Meet Dr. Butch Ware: The Green Party’s Rebrand Campaign for California Governor

Following the town hall event, Ware poses for a photo with social justice activist Gihan Hayden and Sarai Bordeaux, Eureka’s Poet Laureate of 2025/26.
In the bustling atmosphere of Arcata’s North Country Fair, as community members of all stripes enjoyed art, music and street food galore, we sat down with Dr. Butch Ware, who explained how he hopes to usher in a reimagining of California’s political landscape. Aiming to be seated in a “Green Governor’s mansion,” Dr. Ware says he brings a fresh take on Green Party ideas to the table, working to rebrand the Green Party as a “revolutionary” alternative to either main party in California’s gubernatorial race.
Ware sets himself apart from other candidates and traditional political narratives, saying he intends to make efforts to reach voters in each corner of the state. While in Arcata for a town hall event a day earlier, Ware spent roughly 2 hours taking questions from the audience on a range of subjects. Describing himself unabashedly as the “only” third-party option with a chance of challenging the leading Democrat in the race when the dust settles, he emphasized a vision for grassroots politics where service and awareness are instrumental.
When questioned about critiques of the Green Party’s ability to win or even compete meaningfully in the governor’s race, Ware admitted that the criticism of the Green Party was “fair” while agreeing that the party had previously failed to offer competitive candidates for state level seats.
Asked if he thought the Green Party could be described accurately as “impotent” – a term he used during the town hall to describe Democrats – he said as to the Greens, “This is a party that has been happy to be on the field, and has not been playing to win.” In regard to criticisms of previous Green Party efforts, Ware said, “ I don’t make excuses,” saying that the “proof of the pudding is in the eating.”
A Fresh Green Approach
Sitting down with Dr. Ware amidst the festival goers and lively background, we asked a number of questions about his strategy on running as a Green Party Candidate, his political beliefs, inspirations and motivations for running on the Green Party ticket. Ware was open in his critique of the Democratic party, as much or more so than he was of Republican party leadership, commenting on the Bernie Sanders brand of populism when asked to explain his vision for bringing traditional Democrat or Republican voters and into the Green Party fold.
Ware explained that he recognizes value in the Bernie Sanders model of grassroots fundraising with a populist message, but wants to apply Green Party politics to the ‘Berniecrat’ brand of populism.
Ware argues that Bernie Sanders provided a roadmap for progressive populist politics, but was ultimately constrained by the Democratic Party’s corporate wing, saying that in his estimation, “Bernie Sanders in 2016 was forced into submission by the corporate wing of the party… .” He noted that “many people became Green Party members in 2016 on the day that Bernie Sanders came into that room and told all of those Bernie delegates that he was giving them all to Hillary.”
Beyond that, Ware said that he believes the Democrats have “abandoned white working-class voters,” he says, calling out the party for dismissing Trump supporters specifically, while asserting that Trump’s base were dismissed by Democratic politicians as “simply racist”. He argued that a “Team Blue versus Team Red” narrative was not helpful to voters, but he asserted, was effectively distracting from issues that voters cared about on both sides of the aisle. Ware told us, “The Democrats have abandoned white working class voters since the Bill Clinton era. I mean, they threw white working class voters under the bus, and then they tried to absolve themselves for the responsibility of NAFTA by calling all Trump voters racist.”

