Over the weekend, Officers with the Eureka Police Department made multiple arrests for driving under the influence, removing impaired drivers from Eureka roadways and helping keep the community safe.
On June 13, 2026, at approximately 7:30 p.m., a Eureka Police Sergeant came upon a vehicle that had collided with a utility pole. The driver, identified as Danielle Matson, 25, of Fortuna, was contacted and subsequently arrested for driving under the influence.
Later that evening, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Officers responded to the 1700 block of Fourth Street for a report of a vehicle that had become stuck on a curb. The reporting party advised dispatch that the driver had been behaving erratically in a drive-thru, demanding food, and had struck the curb multiple times before becoming stranded. Officers contacted Daniel Miller, 37, of Eureka, who was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was taken into custody for driving under the influence.
Also, on June 13, Officers responded to the 1300 block of Fifth Street for a report of a driver asleep at the wheel. Upon arrival, Officers contacted Cody Hills, 35, of Eureka, who was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence.
On June 14, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m., an Officer observed a subject operating a motor scooter in the area of Wabash Avenue and A Street while exhibiting objective signs of impairment. The rider, identified as Eric Steward, 44, of Eureka, was contacted and detained. Following an investigation, Steward was arrested for operating a motor scooter while under the influence, possession of a controlled substance, and public intoxication.
Later that day, at approximately 6:15 p.m., Officers responded to the area of Clark Street and A Street for a report of a driver who appeared to be asleep behind the wheel. Officers contacted Gonzalo Martinez, 36, of Eureka, who was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence.
In 2025, the Eureka Police Department experienced a 26% increase in DUI arrests and a 21% increase in DUI-related collisions compared to 2024. Through the first five months of 2026, Eureka Police Officers have made 91 DUI arrests, compared to 93 during the same period in 2025.
The Eureka Police Department remains committed to reducing impaired driving and increasing roadway safety through proactive policing and targeted enforcement efforts. The arrests highlighted in this release were the result of officers actively patrolling the community, observing suspicious driving behavior, and responding to reports from concerned citizens. These efforts help identify and remove impaired drivers before they can cause serious injury or death.
Over the past year, EPD has received two grants that provide funding for dedicated DUI enforcement efforts, allowing officers additional opportunities to proactively identify and apprehend impaired drivers. EPD is hopeful these grants will

It sounds more like the impaired drivers proactively took themselves off the roadways, minus that dangerous scooter.
As opposed to the woman who tried to take out a utility pole? She was lucky it wasn’t a human.
I would love to know how a 30ish lb. scooter is more dangerous than a 4,000 lb. vehicle.
I’m most appalled about someone driving a scooter while impaired!! That’s so awful! They could’ve hurt someone. I mean what if they had run into someone’s house? /s
lowkey, the scooter one just seem like police targeting vulnerable members of the community for an easy paycheck. The others don’t seem to have been discovered by police “on patrol”. Sounds more like the police were called in all the situations that involved cars.
I had a feeling that the Eureka police got a grant for DUI enforcement. Doesn’t make sense why they’re so gun ho about getting DUIs and publishing the results. Probably grants from the crazy tee-totaler Karen’s at MADD.
A drunk driver is a drunk driver, even on a bike. They’re a danger to others, and themselves too, even on a bike.
Mainly just to themselves, but also most ppl need to be at a .15 BAC to actually start being impaired. However, alcoholics can get up to way higher BAC and still act sober.
honestly, I’m more concerned about drowsy drivers and elderly drivers. Drowsy driving and human error (caused by age) cause more fatal accidents a year than DUIs. If we really cared about people we would be making it harder to get a license and being more strict with who can and can’t drive based on age and medical conditions.
Source?
The nerve of them. Those busybody MADD people just won’t rest until everyone can drive home without being launched through a windshield by a DRUNK. Imagine being dedicated to preventing head-on collisions, mangled guardrails, shattered families, and emergency responders having to scrape what’s left of someone off the pavement at 2 a.m.
