Charges Recommended Against Protester After October Altercation in Arcata, CCTV Footage Obtained

Redheaded Blackbelt, through a Public Records Act request, has obtained CCTV footage of an incident that sparked outrage within the community last October. Yesterday, Cal Poly announced that after a three month investigation, they have recommended that charges be filed against Gigi Hyden, a pro Palestinian protester who was involved in a clash with a College of the Redwoods baseball player in Arcata.

Zoomed-in version of the CCTV footage

Last fall, on October 28, the tensions around the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict reached Humboldt County after a pro-Palestinian protest on the Arcata Plaza. The troubling situation occurred when Gigi Hyden and her friend, two women leaving the protest, claimed a political discussion-turned-argument with members of the College of the Redwoods (CR) baseball team, escalated to assault, both by vehicle and later at the hands of the team’s assistant coach.

Though none of the CR coaching staff or players spoke with us at the time of the original report, CR’s spokesperson, Molly Blakemore, countered these claims, citing CCTV footage that she said supported the athletes’ account that Hyden vandalized a player’s vehicle, and the women were not assaulted.

Hyden, a protester, in an interview with Redheaded Blackbelt in October, claimed the encounter with a CR baseball player escalated, involving what she called racist remarks about Palestinians. CR’s Assistant Baseball Coach, Brian Barreto, allegedly arrived during the verbal exchange, accusing the women of being instigators, before telling the players to leave and then leaving in his own vehicle. The confrontation, Hyden said, ended with one of the players allegedly hitting her with his car.

Slow motion and zoomed in version of the CCTV footage

The women’s version of the events included an assault by Barreto who they claimed came back to the scene of the incident after a player called him, where he allegedly ran up to Hyden’s friend, body-checked her, and verbally abused them. CR asserted that Barreto never physically touched the women, attempting to prevent them from leaving to avoid charges of destruction of property.

Amid conflicting accounts, the University Police Department (UPD) conducted an investigation. In a statement issued on February 9, 2024, by Aileen Yoo, CPH’s Director of News and Information, the UPD’s findings, contradicted Hyden’s allegations. Additionally, UPD concluded that the evidence shows Hyden vandalizing the student’s vehicle and blocking his exit, leading UPD to recommend that charges be filed. Yoo stated via text message, “UPD has recommended charges of vandalism, false imprisonment, and making a false police report, and the case has been referred to the District Attorney.”

Redheaded Blackbelt reached out to the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office for comment, however, it was at the close of business on Friday. Our requests to CR’s coaching staff and information personnel, late Friday afternoon, have yet to be returned.

We also reached out to Gigi Hyden for comment after UPD issued the statement regarding the case being forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office. Hyden stated that after her initial phone interview with UPD, in which they stated that they’d inform her if charges were being filed, she has had no contact with UPD except to forward ER records to the department. Hyden stated that she learned about the UPD’s findings by reading about it on Lost Coast Outpost. She had no further comments.

Notably, Redheaded Blackbelt has sought UPD evidence in this case through the use of Public Records Act requests since October 30, 2023. We continue to request the additional footage of the subsequent event reportedly filmed by CR students of the encounter between the protestors and Assistant Coach Barreto. As of Friday, February 9, 2024, UPD has denied our request for those videos and access to the related documents citing the following Govt. Codes:

  • Law Enforcement Records.  Disclosure of certain law enforcement records that would endanger the safety of a person involved in an investigation or would endanger the successful completion of the investigation or a related investigation.  Cal. Govt. Code §§7923.600, 7923.615(a)(1).
  • Balancing Test. Records where the public interest against disclosure outweighs the public interest in disclosure. Cal. Govt. Code §7922.000.
We encourage anyone in possession of these videos to reach out to us at [email protected].
Below is the CCTV footage in its entirety as shared from UPD:

Blocking a roadway with a protest sign and kicking a vehicle in the hood is incredibly stupid and dangerous. It warrants retaliation by the driver, to protect their expensive investments, from unhinged protesters.

Have you ever tried to break a windshield with your fist? You’ll break your hand in the attempt.

