[UPDATE]Mendocino Martial Artist Died During Standoff With Henderson, Nevada Police This Weekend
Last Friday, April 12th, 2024, a standoff erupted in Henderson, Nevada, involving local police and an armed, suicidal individual barricaded in an apartment. The suspect, wanted for a violent crime, eventually died during the multi-day incident.
Despite attempts to de-escalate, the situation intensified over the weekend, prompting a SWAT team deployment. The subject opened fire on the entering tactical unit, but no injuries were reported. Authorities resorted to using an excavator to breach the building.
Approximately thirty hours later, the standoff concluded with the death of the subject, identified as 31-year-old Trevor Cooper.Multiple media outlets have begun to report on Cooper’s background, touching on his background in Jiu-Jitsu.
But, Mendocino County is well-acquainted with Trevor Cooper. His criminal record within the county is extensive, and he was a known entity in the local martial arts circuits. A local woman even remembers him for his kindness towards his adopted animal companion.Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Andy Porter told us Cooper was known to local law enforcement as a skilled martial artist and a dangerous person.
The Anderson Valley Adverstier’s Catch of the Day column states he was a Redwood Valley resident on or around May 16, 2017, when he was booked on charges of driving with a suspended license.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office asked the public for help on June 14, 2017, after reports emerged of Cooper reportedly going missing.
According to a post on the agency’s Facebook page, he went missing on June 13, 2017, around 9:30 p.m. and was last seen by his mother in a 2017 Ford F-150. The vehicle would later be found on the 1300 block of McNab Ranch Road “with some of his personal effects inside of it” and with “indications that Trevor may be injured”. MCSO wrote at the time, “Trevor’s location and well-being is unknown.”
Cooper eventually arrived at Willits’s Howard Memorial in the early morning of Thursday, June 15, 2017, alleging he had been kidnapped and held overnight. An article from KZYX said that Cooper did not give much detail about his alleged abduction due to his “minor injuries”Lieutenant Porter told us that upon questioning about the alleged abduction investigators came to believe Cooper staged the kidnapping trying to build an alibi for charges of stalking and domestic violence he would later face.
A police log from the Ukiah Daily Journal dated October 20, 2017, indicates that 24-year-old Cooper was arrested on suspicion of stalking, threatening injury and conspiring to commit a felony and domestic battery. A review of the Mendocino County Superior Court records indicates these charges would later be dismissed.
In November 2018, officers with the Ukiah Police Department responded to a home on the 800 block of West Mill Street after receiving reports of cannabis being grown in the backyard. A press release from UPD states Cooper answered the door, acknowledged having cannabis, and allowed officers to enter the home to see the cannabis. Inside officers located equipment used to make butane honey oil, 4 “replica assault weapons”, and $5,000.
But not all of Cooper’s Mendocino County legacy is problematic.
Ukiah resident Chris Edwards remembered Cooper as a “great jiu jitsu mentor” and “one of the most talented Jiu Jitusu guys I had ever known.”
Edwards told us Cooper began his Jiu Jiutsu career at Ukiah’s Mendocino Combat Club and later moved to Thailand to further his training. When Cooper returned to the United States, he briefly returned to his Ukiah fighting gym which was now the Mendo Training Center.
Eventually, Edwards said Cooper studied under Dave Terrell, a well-known Jiu-Jitsu trainer out of the Nor Cal Fighting Alliance in Santa Rosa.
Becca Edwards, the Dog Kennel Manager at the Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County, told us Cooper adopted a dog from them around six years ago, and she remembers Cooper as a “very nice guy in all my experiences with him.” He “took very good care of his dog.”The last time she heard from Cooper was in August 2023 when he messaged Edwards on Instagram asking her about pet insurance.
After hearing the news of his weekend’s standoff, Edwards is concerned about dog’s well-being. She asked if anyone knows about the status of the dog to email her at [email protected]
This last weekend, Cooper had a horrific interaction with law enforcement in Henderson, Nevada that ended with police literally tearing apart the building he had barricaded himself in. Images of that fatal encounter have headlined news sites in the Nevada area these last few days.
Kristina Pelly Filocamo, a woman who lived in the Henderson, Nevada neighborhood where the standoff took place, told us she watched as law enforcement yelled out “Trevor come out, this isn’t a game, you need to come out with your hands up”. She said that Cooper had “created havoc in our normally very sleepy neighborhood.”