Ware described where his political views come from, saying that his foundation of political understanding rests in the teachings of civil rights era leaders like Malcom X and Stokely Carmichael – both credited as being critical thought leaders in the development of the Black Power movement of the 1970’s.
Ware told us that according to the political ideology of Carmichael, who later identified as Kwame Ture after converting to Islam and helped mold the principles of the Black Panther Party, “Revolutionaries don’t just mobilize around issues. Revolutionaries organize against systems.” Ware, a professor of history, was open about channeling the teachings of Ture, and described his campaign as more than building up to an election– calling his efforts part of a larger social movement for change in politics. “We’re offering the Green Party as a Liberation Party… ,” he said, adding that the term “revolution” was not in regard to violence, but referred to a changing of position. Ware explained, “Revolution just means a turning of a wheel. It means that which is at the bottom comes up to the top,” referencing voters who feel they have been overlooked by either of the two leading parties – Democrat or Republican.
Taking lessons from political leaders of the late 60’s and 70’s, and leaning into the roots of his “impoverished” upbringing, Ware says he would not have chosen this path, but that he was “called to service” and is prepared to take the campaign for California Governor as far as the voters will carry it.
A Platform for Reform
Centering housing, healthcare and homelessness issues as his top three platform issues, Ware says that the people of California have asked for better, and deserve to have security in housing and healthcare as priorities. “You should not always go bankrupt because of a cancer diagnosis,” he stated when asked about his platform for Governor. “Health care companies should not take 35 cents off of every dollar just to deny you care,” he said, while noting that both of the “red and blue teams” have let California voters down. His universal single-payer plan aims to eliminate corporate interference in medical treatment, he explained, noting that his campaign only takes donations from “real people” and does not accept any corporate funding.
“We do not take any corporate donations,” he said, when asked what type of funding sources his campaign relies on. “We do not take any PAC donations. Every donation has to come from a human being with a name,” he explains, positioning himself as a grassroots organizing candidate, with a funding model which holds him accountable only to “the people,” he said.
On housing issues and homelessness, Ware notes that Governor Gavin Newsom has come under scrutiny for what some have called “sweetheart deals” to private contractors. “We need to get private equity firms out of the real estate industry. We’re going to tax them so hard they’ll want to sell to the state,” he said, explaining that his proposed solution involves state-operated social housing modeled after Vienna‘s successful approach.
When asked for his thoughts as to California’s many Native tribes and their community needs specifically, Ware noted that his campaign believes in Native American communities achieving justice on a variety of issues from Salmon and water flow restoration to the ongoing struggles related to missing persons cases. He replied, “We believe in ‘land back‘,” adding, “we believe in restorative justice for indigenous communities.”
Ware said during the Green Party sponsored town hall event, that he “plans to pull exactly zero punches” when discussing current political parties. “Team Blue and Team Red are now militarized fascist parties,” he told us during the direct interview at the Plaza, echoing some of the rhetoric used in the 3-hour town hall that was held the evening prior, at Cal Poly Humboldt. “One comes with a cross,” he said, “the other with a rainbow flag– but their corporate politics are the same.”
A Personal Investment in Social Justice
His personal story drives his political vision, as he explains it, beginning with humble roots in Washington, DC. “When I’m talking about the homelessness crisis, it’s something I’ve experienced personally in my own life,” explained Ware.
Saying he has been inspired by the teachings of Islam and of Malcolm X, he made it clear that he sees his candidacy as part of a larger liberation struggle. Ware frequently referenced civil rights era political dissidents and leaders of the Black Liberation movement of the time, as his inspirations.

Dr. Butch Ware, after the 3-hour marathon town hall, in Arcata September 19.
Asked what were three things he wanted voters to know about him before going to the polls, he offered: a commitment building up the Green Party base, notes on his personal history of economic hardships, and that he is not a politician by trade.
Being asked to only offer up three points that he would want to convey, he elaborated on each:
First, he explained his stance on social justice, and underscored that this was not his first political rodeo. “I have been an organizer and an activist and an educator for my whole life,” Ware said, adding, “and I never considered electoral politics until I was asked to run for vice president of the United States in the 2024 election by Dr. Jill Stein.” Asserting that this “is not the life I would have chosen for myself,” Ware conceded that he was not one to reject a “call to service” in politics. He explained, “I have come to believe that we need a fundamental intervention in our politics. So I am in this thing to win this thing, after getting tagged into a fight, I do not leave the fight until the other side goes down.”
Second, Ware described what he wanted folks to know about his personal background, telling us, “My journey started really in abject poverty. I am a son of a locksmith with a sixth grade education and teenage mom.” Offering a flashback to his mother’s struggle and his difficult childhood, Ware added, “My mom was 15 years old pregnant with me, and told by her high school guidance counselor to abort the child, because she was pregnant by a black man. That was 1973 in Washington, DC, and I grew up in deep poverty for the first 10 plus years of my life.” Clarifying the extent of his personal experience with housing insecurity, he noted candidly, “When I’m talking about homelessness crisis, it’s something that I’ve experienced personally in my own life.”
And third on the list, Ware wanted to differentiate himself from career politicians and from either mainstream party. “I’m not a cardboard cutout politician,” he stated. “And if you follow me on any of our social media platforms, or go to ButchWare4gov.com you’re going to see… an ordinary guy,” and he conceded, “yes, with a lot of education and a PhD, and who’s been doing a lot of things, but ultimately, I’m just trying to serve ordinary working people, because I come from an ordinary working class background.”
The full September 20 interview with Dr. Butch Ware covers all of the questions detailed in this reporting, and much more.
As California approaches its gubernatorial election, Dr. Butch Ware claims to offer a reimagined Green alternative to traditional political narratives— a campaign promising systemic change from the ground up, says Ware.
The Green gubernatorial candidate emphasized his solidarity with marginalized communities and voters across the state, promising to be “a governor for all Californians.” As he sat surrounded by cultural art and music festivities, between crafts and information booths, at the Arcata Plaza, Dr. Ware added, “Free Palestine, free California, free the United States of America from fascism and tyranny,” reflecting the unconventional spirit of his Green Party campaign.

