? Is it not true that Americans did indeed burn people to death “judicially’?
And is it also true that many of the people who “settled” in what is now Humboldt County were murderous thugs (looking at you Larabee, who after murdering his way through Humboldt then moved away just a handful of years later, heading back east and was late in life on the school board of some town in Kansas, a “respectable citizen” at the end. Of course his name is still found in a number of places in Humboldt.
The whataboutism you just posted…anything to deny that racism does still exist, often hiding beneath a veneer of respectability. I just find it extremely annoying that so many proponents of “Western civilization and superiority” aren’t the first to, you know, do better and learn from the mistakes in human history. But that’s just “woke” or some shit I guess.
I called bullshit on you saying “white people… brought racism here”. And I gave examples of contempt, suspicion and biases people from all cultures have towards others.
Do you think the people that settled here after they crossed the Bering Strait huddled in a happy mass and sang “Kumbaya” before the Europeans came and settled here?
You seem very touchy and defensive about this.
If discussing the issue is difficult for you based on your biases, then I understand the deflection you are making at this point in the conversation.
Imagine someone being touchy about being lumped in racially catagories as a “must be racists!” How dare they!
Yeah, that’s what I thought as well. All that “jumpin’ up and down” about racism everywhere. Not a shrink, but it looks like a lot of projection and unresolved internal conflict. Somewhere WAY Out There.
You are correct. My mixed racial neighborhood never blended and the racism was out loud. Attitudes toward each other prevented any healthy communication, Folks were stand offish, isolated from each other and there was just no way to get past the deeply held bigotry. Eye opening and heart breaking.
Y’all want credit for everything….. except racism
👀😒🧐
Really? If you want to be credible yourself, you need to lower your own blatant racism. Such hyper-reactive emotions will lead to a self inflicted stroke.
Not everything. But at least give us credit for creating indoor plumbing so you’re not living in your own filth and electricity so you can get on your device and call me a racist! 🤣
Not sure what your point is. Yes, racism and hate of anybody “different” exists throughout humanity. The idea is that kind and decent people RESIST evil wherever they find it. Whether it is four million Blacks held in bondage by eleven States or racial epithets hurled at a ball game, we must call out evil. We must resist evil. Excessively debating minutia seems irrelevant. “Methinks thou doth protest too much.”
Sounds like the Native Americans are the problem here
If that is the standard for a place to be racist. California is a racist as shit place: California Alien Land Law of 1913 was a law that banned aliens ineligible for citizenship, primarily Asian immigrants from owning land in the state
Are you racist if you do not consider yourself a racist? Those who are know they are.
A trick question? Trolling? If you propound racist ideals and structure your life around disdain and contempt for other groups based on physiology or cultural differences, you’re a racist whether you identify as such or not. Many qualify but refuse to recognize it because it feels uncomfortable. Nasty. But it sure does feel good, being instantly superior, so they run with it but deny it. Welcome to Humanity 1.00.
I still have contempt and disdain for some ideas and people who I think are evil, I just try not to make it based on gender, race, religious affiliation. Yes, I will fail in my lofty ambitions. Welcome to humanity 2.00
All these are repeating the words used or allowed to be used in their households.
IDK about that. The first person of my family I heard swear was myself. My parents were very determined that they not swear or drink in front of their children. But I’d learned it somewhere.
Point taken, but I agree with Bill L. That kids will most likely parrot words and attitudes they learn in the home. I am glad you did not. Kudos to your parents. One of my best friends in school and Boy Scouts started making racist comments in an off-hand spontaneous way. I realized that his dad, whom I knew, harbored classic White racist attitudes that I never heard at home. Dad and Mom taught by example and maybe another time I’ll talk about the Black Garbage Men episode with Pop that taught me all I ever needed to know about humanity. Thanks, man.
So hicks are emulating the outlaw country they listen to(and stole beats from hip hop&country music from black people)?
Noted✏️
Once again, white folks want credit for everything except racism.
Again, noted📝

Thanks for stereotyping! It’s almost always both accurate and helpful.