Video by Kristina Pelly Filocamo
Law enforcement reports that the suspect was “making suicidal statements, refusing to surrender.” Eventually, they said, “On April 13, 2024, at about 8:45am, Henderson’s SWAT team made entry into the residence where the suspect discharged multiple rounds.” They left and no one was reported to be injured.
In the early hours of April 14, law enforcement reported they found Cooper dead. Media sources state that he may have overdosed.
Filocamo, the neighbor in Henderson, Nevada who witnessed the barricade speaks for many when she kindly says, “Please pray for all of the families who have been displaced, and also pray for Trevor’s family- they lost their son and that breaks my heart as well. No one would want this to happen to their family members.”

Condolences to all involved.
But using an excavator to tear into a multi-family apartment building seems like a major overreach. Hard to justify making innocent families homeless.
Why not send in a robot to assess the situation as some police agencies have done?
Dallas even used a robot to take out the ambush killer of several police officers.
Your condolences fall flat. Let’s not divert our focus from the guy who ultimately proved a major threat to his community. You can throw all the yabuts and whatifs you want. You weren’t there, and you don’t know the facts other than a violent man was killed. I bet his neighbors are glad he’s gone, and they’ll easily find new housing. Probably with assistance from the state of Nevada like it should be. Of course if you really cared you could look further into the matter and start a go fund me for the neighbors.
And by the way, Dallas police used explosives to take out that killer. The explosive was placed by a remote controlled delivery device that you call a robot. Do you own a robotics company or something?
Edit- I have to laugh at this: you are either so terribly misinformed, or you prefer the use of explosives on civilian apartment building over the use of an excavator. Hah!
That comment (and the article itself) reminds me of the Gilbert and Sullivan song from over a hundred years ago “When a Felon’s Not Engaged In His Employment” with its repeative chorus “A policeman’s lot is not a happy one.”

Trolling me?
One of the funny/not funny aspects of this site is the prevalence of morons who don’t know what they’re talking about, but rush to draw false conclusions, or make false assumptions.
On that we seem to agree.
Based on the story quite a few facts are known.
But contrary to your statement there’s nothing in the story that says the perpetrator was “killed”, which would imply he died at the hands of the police.
The article only says he “died” – with some speculation it may have been from an overdose.
You also falsely say I’d prefer the cops take him out with explosives, something I never said or implied. The reference to Dallas was only to illustrate the capabilities of robots.
And you seem to think “robot” and “remotely controlled delivery device” are mutually exclusive terms.
I took a break from RHBB based on the very inconsistent moderation.
But unlike you I never accused Kym of censorship – her site, her rules, no matter how inconsistently or arbitrarily applied.
When I came back I considered adopting “I Am Surrounded By Idiots” as a new screen name.
I don’t have time to constantly correct a person who seems incapable of comprehending what they’ve read.
So from this post forward my response to you, if any, will be “IASBI”.
Umm…what does IASBI mean? I might adopt it also!
“IASBI” = I Am Surrounded By Idiots
Weren’t you being trolled yesterday by the same person who is short on facts, quick on assumptions?
Sorry that I traumatized you, I didn’t mean to antagonize. It must wear on you to be surrounded by idiots all the time. You can change that though. Some therapists suggest outdoor activity to alleviate internet induced stress. Kayaking, biking, hiking, fishing. Have you tried that?
Those are great ways to lose the pesky idiot humans. Hiking w/ dogs is a great one- just to see those very happy faces. Dogs can be idiots too sometimes but at least they are fun idiots!
Lol
Idk. Sometimes I get so busy trolling somebody that I don’t notice when somebody is trolling me LOL. But yes- facts always win over trolling- as they should…And I am adopting that acronym!
Yeah the guy died. He was killed. Either by himself or the police. If you want to reduce this debate to semantics that’s fine.
And I thought your gripe was with the excavator? Are you still in favor of the Dallas method? They did resolve it with explosives no matter what you call the delivery method.