Like I told the other guy. DUI accidents are a drop in the bucket when it comes to fatal car accidents. A majority of car accidents are actually caused by drowsy drivers and/or human error (with old age as a contributing factor).
as for MADD. Their own founder left the organization because it had shifted away from just going after DUI drivers. Now it goes after alcohol consumption as a whole. Even the founder calls them thinly veiled neo-Prohibitionists. Then I leave you with this. Currently MADD has successfully lobbied for a bill that would require car manufacturers to put alcohol sensors in all new cars. If the car detects even a slight amount of alcohol, it will stop. Gonna add that .08 BaC is an arbitrary number and there’s no scientific evidence to back up it up. MADD is pushing for 0.00 BAC for drivers. Thats physically impossible. Our bodies naturally create alcohol. Plus that would mean no one could go out to a restaurant and have 1 drink with dinner. If they did, they would have to wait 6 hours to drive due to even be below a .03.
Literally everything you just said is factually wrong. .08 is backed by decades of medical science showing severe visual impairment. MADD supports a 0.05 limit, not 0.00. And one drink clears your system in about two hours not six! (Even for the smallest adult on the planet – a 100 lb woman- it only takes 3 hours.)
Why are you inventing fake science to defend driving buzzed?
Step one: Accept that you are powerless over the data, and your argument has become unmanageable. Trying to rewrite human anatomy, state laws, and basic arithmetic just to avoid calling an Uber. It’s time to surrender.
You sent a 20-year-old political opinion column, a senior driver article that shows fewer deaths than DUI stats, and an NBC article about a federal law literally created to stop drunk drivers.
You didn’t read a single thing you linked.
Did you even read the GHSA link? It says ~7,800 people over 65 died in crashes, mostly because they are physically fragile when hit. Senior citizens keeping their licenses doesn’t change the fact that drunk drivers are a higher statistical threat.
The NBC link? That entire law (‘Halt Drunk Driving Act’) was written because a drunk driver wiped out a whole family. MADD is backing it to stop 10,000+ ALCOHOL deaths a year. You dropped a link about preventing drunk driving to prove drunk driving isn’t a problem?
Federal data shows DUIs kill over 11,000 people a year, while drowsy driving logs under 1,000. Just take the L and abandon defending driving hammered.
It’s me giving troll energy.
It must be nice to be immortal!
I always thought the rule was that if you drank too much you should sleep in your car- not drive it of course. But you must take the keys out of the ignition! So don’t be passing out with your heater or music on- you can get a DUI just for being parked if those keys are in the ignition. Is this correct? Or is this an urban myth? I remembered it when I found myself escaping a bar in Eureka too buzzed to drive but taking refuge in my car until I sobered up- I basically hid my keys so there would be no debate if cops found me like that. Drunk but not totally stupid…
Is staring down at your cellphone while driving considered impaired driving – cause there is plenty of that!
I think it is its own category of illegal, and I wish PD/SO/CHP would get much more serious about enforcing it.
It’s easier to enforce DUIs because MADD has successfully lobbied for BAC level that isn’t backed up with science, more funding be dedicated to enforcing DUIs, and harder penalties to get out of (u less you’re rich and can throw money at the problem). Most repeat DUI offenders are rich enough to get bail and continue to drink and drive. Meanwhile a DUI could throw the average person into a life of homelessness due to not being able to get reliable transportation, not having a license, having to pay $5k+ in fines, losing their job or not able to find a job thanks to the criminal record of DUI. Adding to our homeless problem and wealth inequality. Ever wonder why repeat dui driver’s all seem to be celebrities or rich assholes? I mean there are countless politicians and celebrities that have killed ppl while drunk driving, but they’re still walking around and driving around free of punishment.
No. It’s considered distracted driving which causes more accidents than drunk drivers ironically.
Police are known to still arrest ppl for DUIs even if the engine is off.
So I’ve heard!
It’s unlikely that they drove sober, parked, then got drunk.
yes you need to take the keys out. but I think your attorney could win the battle if you are passed out in the passenger seat.
Thank you! I was hoping for some clarification on this. All I’ve heard are bar stories of unfortunate arrests. DUIs are expensive and life-changing. I have no sympathy for drunk drivers. But I do have some for the idiot who had his keys in the ignition while he passed out, never starting the engine so never actually driving drunk. Don’t do that- put your keys in your pocket dummy!
None of the people in the press release were arrested in a bar parking lot.