The ref should have shut the game down and sent the kids home.
Agreed 100%!
That they didn’t could mean they did not recognize it as a severe issue, or did not personally hear it or it could mean there was pressure not to do that too. We don’t know but reading the linked emails, it seems the board is making rules to stop it in the future. But no one seems to notice it.
They need to pull their heads out if they didn’t realize this was going on!
Trump’s America.
Obama’s America.
These players are getting slammed to the ground with their brains bouncing around repeatedly against their skulls at every single game, and they are worried about words?
(FYI I promise you, the Caucasians being called “cracker” -and they are– don’t run to their parents, the board or the press.)
AND, because I have a fetish for words, here is an extremely long explanation from 10y ago off reddit :
I was listening to the song “Nigga nigga nigga” by Gangsta Rap when the question “Why you call yourself a nigga” came up, but the answer “Cus I’m a motherfucking nigga” did not satisfy my curiosity.
Nigga did not only describe the lives loathed; it also described the lives loved.”
From the context of Israel’s article that is listed in the sources, “nigga” is a term that exists as a critique of the placement of black culture in broader society and discussion on the the self in that culture of oppression. There are obviously connotative differences between “nigger” and “nigga.” The closeness of pronunciation is still enough difference between. You may have heard of someone saying the “n-word” and another person asking, “with the hard r?” In terms of its understand in the academic community, it may be best to start with a quick discussion of African-American Vernacular English (AAVE). It is also known as Ebonics. According to John Rickford on linguistic society.org, AAVE grew out of African-American scholars desire to discuss Ebonics as a legitimate dialect of English instead as a derivative means of expression by an uneducated minority group. AAVE did enjoy broader discussion until the Oakland School Board wrote a resolution that states that AAVE was the primary language of their African-American students. One of the consistent aspect of Ebonics is in pronunciation. In the case of “nigga,” the final consonant in omitted. So one could argue that “nigga” is essentially the same was “nigger.” However, the use of connotative and contextual meaning of “nigger” and “nigga” are broadly different. People reacted differently when Michael Richards shouted “He’s a nigger!” than when Gangsta Rap performs the song. The fact that African-Americans have taken to using a term that has historically been used to deride, dehumanize,or demean them can be seen as a type of agency. “Nigger” and “nigga” are the same word but who speaks truly changed the connotative meaning. Historically, in mainstream culture in America, people usually see the term first used consistently among comedians like Richard Pryor and Paul Mooney. In an interview with Keith Olberman, Mooney states that while performing himself and writing for Pryor, one of their motivations for including “nigga” in the comedy was to “depower” the word. Later in the interview, he stated that he had stopped using the word. During this interview, he also states he started using the word in comedy for about 32 years. This interview was in 2006 during the Michael Richards fiasco at the Laugh Factory. So in mainstream culture, the usage of “nigga” likely begins in the early 1970s and was politically and critically motivated. The word itself exists in our cultural contexts and means different things to every single person. Tupac Shakur turned the word into an acronym with positive connotations, “Never Ignorant Getting Goals Accomplished.” The NAACP holds that the word in both its forms should not be used. It’s meaning is truly diverse across racial boundaries. The etymology of the two words come from Spanish “negro.” It was broadly accepted to refer to African-Americans as Negros until the mid-20th century. One of Fredrick Douglas most famous writings “The Meaning of July Fourth to the Negro” confirms the usage of the term among free blacks during the late antebellum period. W.E.B Dubois used both “negro” and “black” in his writing. So even going into the 20 early mid-20th century, the writings of educated African Americans do not use the word “nigga,” however that is to be expected. DuBois did have some writing about the meaning of “nigger” and other terms used to generalize the black community. He in fact preferred the word “negro”as it is inaccurate. He states that African-Americans are indeed brown. So that is another aspect to consider. There may not have been slaves calling each other “niggas” but they were likely using some term to broadly categorize people. However, only relying on the primary sources written by educated black men betrays several other groups within the black community like women and the uneducated, these voices and perspectives are likely lost to us so we can only speculatively. Black people were definitely been using the term before Richard Pryor became popular in the mainstream. As I stated previously, through Ebonics “nigga” is “nigger” interpreted through another culture. The two words are inexorably connected to one another in which the existence of one almost guarantees the existence of the other. I will conclude with a quote from Dubois.
