Under the Oak, Autumn Waits

A magnificent trio of blacktail deer spotted in southern Trinity County in August 2025. [Photo submitted by a RHBB reader]
These blacktail bucks, photographed resting beneath an ancient oak, seem to embody the stillness of the season. Whether you hunt, hike, or simply admire from afar, this last stretch of October reminds us how closely our lives here are tied to the rhythms of the landscape—where both people and wildlife move in step with the turning year.

And where was this taken? Asking for a friend 😉
A loaded question?
Very early look at the Velvet probably in someone’s freezer already
LOL. Permission to use the photo came with the caveat that I wouldn’t give location details other than southern Trinity.
I just want to go find that tree.
It’s amazing.
I agree. Perhaps the photographer will share a picture of the rest of the tree.
But you know that someone will want to kill the tree for the burl or just for fun.
Those are some handsome big boys all right, but behind them looks like the biggest burl ever born! What an oak tree.
Yeah. I was wondering that too.
Looks like the butt of the tree to me!
Or the north end of a southbound pachyderm.
Lol
🤣
Goin way down south
Way down where I can be free
I was wondering who is that? 🙂
.
Were you wondering about the song? Hey Joe…
It took about ten shots to get em to show up at all!
Burl thieves grinding the glass from crushed crack pipes between their six remaining teeth after seeing this photo
So true.
I can feel the weather changing and it is bringing a frenzy to get all the things done before winter.
I too would be very happy to see some more pictures of this tree. This one picture is absolutely amazing. Thank y’all for sharing this.
