Fast-Moving Train Tosses Tractor Stuck on Tracks
Highway 273 is closed at Breslauer Way near Redding after a train struck a tractor trailer stuck on the tracks. The October 4th incident was caught on video by Matt Mello and reshared to Facebook where it has been reshared over 600 times as of this publication.
The video shows a semi-truck pulling a low-boy trailer loaded with a large CAT loader, stopped on the tracks. Moments after the video begins, a train strikes the commercial vehicle and trailer, tossing the loader like a play-toy, creating a cloud of dust and debris.
KRCR in Redding states, “Diesel fuel is leaking and the road is expected to be closed for two hours,” in an article posted just over an hour ago.
The ABC affiliate also states that the tractor-trailer was stuck after the low-boy became high-centered on the tracks.
In addition to the closure of US 273, the Caltrans QuickMap indicates that Eastside Road is closed at Radio Lane.
It is unknown at this time if anyone was injured in the collision.

Why was he taking a low-boy across a built up roadway that would obviously high center the trailer? Is he an ex Swift driver? That’s going to be a heck of an insurance claim. ?♂️
Complete lack of brains and no common sense. Just lucky that accident (stupid mistake) did not kill him.
There’s no signage on that crossing for semis. Insurance is going to see that and sue the city.
My long truck rides smooth!
Today we do a big job
Ooh look! RAIL CROSSING
Pedal to the metal, we will just jump this sucker!
That’s the DRIVER walking away, knowing the shit is about to hit the fan. Throws something down pissed as he’s walking away from the truck, turns around and BOOM! Watch him. Nummah.
Thats not going to buff out…
Would it have damaged anything further if engineer stopped the train so it’s not blocking the roadway?
They need to stop ASAP and remain where they stopped for the purpose of the investigation. Tells them how fast it was traveling at impact and when they started braking.
In addition, they need to check that the train was not damaged.
To stop a fully loaded train going at, say 40 mph+ would take 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile or more depending on how many cars were in the train. My Dad worked for the railroad for 40 years. Saw a lot of this stuff happen. Truck driver should have never went that route. Hopefully no one was hurt. Union Pacific is not at fault here. The truck driver and company he drives for is.
I agree with your comment 100%!
The Cat loader looks fubar I’m surprised there was no fire. Happy there were no (apparent) injuries.
Did the engineer have a dash cam?
What dangerous chemicals were in the tankers? This could have been a NASTY wreck.
This is a notice to the city of Eureka WTF going on with H And I st. I sat and counted in a 5 hour time span 6 bikes north and 4 bikes south on H and I st for a bike lane, tell me does that make sense to shut down a perfect flo of traffic of 3 lanes H and I ,sorry that some dumb as person in our city planning department think this is a awesome idea to make a bike lane and congest traffic down to 2 lanes,Come on Eureka Puff Puff Pass, ok so let’s put speed humps every 3 blocks from Henderson to 4 st and maybe 3 or 4 round abouts, Eureka Planing department you guys SUCKS I’ve lived in this town for 60 years all been good til some dumb ass dilwad thinking they need to waste our Tax money on these repulsive changes, what about the pot hole ridden streets in Eureka that in desperate repaving, please tell me how can you justify this waste of city tax paying dollars of the people of the Eureka ca ,to do these projects and leave the people of Eureka in a sad reality of shitty streets. So do your special projects and but remember every time you hit a car damaging ?? pot hole. If you don’t believe me take time and spend a couple of hours driving the streets of Eureka. Then make a rebuttal on my comment. It’s obvious that the now day yeppie have no clue on how to organize a city.
You should probably write the city rather than rant on a news feed that has nothing to do with the city of Eureka. Just saying not sure who you think is going to rebuttal your comment ?
Does no good. That’s part of the reason my family moved to Yuba City and then out of state…
Logically one would make the main bike routes trough town a different route than the main car routes through town. Ideally the main bike route would be on less congested scenic streets…
Great idea!
More people would ride if it weren’t incredibly dangerous to do so. We should be encouraging bike riding. It’s global warming crunch time. The earth is about to scratch us all off like the bad tick we are.
Nice try, Walter White..
First time driving through there, I drug my trailer landing gear on the tracks. There’s no low ground clearance or trucks signage there. Hope everyone’s ok.
Earlier commenter put the blame on the truck driver. Either the City/County, or the railroad should make these crossings usable for all legal vehicles, or provide strong signage or make them gated. Victim blaming in defense of the big corporation or gov’t.
To all the highway heroes on here that are making fun of this, SHAME ON YOU!!!! I’m a retired truck driver and y’all KNOW that this could happen to any one of us! And we’re not all perfect like we tend to think we are just because it hasn’t happened to us, yet!
I know that young man personally and we are BEYOND GRATEFUL that he was able to walk away from this. He was working to provide for his family, something that a lot of folks his age have forgotten what to do in this day and age and we will always be proud of him and support him through the good and the bad ♡
We love ya I.S.
Signed,
Lil Brat from the Evergreen state
We’re all grateful no one was killed. But every driver is responsible for knowing his or her route. Same with low bridges, weight limits, and wide loads/turning radius…