I’m surprised Kym lets your not-so-subtle, snide attempts to insult slide, apparently without moderation. [edit]
Kym has had quite a morning/afternoon and trying to sort out straight out actual insults from general statements such as “One of the funny/not funny aspects of this site is the prevalence of morons…” that hint at but avoid actually saying the person the commenter is replying to is being described…has not been the top of my list.
On the other hand, here I am now and I’ve decided that the first statement is general though tipping towards being deleted but “My father told me not to engage with inebriates or fools, but here I am.” went over the edge.
I can’t wait to hear you tell me how evil I am. It will not even be the low point of the last five minutes though let alone my whole day so…I suspect we’ll both survive.
Whatever, it’s your place. I think my father’s sentiment was good advice, and really not all that different from Truth Be Told’s proclamation. Both statements can easily be construed as slimy debate tactic, but I do find it interesting you chose to censor one post instead of both.
What would you think was my reasoning? Do you think I favor him and couldn’t wait to showcase it by my reply? or do you think that there is a fine line that I’m having to draw somewhere and by my past reasoning his falls on one side and yours on another?
He did say this place is full of morons and he’s surrounded by idiots. So he’s trying to insult some percentage of your readership, not just me. He accuses me of trolling for having the gall to disagree and state my own thoughts.
I do think you favor some of your regular contributors like Truth Be Told. I’m a relative newbie with sometimes unpopular opinions. Your enforcement of your own rules is lopsided, and quality of discussion suffers because of it. I think you are naïve to your own bias sometimes.
Insulting all my readers or all liberals or all Republicans is allowed here. It’s only when one insults specific commenters that it breaks the rules.
In any case, I wouldn’t be the only person blind to my own bias. But feel free to point any concerns you have out to me.
I would like to point out that Truth Be Told is not particularly kind to me and my policies and some folks might think I might be biased against him.
Please don’t waste your time on explaining this moderation stuff (besides generic recap of rules), I fear that it will burn you out or at least bum you out.
AI content moderation might save you a lot of time and irritation.
That is essentially a bigot-friendly environment that you have created and enforce. It frequently becomes a rather dense cesspool of comments.
It does. But then, I’m not big on pretending that everything is unicorns and butterflies. I’d rather have conversations with folks I vehemently disagree with than stuff cotton in my ears and pretend they don’t exist.
Thank you, Kym, for hosting this site. It’s such a great forum. Hopefully it continues for a hundred years
Unless I can get a revenue source that allows me to hire someone or get someone passionate about going without sleep to provide the community information for little money, I suspect RHBB is going to die in a few years. Breaks my heart a little.
Are you aware that AI can handle the bulk of your problem?
Think Mini-Me on a chip.
Think reverse Pink Slime.
I would be happy to donate 10 hours a week Kym! I have 10 years of NEWSWEB AND WORDPRESS experience. I ran a newswire for 12 years that had over 6 million unique visits.
Happy to lend a hand.
Don’t worry about it. The articles on here are barely considered news
Hello Wake Up, I’ll try to appreciate your feedback even if you woke up on the cranky pants side of life! We strive to provide a variety of content and it seems we might have missed the mark for you this time.
It’s interesting how the free things in life, like our news site, often invite the most…er…unique critiques. If our menu doesn’t suit your taste, there’s a whole internet out there catering to every palate. Maybe you’ll find something that feels more like news to you elsewhere. We encourage you to fly free little cranky bird and find your joy.
He sure pushed your buttons! You sound kinda cranky too Kym. Hopefully you can hire someone to moderate for you soon, because it must be exhausting. Your family is missing out with you being forced to police this place all the time. It would be a SHAME if rhbb stopped. It might destroy some of your regular contributors to lose this discussion forum. I guess there’s always reddit, but it just ain’t the same
Did I sound cranky? I felt amused/ a little cringy that someone is in such a small place morally this morning that they need to yuck someone else’s yum for no particular reason.
It’s refreshing to see you running out of patience with these jerks…
This place is swimming in nuance lately.

10. **Human Rights:** Freedom of speech is a fundamental human right, vital for individual autonomy and dignity.
Imagine how much easier life would be if you didn’t moderate Kym,
Your site would grow much the way Elon Musk’s “X” has grown…
I know cancel culture was a huge fad when SLEEPY JOE got elected, but now that is changing, freespeech is backed by major popularity. X is blowing up today.
