At approximately 12:10 p.m., two vehicles reportedly collided near the intersection of I and Henderson in Eureka.

According to a post on EPD’s Facebook page, “Eureka Police Department is conducting a fatal traffic collision investigation and currently has H, I, and J Streets closed at Russ. The road closures will remain in effect for a significant amount of time. We ask that drivers be patient in the area and use an alternate route.”

UPDATE 3:45 p.m.: A reader who preferred to remain anonymous told us she called 911 right after the crash. She gave us a description of the aftermath.

According to the witness, the driver involved in the accident admitted to running a red light by accident, resulting in the death of her passenger, a woman who was in her late sixties. The witness reported, “I only saw the car in the air so I missed the impact of the two vehicles…I saw [the driver, also a woman,] crawl out while I was on the phone with 911…[S]he had blood running from her head, but I know her biggest injury is killing her client…The driver admitted to running the red light and noticed when it was too late…Myself and another woman did our best to console her while waiting for EMT.”

The witness said that the driver was devastated upon learning of the passenger’s death and repeatedly exclaimed, “I killed her! I killed her!”

According to the witness, “Despite suffering an obvious head injury, the driver appeared physically fine otherwise, as did the driver of the truck they collided with.” She added, “The driver was so devastated at what she had done…[S]he was quick to [admit] fault…I hope she doesn’t read the comments.”

You know nothing about the cause of the accident. There have been times where people made comments like yours only to find out that the person who caused the accident, and died, did so because they had a medical emergency (specifically a heart attack in one case).

I hope you never have to experience such comments if it happens to someone you care about.

What are you even talking about? The cause of the accident, is the driver wasn’t paying attention and ran the red light. It says she admitted it. Accidents happen, but they can be prevented a lot of the times if people would just pay attention.

Wow! I pray to God that you are never in this sort of tragic situation. Until you have walked in this poor woman’s shoes, you have no idea how this might feel. I have no idea who was in this accident, but I will tell you that my heart hurts for all parties involved. You clearly have no compassion for others because if you did, you would have never made this ignorant comment. I feel so sorry for you, even more so for the poor woman that has to live with this guilt for the rest of her life because heaven forbid, she looked away for half a second. I guarantee that at one point or another, you have been a “Dumb F**k” the only difference is that you have been fortunate on timing. You know what else is good with timing, Karma- She is a bitch.

I’ve sent emails and phone call messages to the EPD and Chief of Police asking them to place radar units on H and I Streets, to control the speeding and prevent accidents and worse. Well, this terrible accident is a direct result of a police department completely ignoring an extremely dangerous situation and their sworn duty. When was the last time you saw a speeder pulled over on H or I Streets? Do your job EPD and slow Eureka down…

Don’t blame LE or anyone else. Two people responsible only, the two drivers….dosen’t matter if ,as mentioned above, medical emergency or not, all collisions are the result of two people not paying attention. “It wasn’t my fault” is bulkshit. You need to be paying attention to what other drivers are doing or not doing. Driving well is not hard, it does require total concentration and almost no one does that.

Lame response as far as it being both drivers fault. If I’m driving and obeying all laws and someone has a medical emergency and say runs a red light and hits me, well that’s not my fault and I’d be hard pressed to blame someone that has had a medical emergency. They usually aren’t the fault of the person having that emergency. Sometimes horrible accidents are just that, horrible accidents. ? May the family and friends find peace in their memories. I’m so very sorry.?

I say distracted driving should have the same consequences as DUI……at the very least reckless driving, a dash cam video should be enough proof to put points on the license of distracted drivers!

I’m a truck driver and can see down into cars, over 50% of people I observe driving are doing something besides paying attention, mostly cell phone use and the computer screen that is part of the car is second, deep conversion with the passenger is third, which is obvious by the use of hand gestures and head turned sideways while the car wanders all over the road, driving is secondary to most people, instead of primary!

I rode the bus down to San Francisco one and was able to look down into cars then. I agree that a lot of people are using a cell phone below what they think is the line of sight. Which of course means, if they hide their actions, they are quite aware they are doing something wrong.

But then again, checking on what other people in other cars are doing is being distracted too.

How about the person speeding not obeying the law. People are responsible for their choices. Can’t blame the police for other people’s decisions.

I agree that people are responsible for their choices, but we have an obvious epidemic of daily traffic accidents in Eureka. It must be stopped and only the EPD can accomplish that fact.

People speed because of psychology, and the over powered metal chariots we drive. You can be a nice person, and get behind the wheel and drive aggressively. Cars and trucks are overpowered. They sell based on horsepower numbers most don’t even understand, and don’t use. Most vehicles need only 10% of their power to maintain highway speeds. We put pressure on other drivers. How many of you have tooted the horn if you thought someone didn’t romp on it at a light? Maybe they were checking traffic, waiting for a pedestrian, or making a decision. The last time some tech nerd tried that with me, we just progressed one block together to the next red light, where I wanted to jump out and beat his ass even more!.. Despite being validated by the signals. Psychology.

