Walnut Drive Utility Project to Relocate Sewer and Water Lines Away from Slide-Prone Area
Press release from the Humboldt Community Services District:
The Humboldt Community Services District (HCSD) will begin construction on the Walnut Drive Utility Earthquake Recovery and Resilience Project on Monday, August 18, 2025. The grant-funded project, supported by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES), will relocate critical sewer and water infrastructure away from slide-prone areas along Walnut Drive between Hurst Street and Northridge Road.
These improvements are part of HCSD’s ongoing commitment to enhancing system reliability and emergency preparedness in the event of a seismic event. By rerouting utilities away from unstable ground, the District is taking proactive steps to protect essential services and safeguard the community.
Construction Schedule and Traffic Impacts:
- Start Date: August 18, 2025
- Anticipated Completion: November 3, 2025
- Work Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Traffic control measures will follow Humboldt County-approved plans, including single-lane closures managed by flaggers and intermittent full road closures with clearly marked detour routes.
- Construction signage will be posted at least five days before work begins.
Any planned water or sewer service interruptions will be communicated to affected customers at least 48 hours in advance.
This project represents an important investment in the safety and reliability of our community’s water and sewer infrastructure. The District appreciates the public’s patience as we complete these vital improvements.”

How about the lines across from 5955 Christopher Drive, just off Walnut??? That area has been creeping down the hill for 15 years.
At least 22 homes will be affected when it breaks the incoming water line and the outgoing sewer line. And possibly pge.
The powers that be know about it. Probably waiting till it fails. Then hurry up and fix it.
And where it will fail, all that sewage will be cause for a major hazmat response.
