Tsunami Advisory Lifted for Humboldt County, But Caution Still Urged Near Coast

The tsunami advisory issued for Humboldt County following a powerful earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula has been officially lifted, according to the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services. The advisory, which prompted concern along the Northern California coast, was canceled late Wednesday morning.

“The TSUNAMI ADVISORY has been CANCELLED for the Humboldt County coast. Strong, dangerous ocean currents and waves are still possible. Exercise caution if visiting beaches and/or coastal waterways,” Humboldt OES stated. Officials continue to urge the public to remain alert around the ocean as conditions may remain hazardous for some time.

The cancellation comes as the National Tsunami Warning Center scaled back alerts for much of the West Coast. However, advisories remain in effect for Del Norte County—including Crescent City—and a portion of the Central California coast stretching from Ragged Point (near San Luis Obispo) to Rincon Point (near Santa Barbara). The Hawaiian Islands also continue to operate under a tsunami advisory.

The alerts were triggered by a magnitude-8.8 earthquake off the eastern coast of Russia on Tuesday, July 29. Although the resulting wave activity was relatively minor for California, some harbors—including Crescent City—experienced water level changes of several feet, along with strong currents that posed a hazard to boats and swimmers.

No significant damage or injuries have been reported locally, and normal activity is gradually resuming. Still, officials recommend staying informed and exercising caution near beaches and waterways.