Yes, thanks for the interview.
It explains why the Green Party keeps sliding further into oblivion.

Beautifully stated, thank you.
It’s an interesting time in politics right now. Today’s NYT features articles on the evolution of #crunchymoms (who wear hand knit sweaters, eat locally grown organic food and, well, are diverse in their political views) and how Marjorie Taylor Green represents a split in the red base, winning respect from some of those on the left. A far cry from the Jim Hightower statement of yore ’There’s nothing in the middle of the road but a yellow stripe and dead armadillos.”
MTG middle of the road?
She’s not even close to the fog line!
IMHO: Political thought forms a near circle. (Horseshoe Theory)
Communists and Facists meet on the far side. You can read about it on Wikipedia.
Stalin, Mao = Hitler, Mussolini
Newsom, Harris = Trump, Vance.
Go figure.
Your luck is running out…
It’s not a near circle or horseshoe — the extreme right and left come full circle.
IMHO: Yup.
Ever thought of just going feral, living off the land, picking mushrooms with the seasons, fishing, collecting edible herbs, living on a beach somewhere 2,000 miles plus west of here, and forgetting all about this? I think that is probably a goal to strive for as this past 25 years and current political paradigm is a Hamster Wheel of pure stupidity. It is getting really frickin old. It’s time to cut the cords and break free. Screw it. Die with your boots/flip flops on @nd boardshorts at least covering the nads, no matter what the bougies claim. Yep. Fly high and experience the freedom of being human. Eff em all.
Yes. They meet at Crazytown.

Well, a megalomaniac narcissist Nazi like Trump, was once a wild card…
Nobody wants Social Change, and the wealthy don’t support a Jihad…
We want lower taxes and the illegal aliens to leave…
And Socialized Medicine will never exist in this country because the Medical Machine makes too much money off of bleeding the masses…
With tens of thousands of murders per year in the US and hundreds of thousands of homeless, I want social change.
I also want higher taxes on the ultra-wealthy and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who have not committed crimes since arriving.
And the only reason we don’t have universal single-payer healthcare is because people are stuck choosing between two parties- neither of which embrace universal single-payer healthcare.
It’s good to see the Green Party embracing wider array of issues.
Environmental protection is important, but so are these other issues.
Now, if only we had a method of choosing electors that allowed third parties a seat at the table.
The US has an intentional homicide rate that is about a fourth of Mexico’s and Canada has a rate of about a third. What we need is more immigrants from Canada.
BTW Jamaica has a homicide rate that is 8 times that of the US and they have a parliamentary system. As does South Africa, Lesotho, Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia, etc all with worse homicide rates. On the other hand, the most countries with low homicide rates are Asian and European. And countries under Islamic law.
And no, the lack of multiple parties is not the problem with health care either. Looking for a Deus Ex Machina solution for social ills is futile. An honest, unified populace can make any system work. A dissatisfied, disunited populace can screw up any syst.

Cause and effect? Nope. Coincidence only.
Dang! I disagree with pretty much everything you post on here but….I actually agree with everything you just said! Politics is funny I guess LOL! I wish for more parties, more alternative discussion but since the Citizens United decision we are pretty much stuck with revolution in the streets as our best solution….Hope you have courage and valor to back up the future you envision!
It’s tough to have multi-party representation in a winner-take-all system.
Yep, getting money out of politics is a start, but that just tends to shift loyalties from corporate donors to the party machine.
Ranked choice voting might bring a bit more diversity of opinion.
But a real solution is likely to take a Constitutional amendment and a rewriting of some pretty foundational elements of how we do things.
Biggest obstacle to that is that the corporate and political powers that control things today would have to agree to changes that would diminish their powers.
Good luck getting that to happen.
Hello? Each district votes for which representative they choose. There is no “winner take all” party and no Constitutional Amendment is needed to do it. No one makes people vote for one or the other. They do it to themselves. One problem is the sheer volume of the US population which makes huge blocks of voters vying for a limited number of seats. The US actually is in the top 25 for number of seats available.
If there really was a politician or his campaign willing to go out, knock on doors, hold rallies, marches, etc to make his election personal, there is a good chance he could win. It would be hard, hardvwork. But the unwillingness to meet the population versus meeting the few monied who purchase advertising and endorsements is strong. It’s been decades since I actually met any candidate for any office in person. Or even had a campaign knock on my door. Stuff my mailbox with garbage? That’s what I get from politicians only in the weeks before an election.