“Your real work, my dear young man, does not lie with names. It is not a matter of changing them, losing them, or forgetting them. Names are nothing but little guideposts along the Way. The Way would be there and just as hard and just as long if there were no guideposts, but not quite as easily followed! Your real work as a Negro lies in two directions: First, to let the world know what there is fine and genuine about the Negro race. And secondly, to see that there is nothing about that race which is worth contempt; your contempt, my contempt; or the contempt of the wide, wide world.”
-W.E.B Dubois

Parse the language any way you want but in this case it was deliberately offensive and completely uncalled for. Immediate suspension was the right thing to do.
They self-parse the language!
Maxwell – at the outset of her 10 minute
rantinterview (0.30) – admits to using it herself ! 😂And at this point? 50 years into its colloquial use? These players are better served by addressing long term risk of TBI, not the slang banging from fellow players.
“(FYI I promise you, the Caucasians being called “cracker” -and they are– don’t run to their parents, the board or the press.)”
Because it isn’t taken as a meaningful threat. People rubbed raw with actual consequences tend to be more reactive. The issues are not the same and a small encroachment are not meaningful.
People are not fighting over a single word. They are fighting over the power to limit all the encroachments, real or not, in history.
Woul you feel the same if the children were calling other players “cracker” (or “crackah” if you prefer)?
Of course. Deliberately offensive language directed at an opposing player is the definition of unsportsmanlike conduct.
Redneck… just see the difference when it is used for group bonding or use tipo disparage.
“Immediate suspension was the right thing to do.”
Except the kid who got suspended was a target of the slurs — the kids using the slurs, their pathetic coaches and the idiot referee suffered no consequences.
Read again. “Although both teams were penalized for personal fouls, only the Eureka player was identified in a later report about the incident, and the infraction was later upgraded to a ‘flagrant foul’ without mention of the slur allegedly directed toward the player.” And the grandmother agreed with the ruling.
The real issue seems to be who gets to be recognized as the bigger victim. Sort of a very shabby goal.
Glad to see w.e.b. Dubois quoted in this ignorant hellscape
but you also quoted Reddit lol
youve all missed the point
RACISM HAS NEVER GONE AWAY AND IS ONLY BEING EMBOLDENED RIGHT NOW. The fact that white people think their opinions matter in a discussion about two oppressed peoples is rich. Sit this one out. Please.
What is happening is that CHILDREN ARE EMBODYING THE TERRIBLE EXAMPLES OUR SOCIETY HAS SET. RACISM AND BIGOTRY IS ALWAYS WRONG AND ECHOING THE TROPES OF WHITE SUPREMACY. In the immortal words of Samuel L Jackson in Do The Right Thing: WAKE UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP!!!! Crush white supremacy in all of its forms everyday. Bigotry never takes a day off
✊✌️
Too bad you apparently believe white supremacy is not crushed until no one but those doing the crushing get a say in it. You literally said just that. Hello? It’s not all about you and your opinion. And if objecting to that is racist, those are the rules you chose.
I did opine on your high volume remarks, but I notice that comments with a link sometimes just disappear – never to be seen again. 🧐
In short : because of DNA realities they quite possibly are distant cousins to the them they striving to crush.
The Hupa are more oppressed so they can say what they want.
Leave the Marxist language of oppressor/oppressed behind
I believe it was sarcasm, but I’m not sure.
All Ullr is doing is deploying the oppression hierarchy standard practiced by many identitarian leftists.
And using it where they didn’t intend it to be used, which smells like a home cooked meal to me.
Hey, Thats all we can do is highlight the absurdity
They may need to be gay or trans to hold the intersectional trump card.
The Native women for sure.
