New Music Video Drops on Humboldt

Brett McFarland, whose Facebook page states, “Played with Blues Legend Earl Thomas, John Craigie, & both Herlong and Sheridan Federal Prison Yards, uploaded the video above today about Humboldt. He recorded the music at Wrangletown in Arcata.

Lyrics:
Well, I built this home with my own two hands
With help from my friends and trees from the land.
Food and shelter the best I can.
This right here is where I make my stand.
‘Cuz we still got butchers and we still got mills.
Got a whole lot of folks, a whole lot of skills.
If you ever need help, ever need a favor,
Well, around here, you still call on your neighbor.

That’s how we do it in Humboldt. Hey, how we do it in Humboldt. How we do it in Humboldt

Oh we got trees like you hain’t never seen
Clear blue water straight out of a dream
And you don’t have to go and look too far
To find yourself a shooting star
You can be a weirdo, you can be a freak
You can be straight-laced seven days a week.
‘Cuz we got guts and a we got pride.
We got what matters on the inside.

That’s how we do it in Humboldt. Hey, how we do it in Humboldt. How we do it in Humboldt. That’s how we do it.

Well, the sun was setting on ’68.
It was the Summer of Love down in the Haight.
A war was dragging. It was getting late.
Back to the land sounded great>
And that’s when a redneck made love with a hippie.
They had themselves a child and they named her Gypsy.

That’s how we do it in Humboldt. Hey, how we do it in Humboldt. How we do it in Humboldt…

But, it ain’t all flowers and peace and love.
You know the history is stained in blood.
Everywhere from Hoopa down to Table Bluff,
Klamath to Bear River, man,
They had it rough.
It’s the same old story all across the land.
One of them things I just can’t understand.
So I do my best to show respect,
Tip my hat, and I won’t ever forget.

That’s how we do it in Humboldt. Hey, how we do it in Humboldt. How we do it in Humboldt…

Now, if you want to talk shit on California,
Go right ahead, but I got to warn you…
We hold it down around here…
If you live in this country and you ever smoke grass
You can thank Humboldt County for risking our ass.
Fighting CAMP since the 80s and going strong.
We just a kept on growin’ until the laws caught on…
The only way to say it is to put it bluntly
There ain’t another place more Outlaw Country….

That’s how we do it in Humboldt. Hey how we do it in Humboldt. How we do it in Humboldt. How we do it in Humboldt. How we do it in Humboldt….

And, yes, he did go to prison for growing marijuana.

Great vocals, but needs a real rhythm guitar and a better baseline…

Sounds like a rip off of, “A country boy can survive.”

I just listened to that country boy song and it is a direct rip off of “Cats in the Cradle with a Silver Spoon” 1974 folk rock song by Harry Chapinfrom the album Verities & Balderdash. The Humboldt Song didn’t sound like Cats in the Cradle much at all, it is has momentum for one things and makes me want to dance and love Cats in the Cradle which hasn’t much momentum and no dance vibes whatsoever. Side Note: how ironic that Hank Williams JR had to steal music (maybe be gave credit somewhere i hope) for his lyrics and is wearing enough rings to certainly be full of himself.

Humboldt is such a tacky brand.
Any of the neighboring counties offer a better authenticity

It’s to the point where all the Green Rushers love to say “Humboldt Humboldt Humboldt” so much out loud and claim it that now when somebody says “Humboldt!” I think of them as a Green Rush poser. LOL… It’s like when somebody claims themself as an “OG Hippie” then you know they aren’t…ha ha ha

Great song. I’ve never been a joiner (not by intent just how life made me) and i don’t smoke weed but this made me feel pride and i am sorry he served time for weed and glad he has good community. Adding a Wyiot word if not appropriation would be more than a tip of a hat and the Chinese who built the rails and many an impoverish white man worked died working hard to create what we have too so that and those now working to restore some damage to be proud of..but hey a song can only do so much and this one is a great one.
