Noel Hilliard, Founder of Lamps by Hilliard, Remembered as Craftsman and Devoted Father

Noel Hilliard 1948-2025

Noel Hilliard passed away at the age of 77 from complications of Parkinson’s. His life’s work began over half a century ago with the founding of Lamps by Hilliard.After graduating from Humboldt State University with his art degree, Noel and his wife, Janene, started Lamps by Hilliard in their backyard in Arcata. They created custom art glass and bronze lighting that has been sold around the world.

Noel was an inspirational designer, craftsman, builder, and businessman, who took his dream to a reality, creating a business that gainfully employed dozens of talented local people, and brought millions of dollars into Humboldt County. Sam, Noel’s son, continues with the family business tradition of creating lighting and fine design.

Noel was a natural athlete who enjoyed wind and wave surfing, skiing, and tennis. He loved baseball and was a loyal lifelong Giants fan.

Noel liked to laugh and appreciated a keen sense of humor. He and Janene hosted epic Halloween parties with fantastic costumes and adventures.

He leaves behind a wide circle of eclectic friends and is survived by his two sons, Henri and Sam, their families, and their mother, Janene.

Noel was lovingly cared for by his girlfriend Peggy, and was able to remain at home for the last seven years of his life. For that we are eternally grateful.