Surely you’ve seen drunk, young, and dumb folks crack a windshield with a butt cheek or knee before on accident? I think punching a window with your knuckles is a good way to hurt your hand but a ‘hammer strike’ with the meaty bottom of your fist could easily cobweb a window.

No, retaliation is not “warranted” – there’s no law or rule that authorizes retaliatory violence if/when someone is victimized in some way, as alleged here. Vigilante justice is not a thing that CA law allows for, but I suppose that may not stop someone from having that type of reaction after being on the receiving end of violence.

A good demonstration of why it’s important to be on your best behavior if you appoint yourself to be a representative for some cause. Reading these comments, I’d day she fell right into a behavior trap that may be undermining her position. Because in reality, those ball players ain’t gonna change Netanyahu’s agenda. Israel may be committing war crimes, but getting in fights with your fellow citizen doesn’t further that point.

those kids handled that really well ,I have worked very hard for 25 years to afford a nice vehicle and would have definitely been in a fight as soon as she touched it.Great job keeping your cool under those circumstances And it should be a Hate crime to make a false hate crime report against a group of white ,black, brown people. That man and his vehicle was singled out because he was a white male ,then abused and accused of what his accuser was doing. If i blocked her In a parking lot ,kicking her car yelling release the hostages and free Isreal I would already be in jail for a hate crime.

Like almost everything in the real world, nothing is as black or white as political advocacy would make it. Both Islam and Judaism are the side shows in this war. Groups, formed out of instinctual human nature, are always suspicious of other groups. They load up their own emotions and fears on both sides of this war. As if there were not enough without it. So many Americans want to load up their current one sided view of American racial history on the conflict too.
I admit the cultural denigrating of women in so many Islamic countries and their willingness to promote terrorism around the world along with the disgusting behavior of Palestinians in murdering and taking children hostage, raping women to death in the 10/7 has made it very hard to not be disgusted with Americans here calling themselves Pro Palestinian. It’s one thing to want killing of civilians to stop. To want better national behavior of Israel. It’s totally another thing to justify such ugliness as 10/7 as a valid response because of Israel’s refusal to protect Palestinian’s civil rights. If Jewish settler violence is ugly, Palestinians behavior is equally bad. They gain sympathy only because they are losers and western society principles has a thing about kick a person when they are down. Americans should not fool themselves that Palestinians have any such qualms. We should have qualms about loading so much of our own baggage onto this case too.

What has happened to 15 year old Layan Hamadeh, who “disappeared ” after calling for help, at the hands of the IDF, as her 5 year old relative, Hind Rajah, then picked up the phone, and was then murdered, also by the IDF, along with the paramedics in an ambulance that were attempting to rescue them, the ambulance burned to it’s shell and cinders.

It is you that are flipping the narrative…

Israel is now the collective monster, take a bow, all you immoral, militant, murderous sickos.

Your haughty self righteousness is nauseatingly hypocritical and lacks even the tiniest shred of moral self awareness.

Protesting in Arcata, or debating on this forum is worthless if you are just signaling to your own tribe. If you have a compelling argument you might change someone’s mind on the merits. This is why Deputy DA Reese may have wanted to be a little more circumspect in his decision to counter protest at work. The DA may have to make adjustments in who and how they decide to prosecute this case since Reese has demonstrated his bias. But at least we know where he stands, but I bet it’s a pain in the ass for the DA.

Right. It’s not as if the Palestinian civilians can’t pile into their cars and drive with their full gas tanks on their perfectly usable freeways to someplace away from Rafah.

They may be starving and sick, their elderly kinfolk and children may be bleeding from wounds that have not been treated with antibiotics, they may be dazed and confused by the repeated IDF orders to evacuate the places where they were and go to places where they can live in “safety” only to be bombed there, but that is no excuse for not moving once again to promised “safety” where the IDF can bomb them again.

They must do what their Israeli master tells them to do.

If they don’t we in the USA will blame them for their disobedience by continuing to give arms to Israel, just as we have done for half a century.

If you can’t sense my sarcasm and my revulsion at what Israel is doing, read my comment again. I’m sure you won’t be able to miss it.

When a car comes, get out of its way quickly and courteously.

