EPD Releases Information on Fatal Collision in Eureka
Press release from the Eureka Police Department:
Emergency personnel at the scene of the crash.
On August 6, 2024, at approximately 1:54 pm, Officers from Eureka Police Department responded to a single vehicle rollover collision at I/Henderson Streets. Upon arrival, officers extricated the driver and began life-saving efforts. Humboldt Bay Fire took over life-saving efforts and the driver was transported to a nearby hospital. However, at the hospital, the driver was declared deceased. Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the driver suffered a medical emergency prior to the collision which ultimately resulted in their death.
A member of EPD’s Major Injury/Fatal Traffic Investigations Team, EPD Detectives, and Evidence Technicians responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.
The decedent has been identified and the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office is working to notify next of kin.
This is an active investigation and EPD is asking witness to contact Officer Mark Sheldon at 707-441-4060.

Once again people were jumping to conclusions blaming the driver or the city for the bulb outs and bike lanes without waiting for the facts.
Sad but true. Human nature wants patterns, and greatly prefers familiar patterns. So, we will find some way to twist and contort new information to fit familiar beliefs, whether those be political or religious beliefs.
A columnist for the New York Daily Sun, Don Marquis, wrote circa 1920 “If you make people think they’re thinking, they’ll love you. If you really make them think they’ll hate you.” We really don’t like to analyze our most deeply held convictions.
Nowadays, it’s called “cognitive dissonance”, but the Pointed Man summed it up nicely: “You see what you want to see, and you hear what you want to hear.” Or, as Jesus is quoted, “seeing, they see not, and hearing, they hear not.”
“We tell ourselves stories in order to live”.
That was a really good comment.
Due to poor grammar in the press release, I’m still unsure what caused the death. Was it the medical emergency or the collision that caused the death?
I believe an autopsy will need to determine that and since this accident occurred yesterday, they likely don’t have those answers yet. Based on the press release, it seems to me like they suspect the medical condition caused both the crash and the death, but the autopsy will provide further details. However, we rarely get additional information in cases like this.
It may have been a type 1 diabetic having an insulin reaction. Make sure the blood sugar is normal prior to driving a vehicle.
Once again, pure speculation. STFU
Yes…. double yes. Most always the same comments.

It was a very sad story. It breaks my heart that the driver of the vehicle on its roof had a medical emergency causing loss of vehicle control. Humboldt Bay Fire, EPD and other first responders applied a tremendous effort to save the drivers life. They got the driver in the ambulance quickly and went to St. Joseph’s Hospital, unfortunately the driver was declared deceased. I am sending along my heartfelt condolences to the driver’s family and friends. I pray God will give them the love and strength to get through this most difficult time in their lives. May the driver forever RIP.
