Man Describes Capture of Arson Suspect on State Route 36

A still from a video taken by Jonathan Kurtz shows the suspect apparently weilding a knife in his right hand and holding a bag with what appears to a lighter in left hand.

A still from a video taken by Jonathan Kurtz shows the suspect apparently wielding a knife in his right hand and holding a bag with what appears to a lighter in left hand.

Just before 8:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, August 12, emergency dispatchers received a report that the man suspected of starting two fires near Swains Flat on Sunday afternoon had been spotted walking westbound along Highway 36.

For two days, law enforcement officers and CAL FIRE investigators had been searching for the suspect after locals reported seeing him set Sunday’s fires.

This morning’s tip led to the suspect’s capture—but not by law enforcement.

Jeremy Kurtz, a Swains Flat/Bridgeville area resident for 25 years, said he received a call from an officer asking if he had heard that the suspect had been sighted near mile marker 18.6 on Highway 36. Kurtz said that CAL FIRE and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department had been “great” and since the fires had been “searching diligently out there for the guy.”

Kurtz, who has trained in close-quarters combat for many years, decided to try to locate the man.

“I took it upon myself to go down there and just apprehend and hold him until [authorities] showed up,” Kurtz said.

Video compiled by Ryan Hutson from imagery by Jeremy Kurtz, Jonathan Grant, and Trista Kurtz.

Kurtz spotted the suspect off the road near the Twin Bridges area west of Swains Flat, wearing a camouflage jacket and makeshift shoes fashioned from cut-up jeans tied to his feet.

“I had my wife in the truck,” Kurtz explained. “I told her, stay there. I took off running into the woods, and there he was. And so I yelled out to him. I said, ‘Hey, we’ve been looking for you,’ and it scared him. And he dropped the bag that he had… .”

Kurtz said that at first he tried to talk the suspect into walking to Highway 36 and giving his side of the story to law enforcement. “I pulled out my phone and I recorded the incident, and I told him to walk to the highway…[I]t was at that point, he pulled a knife on me… .”  [See the video].

Drawing on his training with North Coast Self Defense Academy and with Institute of Combat, Kurtz explained, “I had put myself in a position to where I was able to take down without putting myself in harm’s way. He still had his knife on him, and when I put him flat down on his face, I recognized where his knife positioning was, and it was at that moment I got my hand away from that and that’s when he launched like a missile into the sticker bush where I was not gonna go. I just chased around him on one of the trails right there and then caught up to him on the road.”

A passing motorist, later identified as Brian Ayala Iola, recognized the suspect, turned around, and helped block his path. Together, they detained him, with Ayala Iola providing a rope to secure the man until CAL FIRE and law enforcement arrived.

Jonathan Grant, another local, stopped by to help ensure the scene remained safe until officials took custody.

The citizens hogtied the suspect with hay string and a ratchet strap.

By 8:46 a.m., CAL FIRE was confirmed over the scanner that one person was in custody. Kurtz said that the suspect’s belongings including the bag that he dropped earlier was located and sent with him as he was booked into jail.

“I’m just happy that our neighborhood doesn’t have to worry every night about fires and stuff,” Kurtz said.

He added, “I find it kind of odd myself that I would be so calm this whole situation. It does feel kind of strange. But, I mean, honestly, that’s what…me and so many of my really close friends have trained for our whole lives to be able to hold down our community and protect the ones we love.”

The suspect’s identity and potential charges have not yet been released by authorities.

Good job guys you are hero’s ! That scumbag is very lucky it was you and not someone untrained, most people would have just shot him when he pulled the knife rather than risk injury or death for good reason but the fallout would be a pain in the ass with lawyers and court bs. THANK YOU

The use of cut up denim as shoes suggests mental illness to me. Arson is a special breed of evil.

But if it’s mental illness, it can’t be evil. Rather, it’s a get-out-of-jail-free card.

