Crash on Covelo Road This Morning Sends One to Hospital with Major Injuries
A young man suffered major injuries in a crash that occurred early this morning along Covelo Road, east of U.S. Highway 101, in Mendocino County.
The crash was first reported at 7:00 a.m. on Covelo Road, where a white box truck went off the roadway and down an embankment. According to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page, the vehicle sustained significant front-end damage and was lodged approximately 25 feet down the hillside.
Initial reports indicated that a young male occupant was outside the vehicle and appeared to be injured. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene, and the incident was upgraded to a major injury collision shortly after 9:00 a.m.
Towing services from TandT Towing and Willits Tire were called in to recover the vehicle, which was described as approximately 55 feet in length. The crash did not result in any road closures, as the vehicle had left the roadway.
At this time, the cause of the crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

I sure hope that the young man will heal quickly and be fine. I wonder if someone spotted the van over the bank. At 55 feet long it would not be hard to miss. Thankfully it only traveled 25 feet down the bank. If the van had gone farther down the driver may have been killed.
Busy on 162 lately, first the high-speed chase that ended in a rollover, then the man from Covelo who died after departing the roadway, now this. IIRC all were around MM 5.0, don’t recall what bend that is but mental note to self to take it slow..
The gentleman who died after going off the road was on his way to dialysis. It is possible that he may have had a blood sugar event, causing him to lose consciousness.
162 is unforgiving.
Unforgiving indeed, and the road surface is really nice at the moment since it was just paved, makes it easy to get up some good speed. People drive that road fast, I use the turnouts just about every trip to let somebody go.
Living with end stage renal failure in Covelo (or anyplace remote from services) is a tough prospect, poor guy.
Old Covelo saying: One for the river and one for the road.
Yes, every year. But some years there are more taken. Oofta is right about the road being nice and smooth right now, a long-awaited event after years of drivers weaving around potholes and bouncing over buckled asphalt. “The mountains that walk” are constantly at work bringing chaos to the road surface, and all the big trucks going in and out don’t help. It’s a double-edged sword; a lovely smooth road that is finally a joy to drive, and people are just going way too fast.
I’ve been driving the Covelo Road for fifty years now. Two things to know: SLOW DOWN, PAY ATTENTION.
Slow and steady wins the race