Most everything you need to get along in society you learned as a kid. This Gigi Hyden must have been one of those slow kids who couldn’t learn what all the other kids could.
Or she did learn all that, and she chooses to be a bastard anyway.

Sounds to me like you are projecting…

Everyone sees things from their own perspective, along with what they see, and say, as/is the being the truth, and is subject to their own self biased point of view.

It isn’t necessarily the actual truth , based on real, solid, unmistakable evidence.

What you have said in your comments defending Israel, is a prime example of untruths, clearly only poorly masquerading as truths, behind a thin, threadbare, transparent, self biased veil.

And yet you have the nerve to call out question someone else’s false testimony…

Why not also call out your very own…???

What is your theory concerning the level of intelligence of the IDF racist murderers of this innocent little five year old girl, Hind Rajah, and the rest of her family, including a relative, a 15 year old girl, Layan Hamadeh, who “disappeared” at the hands of the racist, murderous, Israeli IDF…

I suppose you would consider the non-pro-Palestinians, as being of far superior intellect and lineage…

And, please, while you are so busy “accurately” judging intellect, do also theorize what level of intelligence merely assuming a superiority of non-pro-Palestinians over pro-Palestinians would indicate…

Only the most dispicable of cretins, could ever, or would ever, stoop so incredibly low, to even feebly and pathetically attempt to justify it in any way, being especially disgusting, by excusing it in the most distasteful of ways…

https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/10/middleeast/hind-rajab-death-israel-gaza-intl/index.html

CNN

“A 5-year-old Palestinian girl who was trapped in a car with her dead relatives after it came under Israeli fire in Gaza last month has been found dead.

On January 29, Hind Rajab had been traveling in a car with her uncle, his wife and their four children, fleeing fighting in northern Gaza, when they came under Israeli fire, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

“The child [Hind Rajab] and everyone in the car were found killed by the Israeli Army near the Fares petrol station in the Tal Al-Hawa area, southwest of Gaza City, after about two weeks of her unknown fate due to the Israeli military operation in the area,” according to Khader Al Za’anoun, a Palestinian journalist working for CNN who spoke to the child’s grandfather.

The PRCS also confirmed the death of two ambulance workers dispatched to rescue the girl.

“The occupation deliberately targeted the Red Crescent crew despite obtaining prior coordination to allow the ambulance to reach the location to rescue the girl Hind,” read the statement.

Soon after the incident, CNN gave the Israeli military details about the incident last Friday, including coordinates provided by the Palestine Red Crescent Society. In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was “unfamiliar with the incident described.”

When contacted again by CNN, the IDF said they were “still looking into it.”

Hind’s cousin, 15-year-old Layan Hamadeh, made a desperate call for help to emergency services that was recorded by the PRCS and shared on social media. Audio of gunshots heard during the call revealed that Hamadeh was killed while making the call.

“They are shooting at us. The tank is right next to me. We’re in the car, the tank is right next to us,” Layan screams, amid intense gunfire in the background.

Layan then goes quiet, and the rounds of fire stop.

The paramedic on the phone tries to speak to her, repeatedly saying, “Hello? Hello?” but there is no response.

Alone, terrified and trapped in the car with the bodies of her relatives around her, Hind made a desperate call for help.

“Come take me. Will you come and take me? I’m so scared, please come!” Hind can be heard saying in a recording of the call to responders, released by the PRCS.

Hind’s mother Wissam Hamada said her daughter dreamed of becoming a doctor.

On Friday, she told CNN she was “waiting for her every second. I wish for her all the best, like any mother wishes for her daughter the best things and the nicest things in the world.” “

It’s unbelievable that someone would dismiss a response to a armed invasion targeting a select group with mass murder and kidnapping of hostages of citizens from 1 to 80 years old with so trivial and dismissive a word as “unnecessary.” The Hamas attack was, besides brutal, callous and calculatedly political, was unnecessary but you haven’t mentioned at all. A response to such abhorrent acts was certainly necessary for survival even if you considered excessively violent. Especially since the perpetrators were vocally announcing they would repeat such. To do that shows incredible bigotry.