The days u left posts unmoderated, there was 4 times as much commentary, it made your site more interesting to read through the comments, it benefited you Kym since u didn’t have to waste time moderating your friends and neighbors and community. You would have more time and be much happier and could spend the time wasted on moderating on more exciting articles which you are really good at. And you would have less negative interactions…
The only complaint anyone has that I see is the Moderation and Censorship.
Perhaps it is time to rethink and get with the changing times.
Why exactly is Censorship amd moderation so important to yourself?
Newspapers Should Have No Friends -Anderson Valleh Advertiser front page motto for 40 years
I’ve already lost advertising because of my comment section. Think of how great it would be to lose even more!!!
I’m interested in ad advertising space in the budget of $150 per month!
Here’s our advertising rates but, to be clear, buying an ad isn’t a get-out-of-moderation card. Advertisers have to follow the same rules as everyone else. https://kymkemp.com/advertising-rates/
Advertisers who would leave because of the comment section aren’t worth having in anyway.
Sounds like you are more worried about money than you are about doing the right thing.
Shame on you.
Well, I just said I lost the advertiser…Some folks might not be able to grasp what the implication is, but I’m sure you must be smarter than that.
Can you stop with the censorship allegations? Except for racist or hate speech, AFAIK, Kym does not censor ideas. It’s pretty clear you need to start your own site.
You’re not being censored, you’re just a troll.
Kym,
Thank you for your invariably kind, thoughtful and respectful comments. And the humor!
As I read through your full exchange with TOTT I couldn’t help but laugh out loud several times!
You are well deserving of immense respect and the love of your community for RHBB which is a labor of love and a gift to the community.
Yes, I do think the moderation is inconsistent and somewhat arbitrary. But I agree with Farce that it’s because no one’s perfect.
Add to that the impossibility of evenly reviewing thousands of comments while simultaneously writing articles, running the site and figuring out how to pay your contributors what they deserve. Oh, and trying to get enough sleep!
Then there’s those commenters who walk the razor’s edge of the rules.
I was very aware “prevalence of morons” was right on the edge but it’s also a generalized comment. If that offends anyone then I say: “If the shoe fits, wear it.”
I also think an occasional finely nuanced insult adds a little spice to the mix.
BTW, the same person who accuses you of censorship and who thinks you favor me also thinks this site only allows “liberal dialogue” – I rest my case!
Oh, gweat, TOTT will be sure I favor you now.
Seriously, thanks for the kind words and understanding that if I had more time and possibly was smarter and definitely if I had more sleep, I’d be more discerning in my decisions about which comments to keep and which commenters to throw off the RHBB island. I do my best with the time I have to be fair and try to trust the mature commenters to understand that this is a very small website in a vast sea of opportunities to comment so no one should lose their shi..er..their mind over having a comment removed or even about being put on moderation.
Honestly, I’m just trying to make my job easier without losing any more advertisers than I have to while still satisfying my belief that if we all just shared ideas calmly (even scandalous ones), we might actually figure out how to have a better society.
The kind words are sincere. More time and sleep could help with the moderation but you have plenty of smarts and a big heart.
Spend less time explaining yourself to us idiots and get some sleep!
Kym said:
“this is a very small website in a vast sea of opportunities to comment”
Technically that is correct, in reality RHBB is the only site that matters,
for everyone around here…
As far as being surrounded by morons, that opinion is valid in all areas of the internet, for example when people are instantly outraged and believe what Just One Person says. (The fake names discourage self-editing, therefore let the “id” flags fly, one of my favorite things to do…)
Thanks for the comment about advertisers leaving because of some comments, I always suspected that your decisions about what to welcome and allow were ultimately about money, and keeping the lowest common denominator, ie the easiest offended, happy. I guess that’s what happens the more mainstream you want to go, and it seems to work okay here…
(A real time example of this is the Muslim USC valedictorian’s censorship before even given the opportunity to speak.)
These nitpicking detractors take themselves a little too seriously, IMO…
Interesting idea to not do monitoring and censoring, try it for a day?
(But I don’t think that’s in your nature, doesn’t fit the vision of how you want your site to be…)
As far as sleep goes:
Have a set bedtime.
