Under the Oak, Autumn Waits

3 blacktail bucks near a large rock

As the days shorten and the air turns crisp, the final week of rifle deer season settles quietly over Northern California’s hills and valleys. For some, it’s a time of early mornings and long hikes—part of a rural tradition that connects generations to the land. For others, it’s simply another sign of autumn’s arrival, when the woods hum with life and watchful eyes turn toward the open slopes.

These blacktail bucks, photographed resting beneath an ancient oak, seem to embody the stillness of the season. Whether you hunt, hike, or simply admire from afar, this last stretch of October reminds us how closely our lives here are tied to the rhythms of the landscape—where both people and wildlife move in step with the turning year.

I agree. Perhaps the photographer will share a picture of the rest of the tree.

But you know that someone will want to kill the tree for the burl or just for fun.

Those are some handsome big boys all right, but behind them looks like the biggest burl ever born! What an oak tree.

So true.
I can feel the weather changing and it is bringing a frenzy to get all the things done before winter.