You know what helps with that? Just saying to yourself that you have time. Time to do it right. Hardly anything in the world needs anyone’s immediate attention from being a driver other than driving.

Problem is: self centered bureaucratic scammers and privateers with contracts for public responsibilities fuck it all up. Red light cameras work, but are run as enrichment scams. Most are run through contracts that award a private company huge volumes of the revenue. They frequently get exposed as scams and tossed out of court when challenged. In SF, southbound 101 ran down 19th. The red light cameras all were set with yellow lights that switched too fast for the posted speed limit.
Germany’s Autobahn has speeding cameras. They warn you when they are close, and they flash when you are pushing it, or getting a ticket. (Most of the Autobahn is speed limited, the short sections that aren’t go by quick at 160KPH.)

They don’t have the manpower to do traffic enforcement. We need to reinforce recruitment for EPD and the best way to do that is raise compensation to compete with other jurisdictions.

When was the last time you saw a car pulled over for speeding on H or I Streets? I haven’t seen one and drivers on those streets often pass me driving in excess of 50+ MPH. I have contacted the EPD and their Chief of Police about this dangerous and deadly situation many times. I requested the EPD place radar units on H and I Streets to slow the traffic down to prevent injury or death. This is a reliable and proven tactic. I never received a reply. Now we see the results of a complacent police department that can’t even control basic speed laws with proven tactics. It’s time for a change of leadership at the EPD. We demand a police department that will aggressively slow Eureka drivers down NOW, to prevent most of the accidents and injuries we see daily. The status quo is unacceptable.

Agree 100%. Monday as I drove up to Buhne on H st, I was passed by 4 vehicles, the RADAR indicated 58MPH, two of them were service trucks. I noticed that there were also kids arriving at a corner to cross H as I passed. Kids.

There has also been a LEO vehicle parked on the left side of H near there, I guess as a deterrent.

I am going to have to learn to stop reading the comments you all are the most judgemental individuals I have ever seen. You have the answers to everything. The driver made a mistake that cost a clients life. They are already dealing with that weight. The family has lost a loved one so instead of offering prayers to all evolved you chose to put your 2 cents in. We have got to do better. May God comfort and keep the people that are evolved.

‘Henderson and I’ was legendary for accidents. They were most often caused by a driver running a red light on Henderson. Henderson, nice long run with no stop signs.

IMHO: Eureka should make a 4 way stop at Henderson and J… or maybe ‘Ost’. Might cut down on the number of accidents when they hit the stoplight.

So freakin’ sad…all the years I lived in Eureka I NEVER saw a cop pull anyone over, ever. The EPD doesn’t police traffic. Not sure what they do all day but it isn’t slowing the raging speeders. Driving up there is like being in a pin ball machine! EPD, do your job!

Must be a nice rock you live under. EPD is swamped and critically undermanned while Eureka CC is paying for trails. The blame lays downtown, and with all the speeding drivers, not at EPD.

My mother got into an accident at that intersection back in 1970. I was about 4 years old at the time and was in the car. It was the same exact scenario, distracted driver running a red light on I street. My mother was driving her relatively new Plymouth Valiant. My father, who was a car racing buff, added after market seatbelts to that car which did not come with them and also fabricated and installed a roll bar. The woman who ran the red light and hit us may well have been drunk, but this was before DUI was enforced. I remember the day well because it was so traumatic even though remarkably no one was injured. My little brother was also in the car in the front seat. I am not sure things would have come out so well if my father had not put the seatbelts in that car. I have seen my mother pissed off a few times over the years, but let me tell you I saw a fiery in her eyes that day I have not seem before or since. I remember my mother yelling at the woman telling her that she almost killed her kids which in fact was true. I think my mother’s reaction was more fear driven than anything else. I remember the woman who ran the light was sobbing and sobbing saying that she had just left her husband who was cheating on her or something like that. To this day when I am the lead car on Henderson at that stop light, I pause to check that all the cars are actually stopping on I street. Sometimes this pisses people off behind me, but hey, my hair is gray now so I just write it off to an older gentleman’s driving habits. I would though ask that all who drive this intersection be patient with the cautious drivers like myself. There have been numerous occasions over the years where I have witnessed people running the red on I street at that intersection and been glad for my caution.

Not noticing you’re about to run a red light is not paying attention to the road in front of you. T-boning a car that’s in the middle of an Intersection is also not paying attention to the road in front of you. How would you not see a car that’s almost in front of you about to cross your path? Did she punch it through a straight red or barely miss the yellow? Did he jump the green? There’s really no use speculating the ifs, ands or buts. The burden of fault falls on the driver who ran the light however it was the driver of the 2nd vehicle that actually killed the passenger. Both will live with the guilt but the first has suffered far greater consequences. Keep your eyes on the road!