A word that should not be accepted by anyone at any time, let alone spoken by a few young kids playing football. A lot of this starts at home and by the kids hearing people say the word when they are out in public. I hope the punishment will help to change these kids but once it starts it is almost impossible to stop. I also think Eureka should have removed their players from the field and just left.
”I hope the punishment will help to change these kids.”
The only punishment went to a victim of the slurs.
Read again.
My son quit just the month before because they fired his two black coaches in front of the kids during practice! He’s 10 and refused to play for a league full of racism. No accountability! Something needs to change!!
Did the coaches get fired because they’re black??
Forfeit, game over.
True. If behavior is not improved, then indeed “game over” until it is. But there must be a reason the referees did not do that and this report should have asked.
I just read the comments. Feeling very sad. Not much progress by humanity.
These kids will figure it out. What they learn will guide them on their journey.
A lot of black, or partially black people end every sentence with “nigga”
If we start saying that they can’t do that, would that be discriminating against them?
Suppose Native Americans are not allowed to use the term. Is that for white people to say or do black people have to decide if it’s okay for natives to use nigga?
With the arbiter have to be 100% sub-Saharan African?
Hello? Parents? Are these YOUR kids using this language? Are you teaching your kids to hate? Is this the culture you want for kids under the age of 12? This is youth football for Pete’s sake. I hope you dwell in shame for this behavior in your kids. You should be banned from kid’s sports until you learn how to get along with others not of your racial background. I feel awful for the kids. ALL the kids. Come ON people! Sadly typical of a lot of folks in Humboldt County.
Social media. No need for parents.
This bullshit was happening in kids sports here decades ago. It’s still happening. And still no one responds appropriately. The parents and adults in power are at fault. Unfortunately, some of these kids will leave this island in the trees and will suffer from punched mouths when they attempt to act this way in the real world. I also think it’s rich that [edit], ferndale have all engaged in this behavior for decades. I’d be willing to bet some of that same ignorance is reflected in the stupid shit said in this comment section today and daily 👀
And here it is with a clear violation of Kym’s rules about no sneering distortions of place names. But then …
Probably “still no one responds appropriately” is because the demanded responses are themselves inappropriate.
*chirp*
What I want to know is, what kind of slurs, if any, that the Eureka team were slinging…???
Sounds like a teaching moment… there is a code of ethics that can be part of the curriculum. Get the teams together again, have a potluck with all concerned, and learn about good sportsmanship for the sake of fair play. https://www.afca.com/code-of-ethics
“r” they serious?
Why do little kids need travel leagues?
We used to play all sports on a vacant lot in the little town where I grew up. However many kids show up, pick 2 captains. Alternate picks until teams were set. Have fun. No officials necessary.
I am disappointed that RHBB decided to “hide” this article by listing it only in the headlines and not in the body of the newspaper.
Why?
It is alarming, though not shocking, that this is occurring.
Racism is rampant in this country.
It is in the homes that racist, misogynistic and homophobic attitudes are engendered and encouraged.
It is the parents who should be held accountable.
Regardless of the emphasis on a syllable, as in the colloquial use of the N word, it is offensive.
Think about it.
What do people want?
What do children want?
Don’t people want to FEEL included?
Does anyone want to feel discriminated against? Held out as separate? Different???
Slurs, labels make one feel stigmatized, different, excluded.
Would you want to feel that way?
How hard is it to convey this to even the youngest child?
Michael Frante, the musician, held a great performance at the Matteel a few years ago. He was fantastic.
One of his lyrics said, “Everybody wants the same things, don’t they? … Every body wants to work for a living… Everybody wants to be somebody’s friend.”
Incredible lyrics. Incredible music. Powerful message.
Hide? Do you mean that because this article is no longer on the “front page” of the home page which displays the last three posted news articles, that we have hidden this? No true. The Ref’s should have shut this down the minute the first racial remark was uttered. This is a no-brainer. They should have also said that if it was uttered again, the game would be forfeited. There is no place for this anywhere on the gridiron.
