[Update: Suspect in Custody] Person Reportedly Sets Themselves on Fire Inside Flamingo Hotel Room

Fire and medical personnel were dispatched to the Flamingo Hotel on Broadway late Thursday morning after smoke was reported coming from the building.

Humboldt Bay Fire responded to the report of smoke at the Eureka location just before 11:30 a.m. on October 9. Upon arrival, firefighters relayed to dispatch that they’d be “breaching the door.”* A short while later, an ambulance was requested, code 3 (lights and sirens), for a single patient.

According to scanner traffic, initial reports indicate an occupant had lit themselves on fire before the fire spread to the structure prior to being controlled.

Eureka Police is on scene along with fire personnel.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Update 11:49 a.m.: Our reporter Ryan Hutson is on scene and stating law enforcement activity is focused on a rear room where officers have been seen firing dozens of pepper balls through a window after breaking it.

Those at scene relayed there was “one victim.” At this time it is unknown if the victim is the sole occupant of the room and the same person reported to have lit themselves on fire. Update 1 p.m.:

The incident is ongoing as EPD officers attempt to speak with a subject inside the hotel room.

Our reporter, Ryan Hutson spoke with EPD’s Commander LaFrance who clarified that despite the original call stating a person had lit themselves on fire, those reports were incorrect. Currently, LaFrance explained, EPD has patrol officers, members of CSET (Community Safety Engagement Team) including crisis negotiators, CARE (Crisis Alternative Response Eureka) members, as well as behavioral health and mental health professionals. LaFrance described the subject as being “in crisis” as well as having some felony warrants.

Interview with EPD’s Public Information Officer, Laura Montagna, and Commander LaFrance:

Update 1:25 p.m.:

EPD officers have removed the suspect from the room. According to scanner traffic, the suspect is being examined by medical personnel.

I believe this is snark, and they are referring to self immolation that is sometimes associated with different Buddhist groups.

I hope they’re “breaching” the door rather than putting pants on it …

The article said they were “breeching” the door. Breech means the rear of something, or buttocks, or pants covering buttocks.
They meant to say “breaching” the door, which means to break open.

Yeah, I was hoping the same thing. A door wearing breeches wouldn’t be much use in this situation.

Well, this is Humboldt County we’re talking about here so the possibilities are more than merely abundant.

Horribly sad. Such mental imbalance to set oneself on fire. Not even as a public protest but in a room. Even worse if it was done to someone else.

Wait. You’re saying it is more acceptable to do this in public?

Absolutely. It allows you to show that you are willing to sacrifice your life as a protest against some wrong or other or in support of some cause.

Its not totally worthless or pointless; self immolating Buddhist monks were instrumental in bringing down the south Vietnamese government early in the war.

And besides, it’s easier to cleanup after.

Ain’t no party like a MidweekEurtweeka Party 🎉 🥳
The number of agencies and personnel for this guy’s mental break or whatever … Incredible. Your tax dollars at work.

A feel so very sorry and sad for the person who set themselves on fire. I don’t really know why the man was driven to try and commit suicide other than he must have given up all hope. I am grateful to our police for breaching the door when they arrived. If not, the man may have surely perished. If he survives, I hope he will receive the treatment he needs so badly.

People need to learn how to read. Nobody set themselves on fire.

Perhaps we don’t need more housing. What we do need are more rehab facilities and psychiatric wards.

Would be nice if reporter was state where the flamingo hotel is instead of saying name five times (police activity said many times, deploy said many times, pepper balls said 5 times). Guess what not everyone knows where that hotel is , surprise !! Also references to local business is ok however there are such things as addresses or blocks such as the “ 2400 block of broadway or whatever….BASIC JOURNALISM (who, what, when, where and how). Geeze.

The first two sentencess read “Fire and medical personnel were dispatched to the Flamingo Hotel on Broadway late Thursday morning after smoke was reported coming from the building.

Humboldt Bay Fire responded to the report of smoke at the Eureka location.

Broadway in Eureka is fairly specific. However, 4200 block of Broadway is the actual address. I’m sorry. Breaking news is tricky to get precisely.

This is one of the few actual news sites in Humboldt County. Otherwise, there is not really a media here, just outlets that run press releases or the journalistic equivalent.
