Scown & Johnson Elected to GFPD Board, Brackett Receives Election Loss News in Jail

booking photo of Christopher Brackett, reddish light brown hair, mustache and goatee. On November 7, election night arrived in Humboldt County, but the patriotic event was missed by most residents. The main attraction of this election was confined to voters within the Garberville Fire Protection District (GFPD), who had the opportunity to cast their votes.
The singular issue on the ballot was the election of two board members to the GFPD’s Board of Directors. In rural areas like Garberville, it’s often a challenge to find individuals willing to fill these positions, making it a rare occurrence for voters to have multiple candidates to choose from. However, this time was different, as the GFPD voters had three candidates on the ballot to choose from.
Kent Scown and Babette Johnson emerged as the leading contenders, securing an equal share of the vote, with both receiving 45.14% of the votes, totaling 144 votes each. In contrast, the third candidate, Christopher Brackett, garnered only 31 votes, amounting to a modest 9.72% of the votes cast.
Interestingly, it’s worth noting that Christopher Brackett might have received the election results from a rather unique vantage point – he was seemingly incarcerated at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. Though the jail’s population log will not be published until later today, yesterday’s population log listed Brackett as an inmate, incarcerated since June 13, 2023 on a DUI charge.
John Chiv first reported on the candidate’s current incarceration on August 16. Regardless of his current housing, as a resident of the Garberville Fire Protection District without felony convictions, Brackett was eligible to run for the board seat. Chiv wrote, “Brackett does have a 2021 DUI case …with felony charges but it is still an open case with no conviction.”
Brackett’s legal situation and the outcome of his court case are no longer hang in the balance, as he did not secure victory in the election. While the election in the Garberville Fire Protection District presented a unique opportunity for him to run for a board seat, the results have removed the weight of public office from his options, allowing him to focus on his legal matters.

That’s a switch. Usually the candidate goes to the slammer during or after things are over. This guy beat the norm by going before!
GFPD= Got Fugged Pretty Drastically.

You spent so much time on Brackett you forgot to give more details about the GFPD Board, its only Scown and Johnson? How many Board members does the GFPD have and who are they?

Too bad for Chris. He’s a very talented plumber. (A knowledge the GFPD might benefit from). Good and funny, seemingly wise man too. I hope he can clean up this part of his life and be welcomed back into the fold. We need talented people like him around.

Maybe this will be a wake up call to ‘crack’ this plumber’s ways.

I do hope this is a wake-up call for Chris.
What I don’t understand is what seems to be your inference that Chris might be using “crack” or other type drugs. Do you know that? I haven’t seen him in a year+ so I don’t know. But if you don’t have a strong reason to suspect that, I invite you to withdraw that suggestion. This local man’s reputation is at stake

It wasn’t a reference to him doing any drugs, just a joke about plumber’s crack which I’m sure he does have.
Sorry if it didn’t come through that way. ?‍♂️

Thanks NoBody. I have found your comments over the years to be thoughtful. The clarification now makes sense. And, while my radar was not earlier attuned, I appreciate the humor.

Did he just crawl out from under a rock?
Wonder if the jail allowed him to have an election loss party.

Looking at the election results image, can someone explain the difference between “Unqualified write-ins” and “Unqualified write-ins?”

Yes, the difference was 4votes by mail.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist joke. But, never try to understand an election. However, I am very pleased with the results. Scown and Johnson have a lot of much needed experience.