Remember when Obama was elected largely on the promise of healthcare for all? Remember when he betrayed the American people for his corporate overlords? I do.
Me too.
It still amazes me that some people continue to refer to him as some sort of Left-wing liberal.
Who can forget?
And betrayal is exactly the right word.
But he served his overlords exceptionally well.
Did just what he was put in power to do.
Every politician has an agenda of things that compete very successfully under the idea of public good. And ACA, created when the Presidency and the Legislative Branch were in the same party, is like the old book that described a mutt as half airedale and half retriever and the worse half of both.
“Nobody can change this state in 4-8 years…”
I can change this state? Maybe I should enter the arena. 🤔
Nobody’s perfect!!
Nobody is everybody’s favorite!!
Nobody works harder for the people!!
🤣
You can be my campaign manager.
Nobody is in Washington DC working for you right now! Nobody should have too much power!
More unfocused platitudes for the masses.
Platitudes. Exactly what I thought when I read the first two paragraphs. Could only read a bit more.
He should help dilute the Demonic party.
Bernie helped stir up some shit and the DEMs needed that! We all got to see how openly Hilary and Debra Wasserman embraced their own form of corporate fascism. It was illuminating!
This guy has no chance to even get heard. Green Party is a magnet for crazies. Remember when Arcata’s ALL 5 council members were Green Party? Immediately many new laws were passed to control social behavior. Because it was good for us and they cared so much. LOL! I was Green until then and have since never trusted those socialist fascists- yes it’s a weird hybrid but it exists. Never trust a Green. Never trust a DEM. Rarely trust a REP….
Anything is better than Gavin…
Yeah, I’m not really into Gavin Newsom’s platform of “Election Rigging”, either…
“The Green gubernatorial candidate emphasized his solidarity with marginalized communities and voters across the state, promising to be “a governor for all Californians.””
Yeah, right. No, yeah, left of left. It is impossible to to be solidly with the margins of the body politic and simultaneously be with all.
For all. Not necessarily with all.
Those on the Right do not need to agree with Left-wing policies.
But Left-wing policies will benefit Right-wing voters as well.
Benefit the right? Not so anyone would notice. In fact it seems that the only part conservative ideas play among the left is as a whipping boy.

Note to Butch Ware,If you want the working class white Trump voters, first off ,they’re not all white. Read and study the voter demographics. Its the class of people who work in blue collar jobs, threatened by over regulation in their livelihoods, over taxed and living under California caused inflation stemming from high fuel costs due to regulations and taxes. This is why Trump got a huge Hispanic vote and increased African American vote. Then there’s the social issues. Talk to a working class family about men playing woman’s sports or boys playing girls sports. or the education system condoning it. Violent crime and the push to take away the means for working class people to defend their families.A so called assault rifle is the most effective means to counter this and protect your home. Yes healthcare costs are a huge thing but how do you pay for it without doubling down on the cost to everyone. Especially when illegal aliens are accessing it. Trumpism is the current solution aka,Populist/Nationalism. What do you propose to add to this movement ?
Pearls before swine, Zach …
Maybe, but the Dems made assumptions and ignored them and look what happened. Never underestimate large voting blocks.
The Dems didn’t even let democracy work within their own party for the presidential nomination …
Their crocodile tears over free speech are laughable. They are trouncing the Constitution rapidly and have everyone that votes for them gaslit to the extreme thanks to the original NDAA. Hope and change my rear end!
Doesn’t matter the whole right/left paradigm is a red herring to keep us from getting answers the truly important questions like: why is Congress laundering our tax dollars? And that’s just a small warm up!
Got to keep trying. I was once like swine
Are you talking Pearl neckless?? That fits your talk!!
If they can suck enough votes away from the Democrats we might end up with a two party state again
The voters who elected a State Democrat leadership that is willing to do a special election to “temporarily suspend” a part of the State Constitution to damage Trump and is a subdivision of the National Democratic Party who tried to hide the dementia of their candidate solely because they thought he had the best chance to defeat Trump are not going to risk throwing any of their votes on a sure loser.

I like most of what I’ve read in this story, but I don’t think it’s going to work. First of all, everyone except the small percentage of people who actually identify as socialists is absolutely terrified of “socialism,” whatever that is. (When you read about the history of “socialism” you discover that socialist groups historically spent most of their energy fighting over that definition and who was the most socialististic socialist. A friend of mine defined it as “someone who believes the government should help people,” by which almost everybody is a socialist, even you trolls, if you identify as “people”. Others define it as the devil’s work. But I digress.) I hear a lot of idealist language, lots to yell “Right on” for, but no plans for accomplishment. This is exactly what I dislike about Newsom (besides his hair) — blah blah blah blah — lots of great promises, no follow-through. Mr. Ware is extremely eloquent and I dig it, but I don’t hear about any methods as to how to achieve his ideals. So essentially he’s just stealing energy away from finding those solutions. And the candidate you don’t want will win the election.

Someone who knows what they are doing would run for the independent party . Americans love that word.