No electronics in the bedroom
No eating three hours before bedtime
No drinking liquids two to three hours before bedtime
No screen time two to three hours before bedtime.
No alcohol.
No coffee after noon
No chocolate after three
No saunas after two
Probably the best thing to do for good sleep is be active, take hikes, exercise, etc
(And try not to think about disturbing things going on just before bed.)
Anyone can do all that and if they have a lot of anxiety it’s still going to be a challenge to get a good night’s sleep.
(Sometimes I think you have to NOT CARE about anyone, or any social or political outrage, to get a good night’s sleep…)
You have trained us to be less direct. We are evolving in our insults….ha ha ha!
I’m vaguely hopeful when I see less Breitbart and more Wall Street Journal, less Wonkette and more Reuters cited than I once did. But then I notice that the insults are cleverly crafted to fall just inside the save line and I despair that I’m making a difference at all.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if we poured all that effort of crafting the little dig that won’t get deleted into the calm reasoned response that might move us slightly forward as a civilization. (I might snicker a little less when reading the comment section though… .)
Reuters? Wall Street Journal? Are you for real? Aren’t you an independent journalist? Both of those are mouthpieces for corporate propaganda. Both should be treated with just as much disdain as breitbart. Surprised you didn’t mention the LA times
Also the Sac Bee and the LA Times…I approve of their fact checking.
Did you even read the article? It says the cops left after entering the apartment, and they think he died of an overdose. I agree, however, that this reporting seems self-contradictory. It calls the encounter “fatal”, but that noone was injured.
No one was shot but Cooper died. How he died is not officially released at this point. But the encounter led to him dying.
Yeah I read the article. Some criminal shot at the cops then “died” one way or another. Too bad, so sad. Nobody cares to split these hairs except his partners in crime and a few misguided internet activists. Good riddance to this man
Good riddance to your awful comments! Someone’s son died! Yeah he was messing up, messing up bad. [edit] Suicidal people do not behave rationally, obviously. Your lack of concern over a fellow human being is atrocious.
Gone is dead. It seems this young man had mental health issues and I think there is more to this story. He didn’t deserve to die. Maybe this could have been handled better. Sorry the sleepy little neighborhood was disturbed and hope things get back to normal. Condolences to the people who obviously cared about Trevor Cooper. Wish he could have received the help he needed.
They actually did send in a robot that he shot and threw back down the stairs, this is a townhome and he hid primarily in the attic. He also shot at their drones. Not only did they blow the garage door off and basically open up the entire back of the home they also sprayed water into it to try to get him out. It was pure madness for sure. Ultimately he was found deceased and here they stopped reporting details when it ended other than suspected OD. The homeowner he was roommates with had pets in the house and luckily all pets were retrieved safely or found safe when it ended . It displaces all 4 townhomes and apparently homeowners won’t cover the damage.
I wonder if he could have froze to death?
Thank you for the information. The only silver lining is that the only person who died was the one who caused the chaos.
How tf you getting a robot into a barricaded building? Really not sure you people even know what critical thinking is at this point….
Robots might be more adept than you think. From Julia’s comment:
“They actually did send in a robot that he shot and threw back down the stairs.”
He looked violent as hell choking and possibly killing that homeless guy in the video above. I wonder if he just went looking for a fight victim when he made that movie, looks planned like an attack. Just another violent punk.. imho
To bad it came.to this but sounds like he made a.series of bad decisions over years that came to this end
I feel bad for.his family and loved.ones but he did it to himself. Hopefully other people can learn.from his mistakes.
It’s the black rifle attitude more than it is the black rifle.
I’ve shot thousands of rounds and never videotaped it once.
Guess I’m not a tough guy?
Oh look he was one of those “Adopt, Don’t Shop!” Types.
Cuck-a-doodle-do! One of the fundamental rules of the internet is that those who mention cucks have small-dick energy. Jebs likes facts. Do you?
Is that a fact?
I was not aware that the Internet had rules.
LOL! Dick size? Really? Don’t stoop so low. You have a funny energy yourself
Sorry that this went down like this. Sounds like a long-running mental condition. I am fully supportive of gun rights but we do need to keep them away from people with mental problems. Thankfully this guy only put the violent end on himself and didn’t do a crazy mass shooting- before killing himself. I hope his dog is found healthy and loved…
We was such a a sweet boy.
