[UPDATE 5:39 p.m.: One Structure Burning] Fire Reported Near Humboldt-Mendocino County Line

A vegetation fire, the Hansen Fire, broke out late this afternoon, August 11, near the Humboldt-Mendocino County line. The blaze was reported at approximately 5:09 p.m. in the area of 7041 Hansen Ranch Road near Millstead Road, an area so far north it borders Humboldt County but is officially in Mendocino County, according to initial location data.

However, confusion over jurisdiction arose quickly. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said the fire is not in their county and a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) beat unit described it as being in Garberville, but the majority of 911 calls reporting the fire came from Piercy.

Cal Fire has dispatched a full wildland fire response with both ground crews and aircraft. Air resources arrived on scene by about 5:30 p.m., including Tankers 90 and 96, which helped pin down the fire’s exact location and they were able to begin suppression efforts.

UPDATE 5:39 p.m.: The Air Attack is describing this as one acre in the grass moving into timber with a moderate rate of spread. They report that one structure is threatened and fire is already burning in one structure. Currently they believe there is only a potential for 5 acres.

UPDATE 6:35 p.m.: The smoke is dissipating on the AlertCalifornia camera.

“The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said the fire is not in their county…”

That is completely inexcusable…!!!

Because it is, in fact, in Mendocino County…

No question about that…

It sure looks like it’s WELL into Mendocino County to me…

And it sure doesn’t look like it’s in Humboldt County, at all…

And it damn sure ain’t in Trinity County…

But, what do I know…???

I know that the County Line is real close to the 271 green steel bridge over the South Fork Eel River, which is located just under the “V” in “Cooks Valley”, as noted on the included topo map with the flight patterns…

The county line runs east west in that area, so the fire is clearly in Mendocino County, Kym…

Thank you Real Guest for taking the time to confirm what County the fire is burning and expanding, I don’t know what RHBB would do without you and your meticulous investigative journalism during this years wildfire season.

Ed Voice…

Your very welcome, whether your being serious, and even if you are not…

Manners first…

That being said…

Do I correctly sense a bit of facetiousness, and/or sarcasm, or is that just my suspicious nature and hyper-observance acting up again…???

You always question my knowledge of this area, as if you are always much more knowledgeable and familiar with it than I, but trust me, I know more about the area of the fire, than you might think, or that you might give me credit for…

But I don’t really care, just so you know…

That’s MEU territory, not HUU territory…

No question about it…

If your comment is just snark, you certainly know of what you speak as far as what is, and what isn’t, the kind of RHBB commentary that Kym and her readers might genuinely assess as being truly indespensible…

Let me be the first to say, Thank you so much for your perpetual, dependably invaluable, “contributions”…

LOL…!!!

You are a truly inspirational, eloquent, and exemplary…!!!

Hopefully, an additional complimentary reply will be soon to follow, in very short order, or my precognition is getting rusty…!!!

Thanks again, in advance…

Wow, everybody’s wound pretty tight these days. That’s why I try to be an exemplar of peace, serenity, and calm in the maelstrom. An unemotional beacon in these trying times. (Titter, giggle)

Dee dee da dee dee dee. What we have here is a failure to communicate. A combo plate of Deliverance and Call Me Mr. Tibbs. Who’s gonna play the heroic Mendocino Sheriff? Rod Steiger is too old. C’mon Central Casting. The State is burning up and the MCSO can’t be bothered. Doh!

Accuracy is of vital importance…!!!

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office’s credibility just took a hit…!!!

Hence the old adage…

“Trust, but verify…”

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, has definitely got some splainin’ to do…!!!

A correction is definitely in order…

Trust me, but verify it…!!!

LOL…!!!

The 271 green steel bridge over the South Fork Eel River at Cooks Valley, as shown in this topic map rendition as being between the small “k” and the small “s” in Cooks Valley, is actually somewhat South of the Humboldt/Mendocino County Line, which leave even less doubt than none that this HANSEN FIRE, being somewhat even further South of the green 271 bridge, albeit also East of there, IS CLEARLY, IN FACT, IN MENDOCINO COUNTY, NOT IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY…

History repeats itself. I remember 45 years ago waiting on a coroner to tag a dead logger laying in the woods as Mendo and Lake counties argued about who had jurisdiction.

What do you know…???

It IS in Mendocino…

https://lostcoastoutpost.com/wildfires/fire/2025-CAMEU-010062/

5 acres as of 7:01 PM…

Note the telltale, CAL FIRE MENDOCINO UNIT incident number, within the link…

“2025-CA MEU-010062”

That’s additional proof this was a MENDOCINO COUNTY CALL…

Need I say more…???

Very well…

“Accuracy is of paramount importance…”…

Next time MCSO denies jurisdictional responsibility, it will be even more important to question the accuracy of it, than it was this time…

I hope that there were no injuries involved, AND that no foul play was involved…

I certainly would not have ruled either out, nor that it was Mendocino County jurisdiction…

A large column of black smoke like that indicates a burning structure, dwelling, and/or vehicle…

Their should have been zero response hesitation by any responsible agency…

IMNSHO…

“PLEASE IMPROVE THE CONVERSATION BY DISAGREEING THOUGHTFULLY AND BACKING YOUR CLAIMS WITH FACTS”

Did I do OK…???

For future reference, if it’s in the area of the DREWRY RANCH HOUSE, or South of there, it’s well into Mendocino County…

The DREWRY RANCH LAND is also in Humboldt County…

As long as your going uphill, northbound on Bell Springs road, as you pass the DREWRY RANCH HOUSE PROPER,until it levels out, your in MENDOCINO COUNTY…

ABOUT THE TIME IT LEVELS OUT, The beat up and weathered old concrete Humboldt/ Mendocino County Line Monument is to the right, on the uphill side…

Generally speaking, any fire south of a true east west line sighted from that monument, is no longer in Humboldt, especially true southwest of that monument it will be in Mendocino, and true south easterly it will also be in Mendocino at least as far as the Humboldt/Trinity county line, where Trinity County dips a couple of miles further south than Humboldt…

I think we must know each other, you can almost always tell where the hum Mendo side is by the poor roads it’s almost always smoother on the Mendo side

Bell Springs road is probably a lot rougher on the mendo side, but I haven’t been over it in a while…

Right, but I was trying to establish the Humboldt Mendocino county line monument, along Bell Springs road, for future reference…

Milstead , the BLM access road to this HANSEN fire, is WAY South of the DREWRY RANCH HOUSE proper, so it’s even that much further south into Mendocino county from the Humboldt Mendocino county line that is north of the DREWRY RANCH HOUSE…

There was some confusion whether this fire was in Humboldt or Mendocino, within the MCSO, for whatever reason…