Nicely put! In fact it is exceedingly rare to find an individual who has warped their perception of reality enough for them to really feel that evil is good. Most of the interviews given by prolific offenders of the most heinous types indicate that they self report an awareness of the wrong and evil nature of their offenses. However there are plenty of circumstances that would allow one to view their actions through a prism of delusion, you often hear of themes of cloaked evil symbolism, perhaps alien invasion or maybe 60 years ago commie plots, but in the right framework of incorrect assumptions and strong self affirming faith ( I avoided religious symbol references but these are in fact the most common ) the delusional fool ‘hero’ types can go on destructive sprees to save or redeem humanity in one way or another. This is perhaps the ultimate form of dangerous delusion.

Jeramy is one of our wonderful community members that’s always helping out. He did some great cleaning up a Redwood house Road when it needed it when we were trying to get through and it was getting really rough. We truly have some wonderful community members out here in Bridgeville. I thank them all for what they’ve done by getting this guy. I know I’m one of the many neighbors that will sleep better tonight.

Interesting…
Tried to reply
re: “Mental Illness”
debate with ‘TBT/M’.
It states:
“Replies to messages that are not approved are not allowed.”
Never saw that before.
Anyway..
here’s my 2cents,
on the question of whether
a person can suffer mental
illness, and still be
said to know “right from wrong.”
…..
Clark v. Arizona, 548 U.S. 735 (2006)

  • Facts & Mental Illness: Eric Clark was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and believed that aliens had invaded his town. He shot and killed a police officer under these delusions. A defense psychiatrist argued Clark was incapable of understanding right from wrong at the time of the shooting.en.wikipedia.org+2law.cornell.edu+2
  • State’s Rebuttal: The prosecution’s psychiatric expert maintained that, despite his schizophrenia, Clark appreciated the wrongfulness of his conduct before and after the incident—evidenced by his actions such as luring the officer, evading capture, and hiding the gun.supreme.justia.com+1
  • Outcome: The U.S. Supreme Court upheld Clark’s conviction, affirming that since he knew right from wrong, he did not qualify under Arizona’s insanity defense.

The “mentally ill” man who shot Reagan spent decades in a locked mental facility. Mental illness does not preclude punishment

To be fair to lady justice that punishment is in fact deemed treatment, as such its goals are broader tha a simple prisons. This causes much confusion, as many are deemed unable to stand trial due to a lack of an ability to frame the behavior properly to even punish them, the goal of their treatment is often to make them fit to stand trial, which they then do.

That would have been OK, too. Drop the £¥§>¥€£ KNIFE! Or, preferably, a quart of high-test bear spray. Some well-meaning people just can’t believe that a percentage of violent people just ain’t gonna quit. Do this, do that, pray, moan, cry, but don’t hurt the perp ever in any way whatsoever. We don’t live in that world.

Oh that made my day. Good guys taking down the bad guy is as American as apple pie and I admit to a great deal of pleasure seeing this event. Guys like that would be locked down for good if we had mental health facilities. Instead, our corrections officers have to deal with this nut. And maybe teach him to pull up his damned pants. Argh.

This story beckons Hank William’s song, ” Country Boy Will Survive”. Sometimes Law Enforcement needs help.

“I can plough a field all day long,
I can catch catfish from dusk il dawn.
We can make whiskey and our own smoke too.
Ain’t too many things these ol boys can’t do.
We grow good ol tomatoes and home made wine.
A country boy can survive, country folks can survive.

We’re from California and North Alabam,
And little towns all across this land.
We can skin a buck and run a trotline,
A country boy can survive, country folks can survive”.

I don’t see a crime here what I do see is a homeless veteran and a guy taking law into his own hands
Why the guy that hog tired him isn’t in jail for assault and battery
The man should of called the police when he spotted him
Not do what he done and the fact he is a digital creator and post videos makes him more likely to get viewers the fact he made a selfee As a former military MP

Fending off an attack from a knife isn’t assault, it’s self defense. And trailing a malefactor for an hour or so while awaiting police response to a 911 call is liable to get you attacked.