What is funny here is the comments. Absolutely nobody knows what caused this. And why he did what he did. But everyone has a judgement because of his past problems . He had some bumps in the road like a lot of people do some are lucky enough to learn from them some aren’t. What I do know is he has a family that misses him. He had a family that no doubt tried to help him. He has friends that wish this would have went a different way.
I feel bad for the neighbors, first responders and his friends and family.
Learning from your mistakes is not a matter of luck. Everyone wishes this could have ended differently but one person was determined it would not end peacefully. .
Such a sad story. Trevor might have been a good guy who didn’t reach out, or didn’t receive, high level mental help. I didn’t know him, but I can say this: the North Coast is overflowing with guys, even very high functioning guys, who have personality disorders, brain chemistry imbalances, psychopathic traits, that they are trying to fight against. Men shouldn’t feel lesser than a man if they admit that some part of them is imperfect, or needs help. Unfortunately a dumb, or not-very-highly-trained therapist might not be qualified, or have life enough life experiences, to adequately tease out the issues of extremely high functioning people who suffer from mental issues, or illness. I hate to think that after watching One Flew Over The Cookoo’s Nest, mental hospitals should be brought back, or entire cities are repurposed as mental health and homeless services cities, but if they are, I hope the powers that be assign the highest possible licensure to assess the highest functioning individuals. Not saying Trevor was, but maybe so.
At least it sounds like he was good to his dog. Hope those who loved him aren’t reading this, but condolences to them if they are.
It’s far past time for some common sense ninja 🥷 control, We can’t have these dangerous weapons in public sneaking around doing flips n shit!
Seriously faq this POS. He deserved what he got. I’ve personally encountered this a-hole and he was nothing more than a punk and bully. He attacked me unprovoked at work one day and did it to others at public events (not anything to do with fighting).
I feel sorry for his dog, but that’s about it. Douche hope he enjoys what he earned.
“well it feels like we’re living in a police state”
cue the horns
Honestly why the fuck do you guys choose to use the videos and images of him with a gun?
There’s a ton of photos of him on his Instagram you could have used but literally every single media outlet shows this one video to scare everybody because he had a fucking gut in his hand. Absolutely pathetic from every front.
Anything and everything to promote fear in the media I swear to fucking God.
Y’all out here doing the most!
Uhm….you do know what lead to his death, right? It wasn’t puppies and martial arts. He was shooting up the joint…with a gun.
He supposedly didn’t die from gun fire though. So I agree with the comment from Big Rick
Eventually, they said, “On April 13, 2024, at about 8:45am, Henderson’s SWAT team made entry into the residence where the suspect discharged multiple rounds.” They left and no one was reported to be injured.
Like I said, the last day of his life, he chose to use a gun. No one is saying he shot himself, but what he will be remembered for, certainly in Nevada, is that he had a gun and wasn’t afraid to use it.
Seems like some pro-gun folks don’t like it when someone who obviously liked guns (big tacticool ones) wound up in a situation where he, like I said, was shooting up the joint. Do these folks think it makes them look bad, or it threatens their ownership of guns.
I say that as a gun owner (several…for hunting).
Nevada is an extremely military state. Go there on Nevada day at the end of October and watch the parade. Flamethrowers, grenade launchers, massive units with tactical vehicles, every military vehicle and device known to mankind. On full display paraded by to let the public know don’t screw around in Nevada we are battleborn. Nevadians love their weapons.
So you know what kinda gun he used? You know what kinda guns he had in his possession? Hmm kinda odd.
It does threaten gun ownership unfortunately. Since Biden has made it clear he wants gun owners to not have them. Cause the big bad AR 15 (armor light rifle) is so horrible and all you have to do is add on a bump stock and your pistol becomes some big high powered weapon. The man has no clue what he’s talking about. So yes it does make gun ownership a problem. Media needs to stop fear mongering not just with guns but with everything.
Because he shot at the officers.
I’m with you on this. I’m over the fear mongering when it comes to guns.
Unfortunately it’s how they keep the public living in fear and hate.
The top video reminds me of Bruce Lee and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the 1978 film, “Game of Death”, in which Lee wrote, produced, directed, and choreographed.
