Spot the Signs of Breast Cancer

Press release from SoHum Health:

sohum health breast cancer awareness infographicOctober is breast cancer awareness month and a call to action to get screened.  Do you remember when you last had your mammogram?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in California and it is the second leading cause of death from cancer in Californian women. (1)   About 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in the United States.  Chances are, you know someone who’s dealt with it.

What can be done? Increasing breast cancer screening rates is key to reducing breast cancer deaths. Nationally, 76% of females aged 50 to 74 years received a breast cancer screening in 2021 (2). California, however, is below the national average. According to California Health Center Program Uniform Data System (UDS), breast cancer screening rate for Californian women in the same age group is only at 52%.

But there is some good news regarding breast cancer!  If caught early (before the cancer has spread), the 5 year survivability is 99%! And women who receive regular screenings have a 26% lower cancer death rate compared to those who do not receive screenings. (3) Best of all, breast cancer death rates have slowly decreased since 1989, for an overall decline of 43% through 2020! (3)  Today we have better screening, awareness, and treatment than we did 35 years ago.  Californian women are up to the challenge.  And this writer is challenging you to get your regular screening, it’s working.

There is no part of Breast Cancer treatment that is not horrible.

Get a Mammogram and don’t wait until you are 40! Start young…

Yearly screenings are absolutely necessary, so don’t skip.

Genetic testing for BRCA has been available for years…

Digital and MRI testing is available in Ukiah, but even Garberville’s SoHum Health offers some services.

Don’t wait, make an appointment and do it yearly.

It sure would be nice if all the women followed your advice, but I am sure there a lot that won’t. Rolling the dice with cancer is just jackass crazy!

Great it was also published in Spanish. A sometimes under served portion of our population.
Also,  Men can get breast cancer too. About 1 out of every 100 breast cancers diagnosed in the United States is found in a man.

There are no symptoms except possibly “lumps” until the cancer is almost too far gone to be treatable. Do your self-exams and get your mammograms.
