A new fire, named the Sky Fire, was reported in the hills north of Redway around 1:50 p.m. today. The fire is currently showing a column of smoke on the AlertCalifornia camera network.

Copter 901, an Air Attack, and Tanker 96 are responding to or already at the incident as of 2:12 p.m. as crews work to assess the fire’s size and potential spread. The area has steep terrain and dry conditions which could make fighting it difficult.

FlightRadar shows Tanker 96 and the air attack circling about the Sky Fire.

Ground crews are also on their way.

We’ll update as soon as more information becomes available.

UPDATE: Smoke has dissipated and FlightRadar no longer shows aircraft above the fire. KMUD News spoke to Cal Fire’s Battalion Chief Jeremy Ward who stated that the forward progress on the fire was stopped. Earlier he told them that the fire was a 1/2 acre in heavy timber near Wood Ranch Road in the Bear Butte area and only spreading slowly. He continues to estimate the fire at 1/2 acre or less. ( However, it hasn’t been mapped yet.) He said that the aircraft has been released and ground crews are mopping up.

Great job everyone for putting that fire out. Does anyone have information on how this fire started?

Probabilities ? (Declining Scale)
1: Either an rare lightning strike (that developed from the low pressure area that moved over the area a a few days ago).
2: Human.
3: Meteorite
4: Space laser beamed from Italian Satellites to disrupt voting machines.
5: Deer kicked a rock downhill.

Along with a handful in the Blocksburg area there was one lightning strike recorded near Redway when that low pressure passed through.