Israel’s continued land-grabs, incursions, and economic stranglehold turned Palestine into a failed state, thus creating the perfect conditions for a terrorist group to rise to power.

Palestinians were engaging in attack on Jews long before Israel existed. Jews were not Arab nationalists and simply were to be excluded as not Arab in a time of Arab nationalism. Originally Jews bought land that was not wanted by Arabs and even that was too much for the Arab population to tolerate. Israel did not spring into existence because of Jewish settler violence. Settler violence came from Arab jingoism and Jews reacted with organizing defense. But somehow proPalestinan protesters choose to dismiss this history to focus only on the present situation that came about as the result of Arab intolerance. They whitewash Arab Palestinians even with the atrocities of 10/7 stinking under their noses. They rant about zionism but ignore equally ugly Pan Arabism of the time. It’s still going on yet ignored.
“In 1892, the Ottoman government decided to prohibit the sale of land in Palestine to Jews, even if they were Ottoman citizens…The Ottoman Land Code of 1858 “brought about the appropriation by the influential and rich families of Beirut, Damascus, and to a lesser extent Jerusalem and Jaffa and other sub-district capitals, of vast tracts of land in Syria and Palestine and their registration in the name of these families in the land registers”…“The sparse Arab population in the areas where the Jews usually bought their land enabled the Jews to carry out their purchase without engendering a massive displacement and eviction of Arab tenants.”…In the 1930s, most of the land was bought from landowners. Of the land that the Jews bought, 52.6% were bought from non-Palestinian landowners, 24.6% from Palestinian landowners, 13.4% from government, churches, and foreign companies, and only 9.4% from fellaheen (farmers).”…The shortage of land is due less to purchase by Jews than to the increase in the Arab population. The Arab claims that the Jews have obtained too large a proportion of good land cannot be maintained. Much of the land now carrying orange groves was sand dunes or swamps and uncultivated when it was bought.”
So Jews were excluded but Arabs were encouraged to immigrate to Palestine. When Jews bought land, they bought land that was so bad that no one was occupying it and they bought it from Arabs. What was the result? The Nebi Musa riots in which “The crowd reportedly shouted “Independence! Independence!” and “Palestine is our land, the Jews are our dogs!” Arab police joined in applause, and violence started. The local Arab population ransacked the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem. The crowd reportedly shouted “Independence! Independence!” and “Palestine is our land, the Jews are our dogs!” Arab police joined in applause, and violence started. The local Arab population ransacked the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem… “

Nearly 100,000 dead and wounded Palestinians, and you can’t see beyond your own snout, ridiculously opting instead to protest “Dozens” instead…???

That is what is askew.

It is your silence that you are obviously unable to register.

You call it “One five year old girl disappears”…

You’re arithmetic is significantly worse than the previously worst numbers oriented commenter….

Like 10 times worse than being off by 100 times…

You focus on the “dozens”, while you overlook the over 27,000…?‍♂️

That’s totally whack.

But at least your not alone…

There is safety in numbers…

Oh…!!! Wait…!!!

Despite your petty and irrational personal attacks, my “snout” is perfectly aware of the violence against Palestinians. However I don’t turn it into the simple minded melodrama you do. I recognize that Palestinians are not simply victims of the antisemitic tropes you constantly spew but are responsible for their own hateful and intolerant violence for the last hundred years or more too. Any people that not only support but admire the atrocities of Hamas to the point of seeing them as no reason at all for Israel actions are so stewed in their own bile as to corrupt tonthe bone.

Like I said.

Totally whack.

Despite your perpetual and argumentative personal attacks, that amount to little more than knee jerk, flimsy excuses and projection, it’s not like what is connected to that olfactory challenged proverbial “snout” don’t smell. It’s sense, awkwardly plays dumb, perfectly unaware of and uncoordinated with the incomparably greater violence of the Israelies against the Palestinians.

Additionally, you portray the IDF genocide of the Palestinians to be nothing more than a simple minded Seinfeld-esque fictional Sitcom. Your comments have that same incessant, self aggrandizing, totally annoying, loudly resonating, nasally whine to them…

Unlike you, I clearly recognize that those mass murderers, the Israelies, that you support are not simply victims of the antisemitic tropes you constantly accuse others of, but that they, not anyone else, are responsible for the hateful and intolerant violence they have suffered, and that they have perpetrated, for the last few thousand years or more.

