[Update 2:31 p.m.] Vegetation Fire Reported in McKinleyville Community Forest

Vegetation Fire feature iconToday, Wednesday, July 30, a full wildland fire response was issued for the report of a vegetation fire in the McKinleyville Community Forest around 12:30 p.m.

Units from CAL FIRE, Arcata Fire, along with water tenders from Fieldbrook VFD and Blue Lake VFD were requested to respond to the Murray Road entrance to the forest. Two CAL FIRE hand crews and a dozer were also requested in additional to air support from Kneeland.

Initial reports indicate the now-named Dragon Fire is approximately 1/2 acre with a slow rate of spread.

Additional ground units were requested and asked to stage at the Green Diamond parking lot.

Air Attack is overhead reporting a lack of visibility due to the marine layer that is expected to dissipate soon.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Update 1:10 p.m.: According to scanner traffic, Air Attack 120 and Tank 96, loaded, have been released from the Dragon Fire.

Update 1:22 p.m.: The incident commander of the Dragon Fire reported that crews have hose lay around the perimeter of the fire. They also released one engine and cancelled one incoming hand crew and the dozer.

Update 2:02 p.m.: The Incident Commander is releasing more units and says the fire is contained at .59 acres.

Update 2:31 p.m.: The Incident Commander estimates mop up will be complete by 5 p.m.

The homeless are never out of the woods, by definition.

Agree, same area had a fire a few weeks ago. That gate always seems open all night.

They don’t push their bikes that far. The current green truck is where they head in if using Murray.

Work Camps. We need Work Camps.
A couple months sentence: Either they will ‘get it’ or they will be headed back to SF/LA.

Maybe opening it up to the public wasn’t such a good idea. Who would’ve thunk?!!!

I agree. But it’s gotten worse since it was opened to the public. Am I right???

I would say better with more people. This camp was in an article on this site about a decade ago when a dead tree almost crushed a camper. I remember making a comment that the skunks conspired to fall the tree. In hindsight they may have convinced the bear to do the job.

yep! People are now coming further up the hill to David, Elizabeth, Libby.. parking and trespassing on private lands.

side note.. I’ve been walking that forest/ fieldbrook rd for 5+yrs to town fer work, food etc. anyhoo, I’m curious about what wildlife studies were done prior to the opening, along with the butchering subdivision across the street?

2 bear families
1 male bear
2 cats (that i new of)
multiple- squirrels, fox, skunks, raccoons, deer, bobcat.. even elk pass through there on their way to glendale/ bluelake.

so it seems to be noticing by people that the animals are coming further up the road, and are even being seen more in community yards. cats actually seen crossing back and forth into mac forest during the day and even on the Hammond. so really they’re being pushed out in all directions.

just curious.. thanks
