Osprey vs. Eagle: A High-Speed Skirmish Over the South Fork

Finally, the Osprey let go of the fish. [Photo by Ann Constantino]

Yesterday morning on Free Range Photography, local nature photographer Ann Constantino shared a dramatic encounter on the South Fork of the Eel River: an Osprey carrying its breakfast was chased through the air by a Bald Eagle, likely one of the Benbow Pair known to be raising an eaglet nearby.

The brief but intense chase lasted just 45 seconds, with the Osprey twisting and banking in evasive maneuvers before finally relinquishing its half-eaten catch. The eagle snatched the fish midair and headed upstream—presumably back to the nest.

“Don’t get me wrong, I love Bald Eagles,” writes Constantino. “But I do not kid myself that they are noble or majestic… They are also expert thieves.”

Great photos and story — looks like the eagle has his eyes firmly locked on the fish — the osprey corners better but the eagle’s greater speed and power won the day — and with every wing beat drawing near the osprey probably realized it better let go of it’s dinner before it became dinner.

What an Aesop fable of human behavior, which are not about justice as much as warning about reality.

Many, many, superb Birds In Flight (BIF) photographs on the website. BIF is not so easy!!! Well done, putting all those years of experience into producing so many masterpieces in just 45 seconds.

majestic and noble are constructs of the human ego and mean nothing in nature.

Wonderful captures! Must have been amazing to see. We watched a (Coopers? Red-Tail?) Hawk and a Bald Eagle just the other day along the coast. They sort of sparred for a bit. Love this place.

In Alaska, the eagles are on par with Ravens and raccoons down here

They’re all over 299 now. You can spot there heads in a tree on the other side of the river from a mile away

Amazing photo, what an incredible sighting! That eagle got a midair meal delivery thanks to the osprey. I’ve caught a couple sightings of a bald eagle down black sands in the last couple months. Always feel blessed when I see them. Thanks for sharing.