Any people that not only support, but admire, the atrocities of the IDF, to the point of seeing them as no reason at all for reciprocal actions, along with the IDF themselves, to be sure, are so stewed in their own gall as to corrupt them to their very, soulless, heartless, ice cold blood and putrid, rancid marrow.

It’s a world wide problem.

There are 468 million children worldwide living in armed conflict zones, according to Save the Children’s research, accounting for about 20% of the world’s 2.4 billion children population, based on UNICEF’s statistics.

The abuse of girl children is well known but there is also this as a demented political tactic- “In Iraq and Syria, children were routinely featured in the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria’s (ISIS) propaganda, and the group mobilized children as “cubs” to fight for the so-called Caliphate. Unfortunately there is a myriad of reasons why terrorist organizations actively include children within their ranks: children can be proficient fighters, and they are easy to train, cheaper to feed, and harder to detect. Thus, recruiting and deploying children is often rooted in “strategy” and not necessarily the result of shrinking numbers of adult recruits.”

Wow! That’s quite a few assumptions you have made about me. If what you picked up on is that I’m not an anti-semite, you are correct. If you think that somehow I feel the Palestinian people deserve to be treated poorly because of their genetics, you are mistaken. If you think antisemitism is acceptable, you may be among the folks referenced by my initial comment.

You were implying that the protester was a low intelligence, anti semitic racist, were you not…???

And of course, simultaneously implying that you, as nothing more than a self proclaimed non anti semitic, have humbly judged yourself to be in possession of a much higher intellect, based on that alone.

Fascinating.

Why do you not also protest the genocide of the Palestinians…???

Because you are not Antisemitic….???

Sounds about right.

It’s just that type of indifference and acceptance that allows such atrocities to continue uninterrupted.

What level of intelligence do you attribute to randomly associating antisemitism and/or racism to one who is merely a protester of the IDF genocide of the Palestinians…

That is not antisemitism, nor is it racist.

She’s not mearly a protester, she singled out a group of white males because of race and gender. If it was a large group of dark females she would of let them pass. Then blocked them and attacked their vehicle. ON TOP OF ALL THAT,She Made a false police report of a hate crime against herself.Cant get much lower then that.

It’s not her participation in the protest that makes her a racist. It’s the race-baiting. Fabricating a story where one pretends to be a victim of racial injustice is racist bullshit. I’m glad she is being charged. As others have noted, her actions seem to fit the definition of a hate crime.

Likewise it’s not her participation in the protest that leads me to the conclusion that she lacks intelligence. It’s the telling of a lie that is nearly sure to be proven false.

It looks to me like she has achieved the trifecta of dishonesty, racism, and stupidity.

In my experience, racists almost always lack intelligence. Biology shows that we are all overwhelmingly the same. We are humans.

I observe many recorded instances where protesters flat-out lie about circumstances. They seem adherents to the manta, by any means necessary. Lies, deceit, and violence. It ends up making their entire cause look bad.

Why is RHBB still so intent on trying this case in the court of public opinion now when it has been referred to the government for official action? It’s not being swept under the rug. The case will either be dismissed or will be tried with more careful yet public review than can be provided here even with additional video.

Once again, the RHBB comment section sniffed out the BS while the finely tuned loco comment section blamed the victim and championed the perpetrator.

Loco is an echo chamber. While some of the members here give less than logical evaluations of events, the true nature of events can be seen in the dialogue that follows. Thank you Kym for the space to debate ideas!

Y’all are so weird and inconsistent. Espousing love or support for Israel while also seeking the same political and social ends as folks in the US who identify as Nazis. Its real quiet in the public forum when it comes to talking about the swastikas and innumerable other, direct support of Nazi beliefs and actions taken by the contemporary US conservative. Who said “jews will not replace us?” It wasn’t the libs or dems. Who talked about good guys on both sides when asked about the literal US Nazis?

Gigi shouldn’t have hit that car window with her fist, but man, it would be nice to hear what was said.
